April was not kind to the automotive industry, as many of the major players experienced sales declines.
Ford, GM, Toyota, and Nissan all recorded lower sales compared to the same month a year ago, while automobile sales in general took a hit for the 4th consecutive month (the longest such streak since the major issues with the industry back in 2009).
Kia Motors also took a hit, seeing sales drop 5% over last year, but sister company Hyundai saw some success with a rather modest 1% increase in sales.
It may be a small gain, but anything positive is good given the current state of the automotive industry.
Let’s dig a little deeper into Hyundai’s April sales figures.
Demand for the Elantra, Sonata, and Santa Fe stayed high, helping Hyundai achieve sales of 63,050 units in the month of April.
The Elantra delivered the best result, moving 16,346 units in April, closely followed by the Sonata midsize sedan with 16,294 units sold.
We can expect to see sales of the Sonata begin to spike again soon, as the refreshed model should be hitting the U.S. showrooms in the next couple of weeks.
It was also a solid month for crossover and SUV models in the Hyundai line-up.
The Santa Fe saw a 33% sales increase, moving 9,480 units, while the more compact Tucson had 9,952 units go out the showroom door, the best ever month for this model.
