Hyundai Taxis Of The World
It’s unlikely that many people are aware of the preferred make and models for taxis around the world, but unsurprisingly Hyundai is particularly popular with taxi services in South East Asia.
The Sonata is the most prominent, with all four countries included in this article choosing to use its various models for the purpose of taxiing, including its employment as an executive taxi.
China: Hyundai Sonata and Elantra
Commonly used in Beijing, the Hyundai Sonata and Elantra are specific to this part of China.
The popularity of Hyundai taxis in Beijing is presumably a direct result of the Hyundai plant that opened there in 2002.
This popularity has not spread across the rest of China however, with most cities preferring the Volkswagen Jetta.
In Shanghai, the Volkswagen trend continues, where the VW Santana is the most popular taxi.
Indonesia: Hyundai Excel, Starex and Sonata
Jakarta, the capital of Indonesia, is home to a variety of different taxis. One of these is the Hyundai Excel which is a fairly new addition to the city’s taxi fleets.
The latest model of the Hyundai Sonata is used as an executive taxi car to transport important figures to various events.
These are chauffer driven, with the driver wearing smart clothing and offering a fully confidential service.
One executive taxi cab operator has also added the Hyundai Starex to its fleet for groups of passengers requiring extra space.
South Korea: Hyundai Pony, Presto, Stellar and Sonata
As you can expect, South Korea is home to a whole host of Hyundai taxis, with Hyundai proving to be the most popular manufacturer for the country’s taxi fleets.
The Pony, Presto and Stellar are all commonly used by taxi services all over South Korea, particularly in large cities like Seoul and Busan. More recently, Hyundai Sonatas are becoming more widely used as taxis, along with the Korean-made Kia Lotze.
Singapore: Hyundai Sonata
Another country that more recently added the Hyundai Sonata to its taxi fleets is Singapore.
Between the 1960s and 70s, the Mercedes Benz 220S was the preferred taxi of choice, but this was replaced with various models from Toyota, Nissan and Chevrolet.
The use of the Hyundai Sonata is not yet widespread, but it remains one of the country’s imported vehicles used for taxiing, along with the European-built Toyota Corolla.
