Hyundai recalls – things you need to know!
It doesn’t matter how much effort an automaker puts into creating quality vehicles with high safety standards, every one of them are going to experience recalls.
As you have seen with previous Hyundai recalls, these are generally very specific issues that affect a certain number of cars made during a specific period of time.
Rarely are these issues so bad that they affect the safety of the people in the car, but it’s still a good idea to have recalls taken care of as quickly as possible.
What we hope to do here is to keep you up to date with the latest recalls of Hyundai vehicles as they happen.
List of Hyundai recalls (sorted by date)
- Hyundai Sonata brake lights issue (November 20., 2015)

Hyundai car recalls explained
When the automaker, or sometimes the NHTSA, deems that a model has a defect that will affect the safety of the vehicle, a car recall is issued.
This happens when the defect does not meet federal safety standards, but the good news is that the automaker will repair the issue at no cost to the owner.
All you need to do when you get a Hyundai recall notification is take your vehicle to the nearest Hyundai dealer.
Will I be notified if a Hyundai recall affects my vehicle?
By law, automakers must send a letter to all of the owners affected by the car recall. A visit to the NHTSA website will also allow you to keep up to date on all Hyundai recalls.
What information is included in the recall letter?
The following items will be included in your Hyundai safety recall letter:
- A detailed description of the defect
- Potential risks and problems that may occur if the defect is not repaired
- Potential warning signs to watch out for
- What steps the manufacturer will take to correct the problem. This includes making you aware of when the repair will be available, and how long it will take
- Instructions on how to proceed
What do I do after the recall letter arrives?
As mentioned above, the letter should include detailed instructions for you to follow, which usually begins by making a call to your local Hyundai dealer.
Most dealers will run service campaigns once a safety recall has been issued, and they can set you up with an appointment. It is worth noting that tire recalls have to be completed within 60 days of notification.
What if no recall letter arrives?
Manufacturers do all they can to get I touch with customers when a car recall comes about. If you believe that a Hyundai safety recall may affect your car, but have not received a letter, we suggest that you check the aforementioned NHTSA website for details.
The repair will still be completed free of charge even if the letter did not arrive. The beauty of the website is that it will very often post the vehicle recalls before the letters are issued.
Am I in danger if my vehicle is subject to a safety recall?
No, there is no immediate risk to your safety if your car is on the Hyundai recall list. That said, you should still have the issue repaired as quickly as possible, as failing to do so could increase that risk.
Will I have any out of pocket expenses for the repair?
No!! Every vehicle that makes its way onto the NHTSA recall list should be repaired for free by the manufacturer. You should take the car to the service center of your closest Hyundai dealership, and they will fix it ASAP.
It also helps if you bring along the recall letter, assuming of course that you received one.
If the dealer does try to present you with a bill for a Hyundai recall repair, ask to speak to the service manager. If you still get no joy, contact the manufacturer directly.
If you are still being stuck with the bill, call the NHTSA at 1-888-327-4236. This is a government agency that can make things happen very quickly.
