Second generation 1,6L CRDI diesel engine for the i20

Hyundai is proud to announce that engineers at the R&D centre in Namyang, S. Korea, have completed the development of the second generation 1,6L four-cylinder diesel engine, which utilizes all of the modern hi-tech to deliver class leading performance and fuel consumption.

Displacing 1,582cc, the U2 diesel engine develops a maximum output of 128hp (94kW) at 4000 rpm. The best in class torque is rated 260Nm @ 1900-2750 rpm, while more than 90 percent of maximum torque is achieved at 1500rpm. Average fuel consumption is a very modest 4,7L/100km, a figure that corresponds to CO2 emissions of only 125g CO2/km.

The U2 is also fully compliant with the latest Euro4 emission standards. And it can also be optionally equipped with particulate filter that reduces particulate matter to the forthcoming Euro 5 emission standards, which take effect in 2009.

The U2 diesel engine is also claimed to be the quietest engine among diesel engines of the same displacement. Measurements have proved that the levels of noise are up to two dBA lower compared to diesel engines from other automakers.

A newly developed four-cylinder diesel engine will be first installed into the all-new Hyundai i20, due to be launched at the upcoming Paris Auto Show in October. Later, it will expand the successful i30 model range, while it will also find its way to some Kia models, such as Forte compact sedan and Soul crossover.

“Our diesel engine development capabilities are truly world–class and the proof can be seen in the U2. It’s the leader of the class and it makes us proud,” said Dr. Hyun–Soon Lee, president of the Hyundai–Kia Corporate R&D Division.

The first car to have the U2 engine installed will be the successor model of the Getz, the all–new i20 sub–compact. The i20, due to be launched in Europe towards the end of 2008, will be produced at Hyundai Motor Co.´s Indian subsidiary in Chennai.

By combining their advanced engineering know–how with state–of–the–art technologies such as a variable geometry turbocharger, a variable swirl control system and an electronically controlled exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) cooling system, the U2 development team was able to successfully optimize the ports and combustion chambers. This endows the U2 with outstanding fuel economy (4.7 L/100km) and low emissions (125g CO2 /km).

At the heart of the power plant is a new 1600 bar CRDi system which is capable of delivering up to five injections per cycle permitting much more precise control than was possible with the previous 1350 bar system. As a result, the U2 generates a total power output that measures an impressive 128PS(94kW)@4000rpm. Torque is rated 26.5kg.m(260Nm)@1900~2750rpm––best in its class, and more than 90 percent of the maximum torque is achieved at 1500rpm.

Other refinements include a variable swirl control system which helps to minimize emissions and a chain drive for improved reliability in valve train control and a bed plate–type lower crankcase for better block rigidity, lower noise, vibration and harshness. The auxiliary belt is a serpentine–type for improved reliability and compact packaging.

The U2 claims to be the quietest engine in its class, measuring up to two dBA lower than leading competitors. During the course of development, the main sources of noise emission were identified and appropriate measures were implemented. Since the 1.6 liter engine was equipped with chain drive for valve timing control, the chain and cover systems were identified as one of the main sources of noise.

Structural analysis was performed for design improvement and based on modal analysis the chain and head cover structure was reinforced by applying ribs. The shape and structure of the oil pan was also improved as the oil pan was another big source of noise emissions. Structural analysis was also done to investigate the effects of rib shape and rib location on noise characteristics and thus, developers were able to arrive at an optimally shaped oil pan.

    Nothing special. Fiat has 1.6, only 120ps but 300Nm of torque – 5 less than hyundai’s 2.0 CRDi engine. I hope this engine will be mated to a 6-speed transmission instead of 5-speed.

    Not that I wouldn’t agree with you Rob, but I checked the 1,6 diesel engine and found out that it has 8hp less than Hyundai’s U2 engine, and also consumes 0,2L more fuel per 100km compared to U2.
    Fiat’s diesel does generate more torque, so the statement in the official press release, which says that U2 has the best in class torque, is not correct.

    Not sure about the transmission in the i20, but an eco version, called i-Blue will have a six speed manual transmission. With the all-new 1,4 diesel engine that generates 90 hp, the i20 i-Blue will consume only about 4l per 100km or about 59MPG!!

    This is true but the performances of Fiat Bravo 1.6 Multijet 16v 120hp are near as good as i30′s with 2.0 CRDi engine. I’ve driven both, i30 1.6 CRDi-HP and Fiat Bravo 1.6 multijet. Although I’m a “Hyundai fan” I have to say that I liked Bravo’s engine more. But only the engine and the Blue & Me system ;)

    How can I check if the engine in my i30 (2010 make) is U2 ? The car was purchased in Poland, a few weeks ago. I ordered a 1.6, CRDi 115 PS engine and when I went to Hyundai service, because of the disturbing rattle-like sound form the engine when accelerating they told me that this is a U2 engine and this is normal – it should go away after 2000 – 3000 km.
