Hyundai taking pre-orders for its all-new 2011 Avante compact car in Korea…
Hyundai today revealed it has been accepting pre-sale orders for its all-new Avante compact car since June 21st. To date, the automaker has received more than 5.000 orders for its upcoming compact car. This is above initial expectations, according to a Hyundai spokesperson.
Hyundai unveiled the 2011 Avante compact car for the first time at the 2010 Busan International Motor Show. The all-new Hyundai Avante embodies Hyundai’s latest styling DNA and features segment-leading safety, fuel-efficiency and performance. Steve Yang, President and CEO of Hyundai’s Global Business Division is confident that Hyundai has succeeded to redefine the compact segment.
“With sportier and even more elegant lines than its predecessor, the new Hyundai Avante continues Hyundai’s “fluidic sculpture” design philosophy. Our new car encompasses the automaker’s latest ambitions, featuring the best styling and performance in its segment” said Steve.
As Hyundai revealed during the official unveiling, the 2011 Avante will be available with 1.6L Gamma Gasoline Direct Injection engine, mated to a 6-speed automatic gearbox. For the first time, Hyundai’s compact car will feature a GDI technology and six-speed automatic transmission.
The new Avante delivers a peak output of 140 horsepower and maximum torque of 17.0 kg/m. According to Hyundai, the model is also about 10 percent more fuel efficient than its main rivals, including Honda Civic and Ford Focus.
When on sale, the new Hyundai Avante will be available with a raft of advanced features not found on other compact cars. Those features include High Intensity Discharge -HID headlamps, LED combination lamps in the rear, puddle lamps, heated rear seats and other.
The 2011 Hyundai Avante is set to hit the Korean showroom floor by the end of August, while US sales are expected to commence sometime in the first quarter of 2011.

Hyundai is about tear-up the conventional wisdom for the compact car segment that says, compact cars need to be frumpy and skanky to elegant and sophisticated.
Nissan, Honda and Toyota, you have a lot to fear.

I really hope this comes with a proper transmission (6MT) in the US.

More so then anything Hyundai needs to be truly genuinely serious as follows:
1. Have better sorted suspension that is more compliant (in Australia the i45 or Sonata is deemed to have poor suspension setup)
2. Steering is devoid of feel and is poor (in Australia the i45 or Sonata is deemed to have poor suspension setup)
3. Seat squabs to base need to have better firmer taller foam to cradle person as is the norm with Korean cars the seat sqaub is flat as with small side bolsters

Robert,
I agree about the steering. I have a uk model i20 and the steering feels the less successful aspects of the car.
The suspension is firm and feels taut, which keeps it flat through turns and is miles better from my point of view than, for example, a honda jazz. But it’s unsettled over bumpy roads and the back end sometimes jumps disconcertingly if thrown off its line by a pothole mid-bend. (on the plus side, lift off oversteer aplenty, if that’s your bag
If the sonata is similar I can imagine it’s a bit trying on a spot of aussie outback.
