Hyundai Veloster MPG; topping Honda CR-Z hybrid fuel economy
Hyundai Veloster Coupe expected to achieve 40 PPG and top Honda CRZ fuel economy…
The up-coming Hyundai Veloster Coupe, which is scheduled to make its official premiere at the 2010 Paris Auto Show in October (officially starts on October 2nd) will not only be fast, but also extremely fuel efficient (for a sports car).
According to John Krafcik, the all-new entry-level Hyundai coupe will hit 40 MPG fuel economy and will beat its main rival, the Honda CR-Z hybrid car, which can achieve “only” 36 mpg in the city and 39 mpg on highway.
The as-yet-unnamed Hyundai coupe will achieve above mentioned fuel economy figures without a hybrid set-up, which is a remarkable achievement for Hyundai brand and once again proves that the South Korean carmaker has become the company that’s setting up latest vehicle’s fuel economy standards.
Reportedly, the forth-coming Hyundai Coupe will feature a 1.6L four-cylinder GDI engine with estimated power-output of 140+ horsepower. The fuel-sipping four-cyl. engine will be mated to either a six-speed manual or six-speed automatic transmission – rumored to be a dual clutch gearbox similar to VW’s DSG gearbox.
In addition to being more fuel efficient, the Veloster two-door coupe will also be more fun to drive than Honda’s reborn CRX, the CR-Z coupe. The model will feature a suspension set-up tuned to provide firm and sporty ride. And according to John Krafcik, the president and CEO of Hyundai Motor America, the upcoming two-door coupe will also be more spacious that the CR-Z coupe. It will offer seating for four-people instead of only two like the CR-Z.
Another detail that Krafcik let slip is that all models will have a large in-dash screen, presumably to manage connectivity features in addition to more traditional vehicle functions. It’s still to early to speculate on the vehicle’s pricing, but according to Krafcik, the 2012 Hyundai (Veloster) coupe will be an affordable entry-level coupe with prices set low enough to attract younger folks and first-time car buyers.

There’s a chance the Veloster will be called either the ‘Pulse’ or ‘Synergy’ when it’s released. You heard it here first..

Don’t like these two names (Pulse and Synergy). I prefer the vehicle to be called Hyundai Tiburon or Veloster, sound “sportier”…

there was a poll a while back at hyundaithinktank , people where asked to submit a list of names to name the veloster, the list broke down to 10 names after, and then people voted on those names, the 2 most voted names where pulse and Raptor.
I think the Name Raptor was the most voted name, Raptor sounds aggressive, I like that name. Hyundai Raptor. (veloster Raptor)
Raptor Attack! imagine a hyundai raptor meet… Raptors running in a pack, sounds cool.

Do I wait for the Veloster turbo and pocket the extra 8k or do I get the 2.0T Sonata Limited…both look to be great cars. Need to see the Veloster unmasked, hopefully won’t have to wait for the Detroit auto show.

I still think the Veloster is a great name!

I like the name “Pulse”. Tib isn’t right for this car…hold off on using the Tiburon name and maybe try to release a separate FWD or AWD coupe under the Tib namesake. Considering that this is something of a new segment..not really a hatch(Golf), not really a coupe(Gen Coupe), and somewhere in between..I’m thinking that something like Pulse or Synergy would work well. Raptor is just too kiddish and Veloster somewhat works…except that velocity entitles a fast car and roadster points towards a droptop. Not that this car will be slow, but I doubt a FWD car pushing 140-200HP will really be affiliated with speed in most people’s minds.
So I’m voting for something like Pulse or Synergy, and MAYBE they can market some sort of Cooper-like drop top and market that as the “Veloster” edition of this product ala’ Sypder edition drop tops.

Oh wow…well there you have it “Veloster Raptor” fans. Call this thing the Raptor, market a drop top version as “Veloster” ala’ “Eclipse Spyder”…and you literally will get a car referred to as the Veloster Raptor =)

FYI “Pulse” was registered by Hyundai USA as an automotive trademark in Jan 2010. This tell me that ‘Pulse’ will most likely be the final name..

So Kia Soul and Hyundai Pulse? That sounds reasonable to me.
June 27th, 2010 at 3:15 am
I think the Pulse would fit this car better the more i think about it!

Yes the Pulse is to Hyundai what Soul was to Kia (halo car).

I think Veloster sounded pretty cool. We have the raptor fighter and the Toronto Raptors basketball team.
Pulse okay but a bit tame.
Synergy sounds like a tennis racquet to me.
I like Veloster. Sounds aggressive and distinct.
