Hyundai Veloster Coupe spy shots
It’s finally coming to shape, the all-new Hyundai Veloster coupe. Ever since this stylish, small sports car concept was revealed in 2007, motorists and car aficionados have been waiting for it to appear in the streets.
The Veloster is scheduled to be launched sometime in 2011 and these latest spy shots prove that not much have been changed from the Seoul Motor Show 2007 concept car.
Although the 2012 Hyundai Veloster was heavily camouflaged, spy photos clearly reveal the coupe’s Saab-style wraparound windscreen, sloping roofline and short front and rear overhangs.
As expected from Hyundai, this modern entry-level coupe will blend power with attractive styling and impressive fuel economy. Sources close to Hyundai report that the 2012 Veloster will have quite dramatic styling – even more so than the concept car.
John Krafcik, President and CEO of Hyundai Motor America, promised a body design that is so new it will wow car lovers. He said, “It might be doors or a unique roof or something with the hatch. But it won’t be like anything out there before in the small car segment.”
The chunky, funky, three-door Veloster (or whatever its final name will be) will be released with a two-plus-two layout. Its small and fun exterior will pack a powerful engine, which guarantees “a great power to weight ratio,” according to Krafcik.
The 2012 Veloster will be powered by a range of four-cylinder engines mated to six-speed manual or automatic trannys. The CEO revealed that this front-wheel-drive Hyundai will pack an entry-level 1.6L four-cylinder engine with Direct Injection technology making around 140 hp. And it’ll get over 40 mpg US (5.8lt/100km or 48mpg UK).
Other reports also suggest that the 2012 Hyundai Veloster coupe will feature a turbocharged version of the normally-aspirated 1.6L engine, producing 175 horsepower. Such engine first appeared last year in Hyundai’s ix-onic concept vehicle.
Some ongoing rumors also claim that Veloster, destined for European market, may feature a 184-hp 2.0L diesel engine from just recently launched Hyundai ix35/Tucson as it directly competes against Volkswagen’s Scirocco, which also has a 2.0L TDI available.
Built to replace the Tiburon, Krafcik revealed that this compact car is the size of the sub-compact Accent. He said, “Think of it like a 4-passenger Honda CRX. It’ll be a little car you can take out and ring its neck and still get good mileage. There’s just nothing out there right now with that kind of Eco-sport positioning”
Sales of the 2012 Hyundai Veloster coupe are expected to commence in the summer of 2011 with prices starting at around $16,000. [Source: Autoexpress.co.uk]

HYUNDAI USED TO BE KNOWN AS A FOLLOWER IN THE THE DESIGN ARENA, BUT I THINK THERE BECOMING A LEADER IN THAT AREA, TOO BAD OTHER CAR COMPANIES DONT MAKE NICHE PRODUCTS LIKE THIS!!

Give the Gen Coupe a 2.4 Turbo GDI instead of the 2.0.

the 2.4 theta II is a stroked 2.0 so if they want more power than the 2.0 T of the Sonata turbo they need to review the engine block to make it more strongger!

Yeah i have heard they are bumping up the Gen Coupe which is a great move to make that car a killer sale against the competion plus making the velostar a better sale option with the 2.0

So the thing with the passenger door being smaller, is in fact a 3rd door to ease rear-seat entry (so it says on other websites)? If true, this totally ruins it for me. I was really going to consider this as my next car… I’m looking for a real 3-door hatch, and it seems just impossible to have in NA. Focus, Fiesta, Mazda2 are all 5-doors. How hard is it to provide us with a cheap, fun, 3-door??? My only hope now is the Golf (too pricey) or the new Swift (smallish) when, and if we get it in Canada. Too bad, this thing looks great… on the driver side.

Proportions look good, but from whats not covered up, it looks too conventional. It also looks like they’re not going with the concept double hexagon grill which is the part I liked the most. However, it is absolutely driving me nuts due to the fact that the whole rear half is covered up! Its really making me anticipate. Seeing the latest launch of the Sonata Hybrid, and how Hyundai is STILL making each car they release more fantastic than the previous releases, I can’t wait to see some real uncovered spy shots of this one.

Wrong, as a car enthusiast that likes Hyundai’s recent growing and image but not a die hard fan, I can say that he has a problem with that affirmation, the Honda CR-Z is the CRX of the this day, and let’s be honest, an 184hp diesel can’t match a 200hp CR-Z Type-R that will also arrive in 2012. It will be nice to see a clash between the CR-Z, Veloster and MR2(Prius hybrid)

I think a 140 hp Veloster with direct injection is more likely to be the true successor the CR-X because since Hyundai wisely chose not to make it a hybrid–it will be much cheaper, lighter, less complex, and faster than the base CR-Z which will likely start in the $25,000 range. Basically, Honda made a major mistake in saddling the CR-Z with its poor performing hybrid system which does not deliver frugality or speed. As for a CR-Z type R version that has not been announced at all by Honda, whereas Hyundai has stated that it will have a turbo charged engine option for the Veloster. Furthermore, even if Honda does make 200 hp hybrid CR-Z it will likely be very expensive and given that it will be even heavier than the base CR-Z, I expect the turbo veloster to be as fast if not faster than the Cr-Z and it should be much cheaper.

The CR-Z is pure crap…the fuel efficiency of a current gen Cobalt, the power of an Aveo, the weight of a clunky sedan, and the price of a Mustang. That thing is a total failure and just a cheap attempt from Honda to cash in on people who “want to save the environment” as opposed to buying a car based on specs. The CR-Z is fugly too, basically a coupe version of the failed Insight with the addition of dog ears and an overbite.
The “Veloster” is by far and wide going to be the superior vehicle. It’s funny, but these spy shots look amazingly like the Scirocco’s dimensions and shape while it was wearing heavy-clad spyshot armour. I think we’re going to see a smaller, lighter, super efficient, more coupe-like Scirocco out of this and that’s 100% absolutely fine by me.
