Hyundai iFlow concept car to heading to Geneva Auto Show
Hyundai iFlow concept car set to make its official debut at the 2010 Geneva Auto Show.
Hyundai has released the very first teaser image of its iFlow concept car, which is set to make its official public premiere during the opening day of the 2010 Geneva Auto Show.
Designed at Hyundai’s European design headquarters in Russelsheim, Germany, the iFlow the concept car features visionary exterior styling and hints at a possible design direction for a future-generation mid-size Hyundai sedan.
There are no other details about Hyundai iFlow available at this point, but our sources say that the concept car sits on Hyundai’s in-house developed hybrid-drive architecture and features a set of solar panels on its roof.
The iFlow concept is also said to give us a glimpse of the new i40 sedan, which is scheduled to make its production debut in the second half of 2010. The i40 sedan will be marketed exclusively in Europe and will be available as a sedan or wagon type model.
Update: Hyundai today released the official press release about the iFlow concept. You can read it here:
An all-new concept car is set to catch the “i” of visitors to the Geneva Motor Show next month. Hyundai has chosen the event to reveal the i-flow, a stylish saloon that previews the look of its new D-segment contender.
Styled at the company’s European design headquarters in Rüsselsheim, Germany, i-flow is expected to attract much attention, thanks to its striking appearance – the latest product of the company’s evocative new form language, “fluidic sculpture”.
The name i-flow reflects the exceptionally aerodynamic shape and the flowing lines of the concept car’s eye-catching styling, and retains the “i” prefix of Hyundai’s established nomenclature.
The i-flow incorporates numerous new technologies from chemical company BASF, ranging from innovative lightweight materials to solar cells, to assist in reducing weight and improving energy efficiency.
More news of Hyundai’s star cars will be published in advance of the show and will be available on the stand. The company’s press conference will take place on Tueasdy, March 2nd.

wow looks VERY interesting. Especially love the creative windowlines and awesome sculpted forms. The rear window looks like it has a sort of flying buttress on the C-pillar much like the Ferrari 599… but that may me my eyes playing tricks on me~

Is it Europe version of YF sonata? (a.k.a I40)
or next generation sonata? (2016 sonata?)
February 13th, 2010 at 10:02 am
Perhaps we will see it in 2016 as the new Sonata. I see a lot of Sonanata DNA in this. (tail lights, rear side crease). I’m not sure though, I like the individual parts of the car (Front, back, taillights etc) but somehow it doesn’t work together. I think its cuz of the area where the lines meet. I like the Z crease in the Gen cooupe a lot better and is way cleaner. Maybe its the angle. The front reminds me of a Lotus and the rear, a spiced up 2011 Sonata.

No it is a preview of the European version of the YF as Sorento Owner said. Yes it isn’t something that we’re used to seeing, but isn’t it great to see Hyundai finally pushing the boundaries of design, alcyone?

Hmm interesting.. Certainly not a blatent rip off of anything out there now but the windows a bit busy for my tastes. Will wait for it in the skin but overall, looks good

I’d bet its the next generation Genesis. This will now fit in the current design line. With the next generation of cars coming The Genesis will be out of place. So that is my guess.. the 2014 Genesis.

The reports keep coming out that this will be the European Sonata replacement. Its everywhere Autoblog, Autoline, HyundaiReports, MotorAuthority, etc…
I think Hyundai is going away from the “World Car” scenario. I think its the best thing for the company.
Ill Explain:
Our Sonata is received well here and gets people excited, but the Europeans are luke warm about it. They need something different for their needs. Just like Europe gets i20 and we get Accent. Accent is great for America, but not for Europe. They needed a smaller product with smaller displacement engines.
February 18th, 2010 at 2:08 am
In Europe they put 1.6L engines (and even smaller) in sedans this big. Our American designed Sonata would get trounced on if it had engines that small. They would cry about how it doesnt handle etc. They are going to have to make the interior more luxurious and more full of tech. They are going to have to drop weight as well.
Yeah guys, the Europeans need a different Sonata.
They have a very discriminating taste, and are not fond of our products designed to be used in America too. Take Hyundai UKs sales. Hyundai UK sells 30K cars a year. If Hyundai Motor America sold cars in the same percentages relative to population we would sell about 100K cars a year (we sell that many Sonatas here and many more a year alone).
We have to attack Europe differently than what we use for America, and Asia.

Speaking about handling. 2011 Hyundai Sonata Outperforms Lexus ES350 and Mercedes C300 in Independent Tests involving: braking, Cornering, and active safety handling. These test were done by AMCI Automotive research.

Interesting. So the Europeans aren’t getting the “YF” 2011 Sonata? I thought the 2011 American Sonata looked good, but if this version goes to the Europeans I think I might become a little jealous haha.
February 18th, 2010 at 9:15 pm
Interesting! So more than one version of the same car… some will wish that they could get the European version and vise versa.
February 18th, 2010 at 10:13 pm
Our Sonata does look great to us, but when I go on European websites, they are either: ok with it, or they make Taxi Cab Jokes.
February 18th, 2010 at 10:59 pm
The European version would probably cost more. Their perception of Luxury is different. The Europeans say they would only see Hyundai as an upmarket brand if they got different products than us Americans.
They are going to need a Euro Genesis too. Something that would cost $60K here, but its fine in Europe as $60K for a car is like $30K for a car here.
February 18th, 2010 at 11:01 pm
I also think its good that they do this, so they can test tech out in Europe to work out the kinks before putting it in our cars.
February 18th, 2010 at 11:02 pm
The Equus is probably the only American market car we sell that would be acceptable in Europe.
February 19th, 2010 at 9:02 am
I hear Australia will get our Sonata as i45, and this iflow will be i40.
I wonder if they are going to do this system then?
i10
i20
i25-Accent
ix25-I wonder if we will get that now?
i30
i35-Elantra
ix35-Tuscon
i40
i45-Sonata
ix45-Santa Fe
i50
i55-Azera
ix55-Veracruz
February 19th, 2010 at 3:17 pm
I saw in Australia that the Sonata will be the i45. So I’m expecting the i40 to be more Euro Accord sized. Makes sense. The YF is just too big to compete there.
February 19th, 2010 at 8:20 pm
Really Derrick, I didnt know that. I knew weight was an issue, but size I didnt know.
The Sonata is supposedly a bigger car than before, yet I hear many people who’ve seen one and tested one say it feels and looks smaller than the last gen model.
February 20th, 2010 at 3:31 am
I imagine the European Sonata comming here as mabey a Genesis car if and when the branch into a luxury division.
February 20th, 2010 at 6:31 am
I do not really like the i-Flow. Looks very busy and full of decoration. pretty much weird.
February 21st, 2010 at 2:02 am
It looks very close in size to me, though on the inside it feels lower, especially in the rear seat.
February 21st, 2010 at 11:55 am
Derrick it’s Shorter than My Accent. They made it longer and wider.
