2010 Hyundai Santa Fe gets new 2.4L four-cylinder and 3.5L V6 engines
The 2010 Hyundai Santa Fe SUV gets more fuel efficient 2.4L four-cylinder and more powerful 3.5L V6 engines.
Hyundai has officially unveiled the 2010 Santa Fe SUV at the 2010 North American International Auto Show.
The most important news about the 2010 Santa Fe are two new engines; the 2.4L four-cylinder and 3.5L V6. Both engines had been tweaked to provide improved fuel-efficiency and more power over the previous offerings.
Available as an entry-level option, the 2.4L Theta II four-cylinder engine replaces previous entry-level unit (2.7L V6). With 175 horsepower and 169lb.-ft. of torque, the 2.4L Theta outperforms the afore-mentioned V6 engine in both, power and fuel economy. According to Hyundai, the 2.4L unit achieves 28 mpg highway and 20 mpg city fuel economy rating with front wheel drive set up.
For those who need more raw power, Hyundai also offers a 3.5L V6 Lambda engine in the 2010 Santa Fe. Its larger and more powerful than the 3.3L unit it replaces yet, it delivers 15 percent better fuel economy.
The 3.5L V6 churns out 276 horsepower and 248 lb.-ft., which is 34 horsepower and 22 more pound-feet of torque more than its predecessor. The mileage figures for the 3.5 V6-powered 2010 Hyundai Santa Fe are 20 mpg city and 26 mpg highway.
For the 2010 model year, the Santa Fe also received a mid-cycle sheet-metal refreshing. There is a new grille, fascia and fog-lights up-front, new body side moldings, redesigned alloy-wheels and new tail-light design.
The Santa Fe SUV also gets important enhancements inside the cabin. There’s a new touch-screen navigation system, which includes the rear-view camera. Steering-wheel mounted audio controls and Bluetooth hands-free connectivity are now a part of standard equipment.
The 2010 Hyundai Santa Fe is scheduled to go on sale this month at a base price of slightly less than $22,000.

Old news…our dealership has had these for a week or so already!! They do drive really nice, the 3.5 is smooth quite and will burn the wheels without too much trouble! It’s quick and athletic. As for the 2.4 way to go hyundai!! This is a much better set up than the old 2.7! Timing chain…no belt…for all those skeptics who think a four can’t out perform a six in heavier cars that is not the case. Though the 2.4 revs a little louder than the old 2.7 it’s is smooth consistent and comfortable!

Great news about the 2010 Hyundai Santa Fe, John! Is there already a huge demand for these new Santa Fes?
January 14th, 2010 at 9:16 pm
This really bugs me a lot. Santa Fes are built in Alabama, are’t they? If ture, does that mean they are producing two variants of 2.4, one with GDI and another without? It sounds like they are making things much more complex than it should be. Just an opinion.
January 14th, 2010 at 11:48 pm
Well you know eventually they will bring GDI to most if not all hyundai cars. Right now they can only build enough GDI engines for the Sonata. There is also cost issue trying to put it into their CUV/SUV. Once they bring those cost down you will see GDI in them.
January 15th, 2010 at 2:58 am
That’s the thing. Building two different engine in the same line would also has some cost issues. Maybe it’s cheaper to build both in the same line at the moment.
January 15th, 2010 at 2:16 pm
Well it’s not really two different engines. It’s one engine of the same basic block with different heads and other bolt-on parts. It was the same situation with the 3.3L V6. It wasn’t the exact same engine for the Santa Fe and NF Sonata. And it’s those bolt-on parts that differ on the GDI engine that are so expensive. I think Hyundai feels they must maintain their price advantage right now and since the Equinox FWD is the only major competitor pullling significantly bigger numbers right now, they probably didn’t think it worth the extra expense this MY until they have more miles on customer cars to make sure no hiccups remain.
January 15th, 2010 at 6:58 pm
I heard they are moving all Santa Fe production to nearby Georgia at the (even newer)Kia plant, where they will make the new Kia Sorento and Hyundai Santa Fe side by side. They will then manufacture the Hyundai Sonata and Kia Optima at the Alabama plant!!!! Neat stuff.
January 15th, 2010 at 7:51 pm
No way Hyundai builds a Kia, if the Santa Fe moves they will bring in another Hyundai. Kia does not sell enough vehicles to keep the Hyundai plant at full capcity if they only built the Sonata and Optima.

I wish I could cite this…I read it somewhere I know I did.
OK I found the article!

January 15th, 2010 at 9:00 pm
And you are correct, the article does not say that the Optima will be built, but it does say other Hyundia sedans…my mistake
January 15th, 2010 at 9:58 pm
According to what I read, the next Elantra will be built in Montgomery to replace the Santa Fe.
January 15th, 2010 at 10:00 pm
Oh yeah, the Optima will also be produced at West Point.

I was surprised to see this on hyundai-blog as we have been selling the new 2010 Santa Fe up here in Canada for 5 or so weeks. I have been driving one for the last month. Impressive improvements on an already great vehicle. The refreshed powertrains bring the fuel economy in line (or better) with our competition and the new front facia gives the truck a more agressive look.

Bud,
Hyundai apparently embargoed the information just for the NAIAS. Many dealers in the U.S. had received cars well before this. Hyundai even removed a press release after a day or two on their media site back in late Nov. I believe so they could make the “offical” announcement in Detroit. Guess they want to have some announcement for every show.
January 22nd, 2010 at 7:03 am
Hyundai sould start naming their cars and trucks for the US market like Korea. If not I think US dealers should have a decal made for it available:
Left Side Accent- Center Hyundai Symbol -Right side RB160, RB160H, RB160T, and RB200 and FS160, FS 160T, FS160H, FS 200.
Left Side= Elantra- Center= Hyundai Symbol -Right Side= MD160, MD 200T, MD200.

I really wish Hyundai would update their damn site. They have been running commercials with all the new models for over a month.
It is really frustrating how they don’t update their site until dealers have “sufficient” inventory. It makes them look really stupid to have a previous MY model on their site.
January 25th, 2010 at 6:00 am
Mitch, maybe some dealers are having trouble getting rid of the 09s, and the company is trying to get rid of the few the have left as quickly as possible?
Remember, they were selling 07 Tibs up until like May 09.
The Sonata is going to take a While to get to Dealers I think. I hear dealers are having a harder time getting rid of 10s.
January 25th, 2010 at 6:02 am
Hell, some dealers still are selling Tibs until they get rid of every last one.
Who in the hell would want a Tib when you have all of the other new Hyundai products?
January 25th, 2010 at 8:59 am
Good question. Why get a Tib when you can get a Genesis!
January 26th, 2010 at 4:18 am
Genesis Coupe has better performance and MPG than Tib. The Tib eliminated itself, via Hyundai change.
Hyundai needs the Veloster as Accent Hatch, and Maybe a Sonata/Elantra Coupe.
The Kind of performance and Size the Veloster is proposed to be and give wont be want Tib Owners would want, but exactly what Accent Owners want. The Genesis coupe provides that performance and more.
Tib Owners are going to have to suck it up. Or Beg Hyundai to make an Elantra/Sonata based Coupe.
January 26th, 2010 at 4:21 am
Or Jump ship to KIA when they make their coupe. Its no big deal as if you buy the KIA, the Money ultimately ends up in the same place.
January 26th, 2010 at 4:23 am
The 4 Cyl Tib got less performance and MPG than V6 Gen Coupe. And Genesis Coupe Including the R Spec costs the same as outgoing Tib to start.
January 26th, 2010 at 4:26 am
Genesis Coupe Killed the Tiburon, not Hyundai.
January 26th, 2010 at 4:33 am
Sorry Tib guys, but Hyundai wont skimp on a 5000 a month car like Accent and give it another Mediocre hatch, while a car with a 1000 a month sales following gets the best!!!
If Hyundai does that its the most stupid business proposition ever, and I wont buy any Hyundai product in protest.
January 26th, 2010 at 4:36 am
If HyundaiSmoke says he’s going to protest you better take that seriously!!!!
January 26th, 2010 at 8:02 pm
Wow hyundaismoke what a loser always spamming post on here. Don’t you have anything better to do. Who cares what you think.
January 26th, 2010 at 11:29 pm
Lmao@ your immaturity Roger.
January 27th, 2010 at 7:28 am
@ RogerL,
HyundaiSmoke a regular contributor on this blog and I can see how the ‘abundance’ of posts might lead you to believe it is spam.
Sample of 1 and tho I don’t agree with everything he says, I believe HyundaiSmoke to be extremely insightful and a valuable member to this site..
January 27th, 2010 at 9:42 am
Thanks Alex, I think its funny. I do have a few haters.
January 27th, 2010 at 12:06 pm
Hmm I haven’t seen any updates to this blog lately. What gives? There are already 2011 Elantra spyshots out and yet there isn’t even a category here! Anyways, I guess I’ll just post the video here. This is what I found on the inturdnetz today: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YdElrpGvL6I looks like the 2011 Elantra is out for a test drive in South Korea! So far the outline looks far more substantial than the current Elantra and has a sporty look as well as more road presence. I hope this will turn out as well as the Sonata and I hope the new 2011 Azera will also look fabulous. I’m interested in what Hyundai can offer in between the current Sonata and the Genesis sedan. Should be quite interesting!
January 27th, 2010 at 6:48 pm
Like i said HyundaiSmoke is a loser. Look at the time stamp at 7 comments he made in a row. He woke up 4am just the write that now thats a loser. Hes not a contriutor he just talk about nonsences most of the time. He thinks he knows everything about hyundai. And this is not the only site he spams on. He goes on other sites and talk about hyundai all day long.
January 28th, 2010 at 4:27 am
Yeah, that Elantra will be the best alcyone.
January 28th, 2010 at 6:02 am
@ RogerL
So what if he gets up at 3am to make 1000 comments? Did it ever occur to you that maybe he is passionate about cars or about Hyundai? Who are you to judge another person? You suddenly omnipotent overseer of all car blogs?
I am sure you are not a fool Roger. However, truth be told, you are making yourself look like a complete dumb@ss by trying to justify your rationale..
January 28th, 2010 at 7:34 am
That Elantra on back of that truck has pics of it driving in the snow.

Alex, that’s what happens when you go and advocate Hyundai/KIA everywhere=you get haters that follow you. Advocacy of any kind spurs on the haters. We just have to keep them at bay.
I do it for a living in Social services, where I actually have real haters to deal with about real everyday things, as opposed haters looking to discredit someone.
January 28th, 2010 at 7:59 am
Those time stamps are never accurate. It’s 2AM where I live. Let’s see what the time stamp says.

Hey guys! I have a 2008 Santa Fe Limited AWD, and I noticed the 2010’s have a new tail light design and was wondering if anyone knows if they will fit my 2008, and where can I get them. Reason being, the blinkers on the 2008 suck! And they are not that noticeable, and the new ones are much better. Suprised more of the older models don’t get rearended more. Anyway, just wondering and I live in New Jersey. Thanks so much!
February 2nd, 2010 at 11:44 pm
They should fit, because the overall rear-light design has not been changed.
