First days of 2010 bring us some nice close-up spy shots of new Hyundai Elantra MD!
Say hello to next-generation Hyundai Elantra! The Korean carmaker is shaping up its all-new family sedan that is going to feature a combination of head-turning exterior look and cutting-edge technology.
Set to go on sale in 2011, the all-new Elantra takes much of its styling inspiration from the all-new Sonata sedan, which has made its official unveiling at the L.A. Auto Show in December, and adopts many styling cues from the so-called four-door coupe segment.
The forth-coming compact sedan from Hyundai gets a sleek and really sporty side profile with short front and rear overhangs. The 2011 Hyundai Elantra is expected to feature a completely revamped front and rear fascias with redesigned Hyundai signature grille and stretched back head-lamps.
Under the skin is a fresh development of the current Elantra’s platform, so it is unlikely the new model will grow much in size. Emphasis will be put on ride and refinement, without sacrificing the sharp steering and driver appeal.
Four-cylinder engines will dominate Elantra’s engine line-up. The 1.6L gasoline engine is expected to be the entry-level engine, while a beefed-up 1.6L Turbo engine is also rumored to be in the works. Both of the engines will combine great performance with low CO2 emissions and class-leading fuel consumption.
Expect the 2011 Hyundai Elantras -MD to start hitting the U.S. streets in late 2010 or early 2011.

Short overhangs look nice but still not sold on that rear window tear-drop shaped glass. Will hold reservation until I see the final product but not feeling that design cue at this point..

About a month back when Hyundaismoke theorized that the Accent might possibly enter the entry-level sub-compact/compact car line, I was skeptical.
Now that I’m seeing the shots, I’m starting to think he might have been right!

With a 1.6 gdi engine and 6 speed automatic, this could be my next everyday driving/commuter car — great gas mileage, great warranty, doesn’t look embarrassing to drive, affordable, etc…

Since the Elantra is getting the Standard Accent Powertrain as a “Blue” Model, I wonder if they will give the Accent a 1.4 GDi as a Blue? I think if Accent and Elantra are going to have hybrids, then why even bother with a gas only “Blue” model, on the Accent at least?

JG, I thought HED-5 was going to be Next Gen Elantra Toruing. John K already spilled beans on About.com telling Aaron Gould that there would be an Elantra Coupe. He also stated that everything under Sonata will be an exciting product, and a class leading product.
Aaron Gould begged Krafcik to give Accent 40 more HP, a 5 door Accent Hatch, and an an Elantra with bold styling. Then Krafick said, the “SE” moniker on all Hyundai cars in the Future will be Turbos. So expect a revolutionary Accent and Elantra SE.

Smoke, I just re-read John’s About.com interview and no where did he mention an Elantra Coupe. As far as I know, the first hint of such a product was at his HyundaiThinkTank.com live chat.

Im sorry I did read the article a while back. I got it confused with an article they did about the 2011 lineup, right after the John K interview. It was like a Hyundai Fairy with the initials JK told him what was coming. As this has been the most acurate Hyundai 2011 forecast coming from any non-hyundai related site Ive ever been to.

Concept, I think the Veloster and Accent hatchback car the same car, just like the Crossover and the Elantra Hatch are the same car. Well see but a small compact crossover and an Elantra hatch would cannibalize each other in the same manner Accent hatch and Veloster would cannibalize each other.
Accent Hatch is the seller among Accents, and Accent is the second largest selling small car in America all year behind the Nissan Versa. Why get rid of something that’s not broken from a sales standpoint?

With an Elantra Coupe, they will have to do something to the lower spec of the Gen Coupe. I think gen Coupe should be a V6 and V8 car only.

Agreed. Every time Hyundai releases a redesign, their designs become more and more distinct. Fluidic sculpture. Not completely original, but then again, who designs original designs? The Sonata and increasingly the Elantra are beginning to remind me of fictional cars shown in Steven Spielburg movies. Art cues taken and reused in their finest. I’m drooling.

Considering i started with an 86 hyundai excel (loved it) and then moved on to an 03 elantra i will be standing by at the dealership waiting for them to arrive. These cars look amazing now! I just hope the turbo SE isn’t just a rumor as well as the coupe Elantra.

I will personally spit on one if they bring one to United States with a 1.6. 2.0 liter is minimum standard here for compact cars like elantra.

I wouldn’t be to worried about the displacement of the motor if it is a 1.6 if it generates more hp then the 138 in the 2.0 now. If you look at the estimates it should be upwards of 140 hp NA and 175 turbo’d… So your actually getting more hp and mpg with a smaller more effective motor. But we are all going to have to sit back to see the final product when it gets here!

Plus the 1.6L will be in the Elantra “Blue” model only. The 2.0L will be the standard engine.
Standard US Hyundai Engine Displacements
Accent= 1.6
Elantra= 2.0
Sonata= 2.4
Azera= 2.7
Genesis 3.6
If they do an Accent “Blue”, they should either use the a 1.4 GDI or have it as a Hybrid model. OR DONT HAVE IT AT ALL!!! It really cheapens the car.

People complain about vents in this car, however smaller car than Sonata=smaller air vents. What Compact car on the market has air vents as huge as the Sonata’s? If they do keep it like that, there will be plenty of quality aftermarket interior garnish kits that can clean that up.
Like I said, I think with better production interior materials, this car will be absolutely fanstastic. Im a big fan of that interior from a design standpoint.

3.8L Hyundaismoke… (for the Genesis)
Anyways… I am just-out of college guy with a stable job, and I am seriously looking in to buying this car Because: 1. I don’t like Japanese cars, especially after mass recall of Toyota 2. Ford Focus/Chevrolet Cobalt looks hideous/too generic. 3. I don’t want to buy from a maker that doesn’t have any brand recognition (this is where Kia Forte goes) and credit. I was going to go buy the current one, until I heard about this and prospect of owning a 2.0GDI ~170HP engine car for 17 grand excited me. But if they are going to use a 1.6GDI, I may have to think twice.

What the article means by entry level is the “Blue” model. The stripped down version with the ultra fuel efficient powertrain, and I dont think you would want the stripped down version.
Youll probably want the GLS or even SE variants.

So if they use a 2.0 is it going to be the same beta 2 motor or a totally redesigned motor? I know the Beta 2 is a good motor but it is dated technology. Even if they use a smaller motor i don’t think i will think twice as long as the power is the same as the older motor. Considering i have a motorcycle with a 998 cc motor making 160hp i don’t really believe bigger is always better as long as you get the most out of what you have.

Nah fighter, They call it Theta II 2.0. I guess they are making a Theta Family of 2.0+ Engines.
The New Engines:
The very Small Engines sub 1.4 are called Kappas.
The 1.4, 1.6 4 Cyl engines are called Gammas.
The 2.0, 2.4 4 Cyl Engines are called Thetas.
The 2.7 V6 is called the Mu.
The 3.3, 3.8 V6s are Lambdas.
The 4.6, 5.0, 5.5 V8s are Taus.

The Betas are gone, the Alphas are gone. Accent/Rio uses the last alpha. It sells well despite the Antiquated powertrain that gives it best in class fuel Economy tied MINI Cooper, and the despite rivals more modern powertrains (except the MINIs). This car is second place in US subcompact sales, behind Nissan Versa.
That is hardly without any marketing either (Versa had tons of marketing). That’s despite the contrvosersial styling. Despite people hating on how cheap some base trims are. That’s without a 5 door model either.
Gamma GDI will really take this car where it needs to be in the future.

Is it going to be the same 2.0 from the genesis coupe with out a turbo then? If so is there any spec’s on the hp without a turbo. As well with the 2.4 i am guessing that will be in an SE model? So with this in mind are they going to have three different motor options for the Elantra with a Turbo maybe somewhere in that selection?

Yeah Fighter, its the Gen Coupe Engine without the Turbo and it will have GDI. The KIA Forte, C’eed, and Soul have this very engine without GDI or a Turbo. This Engine with a Turbo and GDI will become a hot hatch, Could be Accent/Veloster. However, it will show up on the Elantra SE as well.
I think the Gen Coupe will get Access to the Sonata 2.4 GDI Turbo (will be unveiled soon).

It makes sense to put the 2.4 in the gen coupe if they are going to use the 2.0T in an Elantra, It would keep the customer base for the Coupe and probably make it more attractive with the more powerful base model motor. If they hold the 210 hp over to the Elantra that will be a really hot car to buy, hopefully a AWD option will surface later.
