New 2012 Hyundai Veloster coupe spy shots
The all-new 2012 Hyundai Veloster Coupe hits the streets…
These are the very first spy shots of the all-new 2012 Hyundai Veloster coupe, which is scheduled to go on sale in late 2010 or early 2011 and is expected to replace the discontinued Tiburon coupe in the U.S. market.
Inspired by the two-door Veloster concept car from the 2007 Seoul auto show, the production-ready Veloster coupe packs attractive exterior body style with slopping roof-line and short front and rear overhangs.
Heavy camouflage attached to the body of new Veloster prevents us to see other styling details, but we expect the final design to stay close to the initial design idea, first previewed by Veloster concept.
According to John Krafcik, the CEO of Hyundai Motor America, the production-ready model will look 70-80% like the Veloster concept. When interviewed by Inside Line earlier this month, Krafcik also revealed the production version of the Veloster will sport a surprise bodystyle feature that has never before been seen in the small car segment.
Codenamed FS, the all-new Hyundai Veloster coupe is tipped to feature a host of new powertrain technologies under the hood, including a turbocharged four-cylinder engine, gasoline direct injection -GDI technology and dual-clutch automatic transmission.
It was revealed earlier this month that the showroom-ready Hyundai Veloster will be powered by 1.6L four-cylinder engine, which features direct injection technology and churns out impressive 140+ horsepower. The entry-level powerplant is expected to achieve over 40 mpg!
Another engine option, also rumoured to appear under the hood of new Hyundai Veloster, includes a 175-hp turbocharged 1.6L gasoline engine, which will likely be paired with Hyundai’s new dual-clutch automatic transmission.

Sweet Accent hatch shots. Im saving for it now.
December 30th, 2009 at 3:13 pm
Wow didn’t expect this so soon! I’m curios if they’ll keep the original grill. And that huge camo’ed area in the back is really piquing my interest.
December 30th, 2009 at 3:15 pm
Also note the center dual exhaust. Cant wait to see some more revealing shots.
December 30th, 2009 at 3:41 pm
This is going to be seriously cool!
December 30th, 2009 at 4:12 pm
One word: Impressive.
December 30th, 2009 at 4:40 pm
Alex, Im thinking Tuscon Grille. Alcyone, save the pics and blow them up. The top 1/2 of the rear is all glass. I see a rear window center spoiler too.
December 30th, 2009 at 4:58 pm
I think when Hyundai releases this vehicle it should have a marketing tagline below the model name of this vehicle that says, “Hyundai yeah. Cool”
December 30th, 2009 at 10:25 pm

Its a Hatch any way you try to put it. So why continue to call it coupe?
Coupes have trunks like a 4 door car, hatches have hatches. That’s the point of the classification. Gen Coupe and Tib=Coupes. Accent Blue GS SE, Elantra Touring, and Veloster=Hatches.
Hey, thats what a Coupe enthusiast would say too. Im a little of a coupe enthusiast myself so I know, but Im a big time Hatch Enthusiast. Market the thing as the “New Original Hot Hatch” and I promise youll get better sales than to market it as a coupe.
Plus, callng it a coupe when it is a hatch is bad for your customers insurance premiums. I pay $30 extra a month on my Accent than what I really should be paying, becuase Hyundai calls the Accent Hatches-coupes.
Premium Hot hatch on the bottom, and Luxury Sport Coupe on the top. Now they need a coupe based off the Elantra or Sonata.
Also, taking out the truthful verifiable sentence that says it will be “Accent Sized” sounds like somebody is hiding something.
Hummmmm………………..

This isnt 1992 guys. Most Gen Yers who arent dorks like myself, know nothing of 70s and 80s POS Hatches.
Its ok to call it hatch now.
December 31st, 2009 at 4:03 am
If you put it that way, then the Tiburon is also a hatchback, and 4 door vehicles can also have hatches, ie. wagons and weird stuff like the Skoda Superb. Nevertheless, I completely agree with you on the “Hot Hatch” marketing idea.
December 31st, 2009 at 4:03 am
Many people in my age group want 5 door hatches too, but only buy small sedans becuase it was the best deal they could do possible.
The Accent is always #2 in small car sales, and not #1 for a reason= no 5 door hatch. Young People want Accents, but wthout a 5 door hatch and everybody including MINI has a 5 door hatch now, why buy an Accent.
However, I think its astonishing that the Accent is cosistently #2 in small car sales despite not having a 5 door.
If you guys do bring out a 5 door dont wait until 2013 to do it. It needs to be out as soon as the sedan and Veloster hatch are out.
Raise a Veloster up and elongate it= nice 5 door Accent Hatch.
December 31st, 2009 at 4:06 am
The 2003-2008 Model had a trunk If I remember Patrick.
December 31st, 2009 at 4:19 am
Yeah Elantra/i30CW, Superb, etc… are wagons. However, in the US Mommy Wagon is still a derogatory term. Thats why Next Gen i30CW/Elantra Touring wll be a Crossover.
December 31st, 2009 at 4:27 am
Nope, even the GK was a hatch.
December 31st, 2009 at 4:39 am
It looks like a good competition to Mini coopers to me. Even the power train options are similar. The exterior will be exciting as it will look 70~80% alike to Veloster concept.
The only question now is the interior design.

@ John: nice catch on the exhaust. A little porsche-esque? Whatever, it is going to be a stunner. Let’s see if Hyundai can build upon an unbelievable 2008/2009.. (My money is betting they will continue with strong momentum)
December 31st, 2009 at 4:47 am
I still think this is an Accent hatch. Nothing wrong with using the name of the second largest seller in its class in the US on such a revolutionary hatch poduct. If would only benefit Hyundai more actually. To take the Accent name and grow it like Golf, Civic, Corolla, MINI is what the car even needs more. Accent is becoming a hatch leader, that would only be better for the car with a “Halo” Hatch.
It uses the same powertrains as Next Gen Accent Sedan, and rides on the same platform. We know the company has said many times it will be “Accent Sized.”
Exterior Dimensions:
Current Gen Accent Specs:
Wheelbase (in.) 98.4
Length (in.) 159.3
Width (in., excludes mirrors) 66.7
Height (in.) 57.9
Tread width (in., front/rear) 57.9/57.5
Curb weight (lbs., MT/AT) 2467/2504
Veloster Specs:
Length 161.4 inches
Width 70.5 inches
Height 57.1 inches
Wheelbase 102.4 inches

I think the whole Veloster story is a plot by Hyundai to hide a revolutionary change in the Accent Hatch, that will trump competitors to the point to where they cant compete. No rival expect MINI can even come close to competing with that Veloster hatch, and still we will beat them in standard fuel eocnomy and power
Remember how Hyundai played along with the whole next gen
Tiburon thing espoused by the media, and spy photographers with the Gen Coupe for a while until the production model was unveiled? I think that’s what they are doing now with the Accent. Make people think its some speical or a next gen variant of a car, when they are really hiding a revolutionary change.
They cant compete let the cat out of the bag already, its ok Ive seen the spyshots and read about next Gen Yaris, Versa, Aveo, Swift, etc…..
Compared to this car, there’s nothing home to write about, and insult to injury. Those other cars in their own right will be outstanding products. Easily a finalist for 2012 Motor Trend car of the year, and 2012 North American car of the Year.

I was playin with the photos on my computer, zoomin in & out , tryin to catch any details i can, Btw i love that exhaust outlet, sumthin different! Also call me crazy but i wouldnt consider a mini to this!
January 1st, 2010 at 3:59 am
Yes, I like the exhaust but I can see this is not going to be a fav of mine. As most of you guys know I like Sedans my first Hyundai was a used 88 Excell… It’s a personal thing… Once you have been in a accident in a large city with more than 2 people in a car .. the riders are thankful ther are more than 2 ways out of a car. That’s all I’ll say. This is nice though. Oh and when that accident is is in the snow… … ok I’m done now.
Happy New Year!
January 1st, 2010 at 4:16 am
Youre not crazy John, the MINI is smaller than this car, not as fuel efficient, nor has our Hyundai Reliablity either.
We should compare proposed veloster specs to actual MINI Specs
The Powertrains for this car will be:
1. 1.6L 140-145 HP GDI=45 MPG est.
2. 1.6L 176 HP GDI Turbo=41+ MPG est.
3. Hybrid-1.6 GDI with electric Torque converter-140-145 HP, 50+ MPG est.
4. TOP SECRET-2.0 Super hot hatch Variant 200 HP+ (gunning for GTI and MINI JCW).
MINI Powertrains/And Specs:
Cooper Powertrains:
1. 1.6L VVT 118 HP 37 MPG Manual/33 MPG Automatic.
2. 1.6 Turbo MINI (JCW) 208 HP 33 MPG Manual/29 MPG Automatic.
January 1st, 2010 at 4:53 am
Is that the 56 HP model EB? Yeah tht thing had a lot of heart. I was a little kid in 88, but when I heard the hate from adults about Hyundai. I knew these guys were going to be something.
January 1st, 2010 at 4:49 pm
much difference from my first Hyundai Pony GL 1400 5 speeds rwd from 1985. damn that car was a funny trash cann! but loved it!
Genesys is the first RWD hyundai offer…. nooooooo!
i was drifting in winter with a ‘85 Pony! Yeah!
January 1st, 2010 at 7:38 pm
Exactly Attabuy, boy are people even college educated journalists quite ignorant about Hyundai Cars. If I remember from looking at history, everything that Hyundai made until 86 was RWD.
86 was the big “We’re coming to America” Year, and I guess the company just abandoned RWD from there. Im not a fan of RWD, but some of these journalists are comical with their lack of historical knowledge about our products.

Who on here remembers the Hyundai Scoupe? I always thought those were a cool little coupe that got overlooked?
January 2nd, 2010 at 2:43 am
I was a kid, but they were popular with a lot of drug dealers where where I lived. Just like those Suzuki Samurais. I want a KIA Soulster bad, I mean very bad.
KIA Soulster Concept and this Coupe= in top 25 list of most important cars 2010-2020.
January 2nd, 2010 at 6:09 pm
You guys notice how the Camo covers on the side stretch all the way down to the ground. I Know they said therewas ging to be a MINI Clubman Rear side door opening configuraton. Howeverm thy said it was oing to be on the Rear Passeneger side. Maybe they decided todo it on both sides. It would be nice if they did on on both sides and a door configuration on one side. it comes with the rear Passenger side door as standard, but add the Driver’s side door as an opton. Charge $1000 extra for the 5th door.
Tha would give it the functionality of a 5 foor hatch, but the look of a 3 door hatch. Hyundai has always had a corporate cultural problem with small car 5 door hatches. Maybe this is their way of compromising.
January 3rd, 2010 at 2:57 pm
I noticed that to HyundaiSmoke, there consealing the whole rear of the car for good reason,I still think it would be cool to have a glass roof like the concept but thats a cost & weight issue!! so far tho i like what I see!
January 3rd, 2010 at 11:55 pm
For some reason I think they are bringing back the “GT” moniker as well. You know, Elantra GT and Accent GT. It was a comment Krafick made about the idea of more Gran Turismo features and styling in the brand.
You can Package a car like Accent:
Blue
GS/GLS
SE
GT
January 3rd, 2010 at 11:55 pm
I think this is the car I was shopping for in the spring. Sigh. Oh well, I have to admit I’m enjoying my Accent SE hatch, which has been flawless and a hoot in the twisties. I will definitely be keeping my eye on this little buggy when I surfaces though, maybe for 2012.
Can we have a six-speed please Hyundai? That would seal the deal.
January 3rd, 2010 at 11:59 pm
Give each different car an engine choice.
Blue/GS/GLS-super fuel ecomony.
SE-Turbo Variant of the GS motor.
GT-Share a the smallest Turbo from a larger car.
Lets say the Veloster is the Accent Hatch have the GT variant share gen Coupe Turbo.
January 4th, 2010 at 12:02 am
Hako, this car will get a DSG-like system.
January 5th, 2010 at 10:38 pm
I also noticed that the production model has a frame around the front door windows where as the concept didn’t.
January 6th, 2010 at 1:11 am
Me Too John, but that makes it look more feasible than the concept though.
January 9th, 2010 at 8:38 pm
IM EXCITED TO SEE HOW THE INTERIOR SHAPES UP 2 BE, I HEARD ITS SUPPOSED TO BE SIMPLE YET MODERN WITH A MULTI FUNCTION DASH DISPLAY?
January 16th, 2010 at 9:29 am
Its supposed to have a standard screen.
