Hyundai Genesis Coupe 2.0 Turbo R to hit the streets
Hyundai reveals it plans to debut a tuner-friendly version of Genesis Coupe 2.0 Turbo R-spec at the next week’s SEMA.
With the official introduction scheduled for the upcoming Specialty Equipment Market Association (SEMA) Show, which is taking place in Las Vegas next week, Hyundai is adding a new version of its popular rear-wheel-drive Genesis Coupe to its US line-up.
Known as a tuner-ready car, the 2.0 Turbo Spec-R Genesis Coupe takes the core performance equipment from the 2.0T Track model and shuns non-essential convenience equipment, such as multifunction steering wheel, Bluettoth and cruise control, to reduce both, its weight and cost.
Priced at $23.750, the 2.0L R-Spec Hyundai Genesis Coupe costs a hefty $3.000 less than the same 2.0T Track model. For that price, buyer gets a Genesis Coupe equipped with a set of 19-inch gunmetal-finish alloys with high-performance Bridgestone Potenza tires (225/40YR19 tires in front and 245/40YR19 tires at rear),Brembo brakes, track-tuned suspension and Torsen limited-slip differential.
Other equipment include safety and convenience features such as six-airbags, active front head restraints, ABS, ESP with traction control, Electronic Brake-Force Distribution and Brake Assist. The R-spec Coupe also features Air conditioning, Tire Pressure Monitoring System, leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob, power windows (one-touch up and down), door locks and mirrors, MP3 audio system with six speakers, remote keyless entry system, Projector beam headlamps and iPod-USB-Aux jack connectivity.
The 2.0 Turbo R-spec Hyundai Genesis Coupe is equipped with a powerful 2.0L turbocharged four-cylinder engine that packs 210 horsepower. The engine features dual continuously variable valve timing technology and provides the Coupe with lively performance, while at the same time, it also achieves an impressive 30 miles per gallon fuel economy.

The center stack looks better w/o the plastic Aluminum trim though Hyundai should have left steering controls intact(at least the stereo)

Agreed. The faux silver really cheapens the car…should have put nice piano black instead. Take the silver off the stearing wheel too and give it basic audio controls.

A lot of value here. A nice canvas to start with..

That is a STEAL! Great job Hyundai
October 31st, 2009 at 12:01 pm
If was Hyundai id put the 2.0T in the Elantra, and give the Genesis a Direct Injected 2.4 T. Tons more power and MPG.
Why not?
October 31st, 2009 at 12:04 pm
Most Journals hate on the 2.0T, Im just being real. They compared our Near Luxury Genesis Coupe to a Souped-up Econo car like the Civic Si.
We need something to shut them up, once and for all.
Just take the 2.4 from the KIA Forte, Turbo it, and Direct inject it and drop in the Genesis coupe and call it a day.

Thats not plastic, thats brushed aluminum, which most of the time looks like plastic.
I guess they have to offer a lower cost model of everything, at least they didnt make it look cheap. It looks bland, like a last Generation Audi Product. I just hope the the next Generation versions of the small cars dont get that uber-cheap variant anymore.
I dont mind the company making Cheap Accents and Elantras, as we have to maintain current customers that might be put off by the upmarket intentions of the company, but damm do they really make the make the Cheapest versions of the Accent and Elantra that cheap?
It makes our brand look horrid, and doesnt look good for our upmarket apsirations.

Small Cars:
The Rio should be the $9970 car, and the cheapest Accent should come at about $12,000.
KIA would sell tons of Rios if they made the prices lower, Hyundai would sell tons more Accents if they left the cheap variants that scare prospective customers away out of the lineup. The Accent the way it is with some option, marketing. and lineup adjustments could be an 8000 unit a month car.
Big Cars:
The Sonata should have a value model to get people who are truly concerned about price into a Big Sedan
The Sonata should replace the Azera, and should have an “Ultra Sonata” (Even Strechted wheelbased Mondel).
The Genesis should have a Technology and Performance Model. 500 HP etc…..
The Genesis should also have a “Blue” Model with a smaller powertrain that gets 29-31 MPG and cost $27,000.
October 31st, 2009 at 10:27 pm
No, it is silver painted plastic.
I think the beauty of the 2.0 (and even the 3.8 for that matter) is that power gains are achieved even with the slightest change. Whilst they may not shine in stock form, Hyundai got the tune-ability part right.
Also, the Hyundai lineup is great the way it is. The Azera/Grandeur should be left alone and it seems that it will, as the Kia VG (Cadenza/K7) is rumored to be based on the next-gen Azera platform. Not only would a LWB Sonata be a marketing fail, it would look pug-ugly as its proportions will be messed up. I also think that a larger engine (read 5.0 from Equus) should find it’s way into the Genesis when the market stabilizes… maybe with the facelift? I’m not so sure about a Blue model, especially at that price, for the Genesis. Maybe an R diesel could power it instead of a petrol powerplant?
Yeah so that post was generally directed at Smoke…

I disagree Partrick. Our lineup is great if we were Toyota/Lexus, but being Hyundai we have still have many things to prove. Marketing is not getting the job done. Look at the KIA Forte. It only sells 4500 units a month, the car it replaced sold 8000 units a month regularly. Therefore, our products must dominate and crush the competition.
People listen to these auto journalists online before buying a car these days, and when an auto journalist says “Well, this Accent center console is cheap, or the Forte is a car that has been exectued beautifully in terms of fit and finish but I wouldnt buy it becuase it doesnt perform like the competition, The Mazda Speed 3 is better than the more powerful more luxurious Genesis because the mazda is more fun” say bye bye to about 200,000 units of yearly sales potential, becuase its hard to get those people who got turned off back on the radar.
October 31st, 2009 at 11:33 pm
The Cars the Forte competes with sell 15,000+ a month, despite how good the Forte is, its still getting slaughtered out there.
We cant just provide stuff that’s just a little better than the competition, or a better value than the competition. We have to crush them to embarass them, like we got embarassed when the US government decided to lower our (Hyundai/KIA)fuel economy by 5MPG 3 years ago, while the other makes only got their MPG dropped by 2.
October 31st, 2009 at 11:36 pm
The Accent was a very desirable car with waiting lists when it first came out becuase it was rated at 37 MPG, then when the EPA dropped to 32 MPG, sales fell off a cliff.
You guys up there in Canada didnt have that Accent problem like we did down here.

By the way that Benefited Japanese makes more than anybody.
November 2nd, 2009 at 9:06 am
We can all dream Smoke but that isn’t what Hyundai/Kia is capable of doing right now. Their priority is to make quality products that are accessible to the general public who earn an average wage. They are making their vehicles as good as the price allows them and they are doing an excellent job of it.

Not topic relevent but look at this. after a BMW X5 “passed over” a 2004 Elantra GT in a parking…!!! Here is Hyundai Auto Canada’s response to the crushed Elantra owner…

While I agree on some of the idea about pricing hyundai line up, I think we just let them do whatever they are doing now.
Hyundai positions themselves in a weird place at the moment. The cheapest car on the market and BMW 7/MB S fighter are manufactured by the very same company.
I think they should not really change the strategy on the low price cars, because the “price tag” is the most powerful marketing tool at the point of time. I know people with wierd logic all around me. It is like this.
Q: “I am looking for an econo-box”
A: “Go to a Toyota dealership”
Q: “I am looking for a family sedan”
A: “Go to a Toyota dealership”
Q: “I am looking for an entry level luxury car”
A: Go to a Lexus(Toyota) dealership”
They are so bound to a brand and do not even look back anywhere. The only way to make them look around at this point of time is really price, IMO.
November 3rd, 2009 at 3:21 am
Interesting points Dave but I would disagree personally. Based on your reasoning, would the econo-box question elicit a Hyundai, Honda and Toyota response? There are a lot of entry level luxury cars in the stable and the Genesis sedan looks to be grabbing a larger piece of the pie.
It’s not all about Toyota anymore - that 3+ million vehicle recall with floormats/accelerators not doing wonders for Toyota’s image.
Although the Genesis Sedan/Equus can arguably be matched up against BMW 7 and MB S, wouldn’t neccesarily call them ‘BMW/MB fighters’. Agree it is a rather unique positioning in the market place but with the Chinese set up make a push in the next decade, it makes more sense to me to take the brand upmarket. A tough climb but not much of a choice. The only way, imo, is to continue to improve quality, keep price at a slight discount to Japanese competitors and keep the designs cutting edge. Market share will continue to climb with this simple formula..

When I say Entry Level Luxury, just look at the Current Gen Elantra, and Sonata, just look at the PT Cruiser. Look at how the Elantra is priced and optioned. Whats wrong with Hyundai making Entry Level Luxury cars at the Working man’s price? Why not have chrome, good quality but lower cost leather, HIDs, on the Accent? That’s all they need to do to it. Why cant we sell Mercurys and Buicks but at lower prices? We can do it. Hell, we already can put Leather in a Forte for $1500, Why not an Accent for $1000 Extra?
Hyundai is going upmarket, and they have to serious about it. That means putting in Genesis Appointments in the small cars too, I think the company will listen in the long run. Having the $9970 Accent Blue in the lineup actually turns some would be Genesis Buyers off. It also Devalues the Accent. It makes some people think the Nearly $19K Accent SE is going to be as cheap as the Accent Blue, or Accent GS base. What a shame too, as they are missing out all becuase of a silly marketing snaffu.
Chrysler would sell tons more cars with Hyundai Pricing. However, unlike Hyundais Chryslers are actually worth the low prices Hyundais go for.
Im also going by what people say about our small cars; espcially the Kia Rio. The Rio looks too cheap for most people who would consider a small KIA. if they just painted the Bumpers, etc body color the Rio would double its sales.
The Black “Tonka Toy” (Im only repeating what many say about the Rio) garnish on the exterior turns them off to an otherwise great car.

Exactly Alex, there are too many players in the Grocery Getter car game, all:
Ford
Chevy
Honda
Toyota
Dodge
Nissan
We tried to fit in, its just not going to work for us.
We just need to keep the prices relatively low, and provide at least at first, as some Hyundai Haters now call us: “Imitation Luxury Cars.”
Guess What? Acura, Buick, and Mercury are the ones really scared of us (Lexus and Benz just notices barely), thats why they now have drawing plans and prototypes of small and mid sized premium cars, and changing their lineups drastically which humm…. Somehow coincidentally will make them competitive with our Accents, Elantras, and Sonatas. BMW is very concerned about future upmarket Accents eating away at MINI Sales.
Chrysler Execs have many sleepless nights over our cars, trust me.
KIA Should duke it out with Mazda, Scion, Lower BMW Trims, and Subaru. “Certain: Art, Performance, Value, Techonology, fuel efficiency, Science, and Reliability in an Uncertain World” Should be the selling point for our KIA.
KIAOTAs and KIONDAs have not been cutting it. Our Little Brother must be fresh and new.
November 3rd, 2009 at 5:28 am
Why cant KIA be a cheaper Audi, and Hyundai be a Cheaper Benz?
To us Americans Benz has a dirty European secret they wont share unless gas hits $5.00 a gallon. Its called an A Class. Its Accent Sized, and Priced Competitively with our Accent SE. We have competitive fuel eocnomy, and we have more power than they do.
Did you know that Auto Journalists think that our i20 is a better car than a Merc A Class? The Accent will be much better than the i20.
For You Frederic:
Edmunds cross tested a few months ago the SAAB 93 and the Elantra Touring, and guess what?
They think our Elantra Touring is better than the SAAB 93, not a little bit better, but a lot better.
November 3rd, 2009 at 4:47 pm
That is nice HyundaiSmoke suprising but nice. I’m curious to see how they did come to that conclusion the Touring beeting the 9_3.
I was also supprised that you suggested to put a 2.0T in the Elantra… I could not ask for more LOL

I would definately disagree with people responding like what I said up above, but it is still reality for my people age between 35 and 50. Even there are people who say that they will only buy American because they are heavy therefore they are safer than other brands.
What I am talking about is not a logical way of looking at things, I am talking about stereo-type. Maybe in 3~4 years, hyundai can position themselve a bit more upmarket, but definitly not now. They got to make people try their cars by offering them at rather discounted prices and down the road, make those satisfied customer to come and buy bigger car with confidence. The discount they can offer at the moment will be over very quickly once the exchage rate turn against them. I think this is almost the last chance they can make people try their car at current price rates before Chinese flooded the world with cheap cars. Sorry, this reply is jumping all around because I have to go to a meeting in 5 sec. lol
November 4th, 2009 at 6:27 pm
Can u imagine…Hyundai Genesis Coupe with Brembo brakes, possibly a modified catback exhaust and throw a top on it…I will take one for 15k less than a comparably equipped “upcharged” V6 Camaro
November 5th, 2009 at 5:45 am
Dave more Hyundais with chrome like my Accent make people look at our cars. Our Prices have in the past made us seem cheap. Cheap=POS, shit quality, Kimchi Cars, Ching Chong Toy, Ricer, and other derogatory words for it, etc….
That Old Grandpa who had that Chromed-up Azera at the DMV with 22’s and a shiny chrome waterfall grille glistening in the sun on my Birthday had my young ass looking.
Near Luxury is the key word for Hyundai we ofter luxury trims for all of our cars and trucks, near Luxury Trims for all of our cars and Trucks, and 1 Superb Econo Trim.
Dont you get it man, we have to bait the people in with flashy stuff, then if they truly cant afford it, suggest the least expensive trim of that model and note how superb it is even though that trim is sort of and economy trim.

Here in Germany the Car would be much more expensive. I think it will start between 25.000 and 30.000 Euro.
