Hyundai Sonata 2.4L GDI
The 2011 Sonata sedan to be available with Hyundai’s all-new 2.4L Theta II GDI engine.
Earlier this year, we have told you that Hyundai plans to introduce a wide variety of highly advanced engines in the forthcoming Sonata sedan. Dependng on market, the all-new Sonata will be available with modern hi-tech diesel and gasoline engines.
When Sonata made its official debut two weeks ago, Hyundai released official press release that included a very limited info regarding its engine options. The company did announce a 2.0L Theta II gasoline powerplant, which will be standard engine option in the home Korean market, and also provided some detailed numbers for its power and fuel-consumption ratings.
However, the company did not reveal any spec on other engine options, including the 2.4L four-cylinder Theta II engine. Reportedly, a technologically highly advanced 2.4L Theta II unit will be standard engine on all US-spec Sonata models and is rumoured to feature around 200 horsepower.
The 2.4L Theta II GDI engine will be equipped with latest gasoline direct injection technology -GDI, which cuts exhaust emissions and improves efficiency. By injecting the fuel directly inside the cylinder in small, precise amounts, the technology also helps improving the response and performance of the engine.
Hyundai’s state-of-the-art four-cylinder engine also includes Continuously Variable Valve Timing (CVVT) that further improves its efficiency. While there are no information about the fuel efficieny of the powerplant, you can expect the engine to achieve up to 10 percent higher fuel efficiency compared to the existing 2.4L Hyundai unit.
According to latest rumours, this high-tech four-cylinder gasoline engine will be fitted in various new Hyundai and Kia models in the near future. As mentioned before, the very first Hyundai car to be equipped with the all-new 2.4L GDI powerplant will be the 2011 Sonata sedan. Such particular model has already been caught by one of the Hyundai fans in Korea (see the image). Thanks for the pics Kim!

Looks, Power and Efficiency, the Trifecta!

There’s no V6 option for the 2011 Sonata? WTF
October 6th, 2009 at 3:04 pm
My info reports the fuel consumption at 13.3 km/l on the Korean test cycle.
October 6th, 2009 at 5:12 pm
So it’s only going to be available as a CVT?
October 6th, 2009 at 5:59 pm
Give me that engine in the 5-speed Elantra Touring. Now that would be a GTI killer!
October 6th, 2009 at 6:00 pm
I think the Sonata will offer a 5-speed automatic. CVT for the ‘blue’ model is the US gets it.
October 6th, 2009 at 7:11 pm
I agree with Dhalgren!
Elantra Touring 5-speed or even better 6-speed manual with 2.4 GDI… just imagin with a turbo added
I would change for this right away.
My daily driver is a slightly modified “blueish” 2003 Elantra GT hatchback with approx. 175 000 km on it. its still going really great. I’m due and I’m waiting until the right package arrives in showrooms.
I would be interested by futur Hyundai product if:
Tucson 4 cyl. GDI + turbo, 4wd or (2wd & lowered), manual trans.
Sonata 4 cyl. GDI + turbo, manual trans.
Elantra Touring with more than 170 hp, manual trans.
Accent with more than 140 hp, manual trans.
More power with the same format PLEASE

Why do you guys need that much power? 130 HP is enough for a car as small as the Accent, and you guys complain about 140. Just remember only 10 years ago the Accent had 92 HP.
The Accent will get a 176 HP GDI Turbo as well. That’s enough already. Thats about as much power a car that size needs.
If you need that much power in Future Products then get a KIA. That’s why the Sonata V6 is going in the KIA Optima instead. That’s the whole point of the company changing market directions.
Hyundai as an Affordable Eco Luxury Make, and KIA as a Performance make.

Its a great direction for the company, and if you guys dont like then I dont know what to tell you.

You folks are confusing Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT) with Continuously Variable Valve Timing (CVVT). There’s no CVT planned for any Hyundai that I’ve heard of. The Sonata will offer a 6-speed manual and a 6-speed automatic.

Thanks J. Hey, any Accent stuff on there?
SWEET COUPE!!!

One of the reason I need more power is that i have owned 4 cars in my life ( all for more than 4 years), all compacts and i do not want to go bigger. I just want to to keep the format and have more power under the foot. I agree that 110 hp in the accent is enough for a first or second car in a life time as well as 138 is ok for the Elantra but at one point I want to have the choice to have a bigger engine. just like the ones that want a V6 in the Sonata line up… you say that in the past the accent had 92hp… fine, good for them then, now it has 110 hp… probably because the weight of the car has gone heavier (I dont have those numbers) and because people wanted more power. but I have a 2003 Elantra hatch and now the elantra seems bigger to me (is it heavier?) I just want to have the option to choose a bigger engine. More power does not mean sportier all the time…(actual Azera has more power than actual sonata and I think the sonata is sportier…) Now people go smaller in size for many reasons ( money, gas, image, actual needs …) and they just want to have more choice. I want a small car but i do not want to be pushed around by SUV / Sports cars / special edition of this or that without being able to get out of the way fast enough… I drive 80 to 100 km 7/7 and sometime way more for work and other activities, I love to drive and as a consumer I want the choice.
You say Hyundai will do this, Hyundai will do that… Accent with 170 hp is way more than my request… I will be more than happy to see this coming in showroom. I’m just expressing my personal view. As for going for a Kia if I’m not happy… I never said i was not happy, My car is 7 yo and I love it, I have the money to move up or go elsewhere. Subaru and Ford products are very tempting… its a choice. Hyundai has grown on me and I want a Hyundai next. i was not wrong to choose Hyundai in 2003 (believe me it made a commotion when I got it then; being a guy who loves to drive and drives a lot) and I surely wont be wrong to buy another one. People like me proved to septics and snobs that those Hyundai cars are reliable, tough, well built and can be tossed around in any driving condition… by any kind of driver.
If you prefer, I’ll go to Kia, But I like to treat the 2 car company as different companies as they are competing against each others and are manage by different staff and have different views and different objectives. What Kill GM ( one of the hundreds of reasons) is that they were tossing around the consumers destroying them self the tinny bit of loyalty that people had with their poor quality products in the 80s and 90s. Again only expressing my little consumer view. And I choose to do it here more than other places because of the quality and level of the people chatting in these posts when you compare with other enthusiast car sites. I comment because I think that high management do listen and I believe that I’m ahead of the general flow. Presumptuous I know, but its my view… a lot of presumptuous people share their views to make the world a better place and a more fun place to live in/drive in
And again again sorry for English mistakes, It is not my primary language.

If Hyundai is pushing so much on the eco luxury brand, Why is it hammering every nail on its euro roots, sporty handling and performance with the Elantra Touring when its the same engine as other models and why is there a Sport edition on every model trim… 2-3 years ago a High US management said that the Accent would dissapear from showrooms to go in the luxury direction. That was a stupid call and they changed… only the stupid dont change ideas… If Hyundai goes the only Eco and luxury… and Kia goes only sport. it will be bad for both. its a question of a company offering a balance and choice. I’m not saying they need to be everything to anyone.. we know were this leads, I’m just saying that you can have engine options and being eco and luxury and you can have a sporty image with good gas consumption.
When I push my 2003 elantra to the limit i get 10-11L per 100 km witch is bad. when I go and want to save gas it does according to the trip computer inboard 6L per 100 km witch is even better than the numbers it was sold for in 2003… so fuel economy is in every bodies reach its a matter of driving attitude…

Well Fred, why not do niche cars when there are a billion other companies on the market making Econo Boxes? We should be competitive you are right, but shouldnt we have niches that set us apart?
Im quite sure Hyundai gets a lot of emails and letters. Maybe these new directions are what most of the people who wrote the letters wanted?
Maybe the company has decided for Hyundai, that Hyundai must be the first and only decision in terms of Entry level Luxury sales. The Entry Level brands sell enough models combined for it to be a very profitable enterprise from Hyundai to not only take their marketshre, but to provide more for current customers at value prices.
The Sport brands sell enough combined to provide a profitable market for KIA as well. We can take Mazda, Scion, etc… Maretshare, and provide current KIA customers with more, better, and Faster.
Naybe the Company wants to put unreliable, overpriced, and fuel efficient brands out of business as well.
Hyundai Customers want more and better with each generation of cars. Hyundai also wants to kill skeptic opinion as well.
Why not become Toyota, but set a higher bar than they do?
If we are going to have a luxury brand give it much lower prices and superior fuel economny with superior equippment.
If we are going to have an Economy brand why not set the bar higher, and instead of providing Toyotas, we can provide Mazdas with the quality and reliablity you would expect with a Hyundai Product?
Also, maybe some buyers settle becuase the other brands dont give them what they want?
Maybe Hyundai wants to be the Fuel Efficient premium cars the Economists on Bloomberg cry about how the market so lacks.
Maybe Hyundai is plotting for the next Global fuel Crisis to be the Dominant Global sales leader?
We probably wont know what causes the company to make decisions, but I personally think they are on the right path.

I do think Hyundai will have to eventually provide a coupe with supercar performance yet is only $59,000, to finally shut the diehard haters up.
That Eqqus would really look nice with a convertible option, and a Supercharged V8 for an option.

@ J.
Thanks for the link, that Coupe looks hot!!!

Look for the 2.4L GDI to debut earlier in the 2010 Santa Fe in the U.S. as entry level engine with 3.5L as new upgrade engine!

That’s good news, i was waiting for that long time.we can able to save fuel. After all i can say it is ground breaking for Hyundai, which is important for them to continue to grow.

Battery Operated Light can be snappish on to your car sun visor or taken with you when camping, Fishing, Picnics and Biking expeditions.

The rear seats offer decent headroom and adequate legroom, but some adjustability would be welcome. The earlier Tucson’s backseat reclined a few degrees, and the seats in a lot of competitors both recline and move forward and back. These are fixed.

The 2.4L GDI’s engine’s benefits include improved gas mileage and performance. Compared to engine without GDI technology, tjaall-new 2.4L GDI unit achieves 7 percent more torque at low revolutions and 12 percent more torque at the high-end revs.
It also achievs around 10% better gas-mileage than the engine without GDI technology.
