Hyundai ix-Metro hybrid concept car to debut at Frankfurt Auto Show!
Hyundai Motor Company has today announced that it will take the wraps of its latest concept car, called ix-Metro, during the forthcoming Frankfurt Auto Show. According to the company, the ix-Metro crossover is already the fifth in a series of concept cars created by Korean designers and engineers working at Hyundai’s Namyang R&D centre, located in Korea.
Hyundai ix-Metro concept car is a small crossover concept car that belongs to the European sub-B segment. It is smaller in size than Hyundai’s popular i20 hatchback, but larger than i10 mini car. Though not confirmed, it is widely believed that ix-Metro concept car gives us the very first sneak peak preview at an upcoming eco-friendly production Hyundai car that will hit the roads within the next two years to rival European sub-B segment contenders.
Under the hood, the ix-Metro concept car features a technically advanced gasoline-electric hybrid system, which is based on a turbo-charged 1.0L gasoline engine. Hyundai’s newly developed three-cylinder powerplant is equipped with dual CVVT and gasoline direct injection technology and generates 125 horsepower ( impressive amount of power for its size).
Coupled with a six-speed dual clutch automatic transmission, the ix-Metro emits only 80 grams of CO2 per kilometer! This fuel-sipping engine will appear in a facelifted i10 city car (non-hybrid) early next year.
The ix-Metro concept car will be displayed at a special Blue Drive Zone at the Frankfurt Auto Show where Hyundai will exhibit a wide number of latest eco-friendly cars. Put on display alongside the all-new ix-Metro concept car will be Hyundai i30 Blue, Hyundai i10 zero emission electric car, Elantra LPI hybrid and Blue Will plug-in hybrid electric concept vehicle.

I like the back and profile but the front is questionable. Different? Definitely, but a little too sci-fi-y. Cool interior though.

I absolutely LOVE the quirky, daring front facia. It makes me think of the Mazda styling department and that is a huge compliment. I don’t mean it’s a copy of a Mazda, but it has those elements of Mazda’s new concepts that is absolutely breathtaking such as complex form, unconventionality and high-tech look. A really well thought out design and it would be great if they downsized it and made it a Toyota/Scion iQ competitor. Overall a very well thought out design… Very, very excited.

The engine in a down tuned form will be used in the i10. Hopefully the DCT transmission will make to the i10 as well.

I love the side and back however the front reminds me of the Predator (without its mask on) in the 80s Predator film (so the end with my mum the other day on tv while flicking through the movie channels - don’t want to see it again LOL).
Anyway, Hyundai has still been knocking out some great designs lately (i40, ix35) so I still respect ‘em =)

Good grief, as if honda’s second coming off the aztek wasn’t bad enough. I dont think we need a third.

“Put on display alongside the all-new ix-Metro concept car will be Hyundai i30 Blue”
So what are the chances we’ll actually get an i30/touring in the US next year with a new engine?

@ Michael
LOL, I totally agree!

Yuck. Is Hyundai contracting concept vehicle styling out to Pixar?
September 5th, 2009 at 6:27 am
THIS CAR IS SWEET, GUYS!!!!! I love the Sci Fi look of this thing. I hope this styling will end up on Hyundai small cars in the Future. I think its a 2013-2015 car, in which case its so far out that its scary for some people to handle.
September 5th, 2009 at 10:06 am
Don’t like its looks too much, but just love everything what’s been hidden under its hood. Dual clutch tranny and turbo engine with GDI tech! What else do you need in such a small package??

Time goes past so fast: http://www.netcarshow.com/hyundai/2005-hed_1_concept/

You got a Point patrik. Nothing on that HED-1 ever went on any Hyundai small car, unless what they really mean by next generation is 2011-2012. I know some auto studios do throw out small car concepts just to trick people while they are developing the real prototype as well.
September 5th, 2009 at 3:51 pm
The HED-1 could have made an interesting Accent if they changed the interior, the door handles, the front and end completely.
Hold up patrik, Im wrong. After studying this car, The rear end rakish profile ended up on the i20.
September 5th, 2009 at 11:47 pm
About the HED-1 and the i20 — I was about to say the same thing. The downturned character line, the upturned rim at the top of the rear, the downswept curve of the trunk/boot rim, the teardrop rear lights, the alert stance like a small dog. Interesting.
September 6th, 2009 at 1:34 am
Ash maybe this isnt intended for production either, but the rear and middle will go on Accents, etc….
Hyundai is obsessed with suicide rear doors on concept cars, and plans to put them on the Veloster. I think Suicide rear doors on a hatchback are sweet, and that should be a Hyundai styling trademark.

What really matters for us at Hyundai is this one fact: Those who drive MINI Coopers and Clubmans, love them. They are some of the most unreliable rattletraps on Earth but they still love them.
We have to capture that passion in the: Accent, Veloster, Elantra, and other small cars. We have the timeless reliablity down, but if we get that pannache’ that MINI has, the cars will fly out of the dealers.
September 6th, 2009 at 10:50 am
We also have to make sure we dont sacrifice our reliablity to get there, and we might even have to take the risk of having premium prices for some of the higher end small car options.

Well.. You can’t say HMC is copying anyone here.. The basic stance and look is there and would obviously be watered down if they were to make a production model. Overall, I like it and a few styling tweaks could make this a hit.
Agree with admin, the innards are very intriguing..

There will be a debate about the Rear end having similar porportions to a Next Gen Nissan Versa Spyshot. They dont look alike, but the rear end is about the direction Nissan wants to go as well.
September 7th, 2009 at 3:40 am
Hyundia does need to do a grille decison however. Are we going to keep the Tucon Grill for all hatchbacks and CUVs or are we going to have this futuristic klingon grille, or the waterfall grille.
September 8th, 2009 at 10:27 pm
I think this is getting a little odd to mix with the rest of the H fleet. It dosen’t fit. I think this would be a big design leap backwards. Put the new Tucson next to this one the same lot and you will get polarizing reactions. I hope this doen’t come to the states.
September 8th, 2009 at 11:36 pm
EB Of course the Klingon grill wont stay on it.
September 9th, 2009 at 10:52 pm
H.Smoke, maybe, but that seems like just the begining of the design issues here… I actually think the Smart Car looks better. The overall shape and lines are just out of proportion to me.
September 10th, 2009 at 2:53 am
EB probably the suicide doors will stay on. Us in the younger Generation have fallen in love with suicide doors, and Hyundai will put one on the Veloster. The rear end will probably go on a Next Gen i20 or something. The Grilles wont be on any car even a spy shot within the next 5 years. Its way ahead of its time. The rest of the body, probably not.
I actually think Accent should have suicide doors too as standard, as Im a suicide door fan. They probably wouldnt look good on the Elantra though.
September 25th, 2009 at 10:13 pm
Nope. I’m sorry. I saw a cute model standing next to this in a much better shot and this is just a design disaster! Huyndai’s first dud in a long time… just like the Hellion. All I have is just one word to say.. Eeew!

Looking for a small new car
October 6th, 2009 at 2:08 am
Terry,
Get an Accent SE, put leather seats in it, get Rims, and HID lights. Put an Exhaust and Intake on it as well.
Or you can wait for the 2012 Accent which will be on dealer lots in exactly 2 years from now.

When they will stop to make strange cars and start producing
(like, but better-than susuki) 4×4 ,low gear, up to 3.8 m long, up to 2000cc engine, turbo+supercharge (like the VW-TSI engines)
and then they will brake some other auto makers….
