2011 Hyundai Sonata / i40 revealed
The long anticipated 2011 Hyundai Sonata (to be named i40 in Europe) has finally arrived! Ahead of its official Korean unveiling, scheduled for the first week next month, we are bringing you the very first images of a completely undisguised next-generation Sonata sedan. The images preview Sonata’s front, side and rear-end styling, as well as provide us a sneak peak preview of Sonata’s modern cabin lay-out.
As expected, the all-new Sonata is a looker and most definitely the most appealing and attractive vehicle Hyundai has ever built! The all-new four-door sedan embodies Hyundais so-called “fluidic” design language, which has been first introduced with ix-onic concept car in Geneva and later, just a few weeks ago as a matter of fact, with production-ready Tucson crossover.
Although no specific information on engine line-up were released so far, we have learned that a series of modern gasoline and diesel engines will be available in the new Sonata sedan, including the all-new 2.4L four-cylinder with gasoline direct injection -GDI technology and estimated output of 200 horsepower. Another four-cylinder gasoline engine under the hood of Korean-spec 2011 Sonata will be a 2.0L Theta powerplant, which will achieve 12.7 km/L (30 mpg US).
Diesel power, which will be available exclusively for Korean and European markets, and will come from Hyundai’s brand new 2.2L R-diesel engine that churns out impressive 204 horsepower ans satisfies upcoming EURO5 emission standards. According to sources close to Hyundai, 250hp+ Lambda V6 engine will also be offered, but most likely only in the US market.
All Sonatas, powered by gasoline or diesel engines, will be available either with 6-speed automatic or manual transmissions. As is typical in the mid-size cars, Sonata will offer such luxuries as a panoramic glassroof, reversing cameras, engine start-stop button, smart navigation system and paddle shift gearbox.
The official 2011 Hyundai Sonata unveiling is scheduled for September 10th, with Korean sales beginning in October, while US and European sales is expected to commence in the first half of 2010. Thanks for sending us the pics Kim!

GOSH AWESOME, JUST AWESOME!

This is beautiful. But this this is the first Hyundai that I can honstly say I like looking at the back more so than the front. That grille is HUGE! ..Even with the fisheye camera lense here! This car would be perfect if the was a size smaller, but the rest of the car is beautiful! Nice work Hyundai…. waiting for the Portico.

amazing. looking forward to seeing one in the metal. can’t quite decide what I think of that second, lower character line. liking the bold sweeping style though. a bit like a jag, is the best I can do. but really it doesn’t look much like anything else. bravo

BEST HYUNDAI LOOKING SEDAN! This is a home run for Hyundai, inside/out……hints of VW CC but overall very original. I see the Sonata has paddle shifter, should be interesting

Wow I’m in love with the back end. The side line looks a little too sharp but I’m guessing its because of the shadow cast from the top only lighting. I also like the digitally displayed analogue temp and fuel gauge as well. Very impressed overall.

WOW! I can honestly say this looks fantastic. Love the rear end, love the interior, love the paddle shifters (which is a segment first i think). Hyundai has definitely lived up to a the spy shot made hype. EB I agree the grill is alot bigger then i thought it would be. But overall hyundai has hit a homerun. Keep up the good work Hyundai

That John Krafcik is proiving to be a stand up guy. He said that Hyundai gauge clusters would be screens as opposed to the needles, he’s right: Just look at the gauge cluster, and you will see the obvious absence of needles. GO, HYUNDAI!!!!!

the day time running lights that surrounds the headlight lamp also looks cool - very unusual shape
September 1st, 2009 at 2:33 am
It looks like the speedo and tach have needles to me. Looks like they’re covering the blue surround lighting. The temp and fuel obviously don’t. Sure like the way they’ve managed to get most everything you need to be paying attention to into such a small, centralized space.

It Could Be Derrick, but we can tell up person though.

alcyone,
I don’t think that’s DRL. They aren’t used in Korea and I’m assuming this is a KDM-spec model. Looks more like to me either the parking lights or more likely the hazard flasher are/is on and you’re seeing that light reflected in all the chrome that surrounds the projector-style low-beam. Another possibility is part is reflected light from the front turn-signals higher up and the lower part is from a seperate park/side marker light like the current NFA has.

I concur with all the strongly positive comments of eye envying the breathing, breakthrough design that represents Hyundai’s double play home runs, the redesigned Tucson and now, here revealed, the upcoming redesigned,Accord/Camry killer, the svelte, 2011 Hyundai Sonata.
This has got to be one of the most stunning designs since tail fins of the ’50s. Compare this car in the segment that it will be competing in and you will find there is nothing, nothing in this segment that looks more upscale, more sophisticated and more future-now than the Sonata. I hope they name this Sonata iX.
Totally awesome! Totally Hyundastic!

How do you say awesome in Korean? All hail John Krafcik.
September 1st, 2009 at 7:36 am
Impressive. Should sell exceptionally well. What should really give it the edge this time is the phenominal interior. Should be a VERY COMFORTABLE place to make a road trip - hope the fuel efficiency numbers stack up well next to Camry and Accord.
Surprisingly, the profile angle makes the trunk look almost a bit too short so have to see more pictures. That gague cluster is effin sweet~

This is fucking awesome!!! Really really imba good looking sedan, great job hyundai!!!

I live in Korea and the buzz here has been positive. The current Sonata lists for between 15,000 and 25,000 USD here and people say that the new one will be between 500 and 2,000 dollars more expensive.
Will post more when more is available here in Korea

In the picture of the front end anybody notice the large gap between the hood and the grill? It almost looks like the hood has been popped open. Is that normal?
September 1st, 2009 at 2:28 pm
WOW! I was looking and waiting for this car for like, months!! This is a amazing thing fo Hyundai!! I mean, the Genesis, the Genesis coup, everything! Wow! I am amazingly stunned!! Think about all the reviews it would get from like MotorTrend, or Cnet!!!! I am SHOCKED!! I can’t say enough!!! HOME RUN!!!
September 1st, 2009 at 2:46 pm
Looks sexy. Hope they got the suspension right this time (for US roads).
September 1st, 2009 at 5:48 pm
I see Flappy Paddles…Whoo Hooo…Hopefully the engine choices availible are such that their existance on this car are relevant!!!
September 2nd, 2009 at 11:59 pm
My only request is that the luxury level approaches that of the Genesis sedan. There’s too big a difference between the two as of the current models. The Sonata’s size is better for me (and for gas mileage) than the larger Genesis. I like the Coupe, but the back seats and trunk are too small. If the top model is in the $25-$30K range, this will be a huge hit.

Chark, I think you will most likely get your wish buddy.
September 7th, 2009 at 1:44 am
Gas Mileage would be aprx 31 MPG in Korean spec for 2L 4cyl
models while it was around 28 in the 2009 model
September 7th, 2009 at 3:03 am
Well that means that in US Mileage it would be in the 35 MPG ballpark. The same engine is 32 MPG in the US. The Predictions for the Sonata has been 34-37 MPG.

Wow, this car really looks amazing! I was planning to consider Hyundai when it’s time to replace my Accord, but it looks like I’ll be doing more than just considering it. This car is beautiful! I’ll be even more impressed if the four-cylinder gets the kind of mileage mentioned here.
Honda and Toyota: your new worst nightmare has arrived. Most modern Hondas and Toyotas are overpriced and underwhelming; Hyundai seems poised to do to them what they did to the Detroit Three.

This is an amazing car… it’s too bad that Hyundai Execs totally dropped the ball by only bringing the V6 version into Canada.
This is THE car. It has all the potential to win car of the year, and change the face of the automotive market. But with no V6 in Canada, how do they expect to compete with the Accord, Camry, Maxima, and C-Class with no available V6. Whoever made this decision should be fired or removed from the board. A totally irresponsible and boneheaded decision.
