Officially official: Next Hyundai Tucson
The long-anticipated second generation Hyundai Tucson makes its official debut.
Hyundai has unveiled its all-new Tucson crossover in Korea today. The automaker held a press conference where it has shown the production model in flesh, for the first time.
The 2011 Hyundai Tucson features a completely different exterior styling that the out-going model. It incorporates Hyundai’s new design language and carries over much of the confident, sweeping styling of the very attractive ix-onic concept car that made its official debut at Geneva Auto Show earlier this year.
In addition to its new premium exterior look, the all-new Hyundai Tucson also comes available with some new features, such as panoramic glass-roof, hill-start assist control, downhil brake control (DBC), vehicle dynamic control (VDC) that improves the safety of a vehicle stability by detecting and minimizing skids, rear-view camera and others.
According to Hyundai, the new Tucson’s safety features are sufficient to receive five star ratings in both, European and U.S. new car assessment programs. The car will be available with driver and passenger airbags as well as side and curtain airbags. In addition, 68.9 percent of the vehicle has been built with high strength steel for increased structural integrity.
Under the hood, Hyundai Tucson will at first have a choce of one gasoline and one diesel engine, but latest rumors indicate that Hyundai will also introduce a turbocharged Tucson, equipped with 1.6L gasoline engine and 175 horsepower.
At the beginning, Hyundai will offer the 2011 Tucson with either a 2.0L Theta II gasoline engine (166 horsepower) and 2.0L R-diesel engine, with maximum output of 184 horsepower. The 2.0L diesel engine achieves fuel economy of 15.4 km/L, while gasoline engine achieves 11.7 km/L of fuel. Engines are coupled with Hyundai‘s all-new 6-speed automatic transmission. Both front-wheel and all-wheel drive options are available on the diesel.
With sales of more than 1 million units worldwide since its launch back in 2004, the Tucson has been one of the most successful Hyundai models ever and with the new Tucson, Hyundai aims to repeat the success of its predecessor.
According to Hyundai, the company plans to sell 16.000 units of new Tucson in Korea this year and 40.000 next year. When the new Tucson goes on sale overseas, Hyundai predicts it can sell additional 260.000 units, for a total of 300.000 units each year.
Hyundai will continue to build the Tucson at existing locations. European Tucsons will be built in Europe, while Korean and US-market will come from Korean manufacturing plants.
According to Hyundai, retail prices for the 2WD tucson fitted with 2.0L diesel engine and automatic transmission will begin at 21 million won and will be topping at 27 million won for the top of the line model. Gasoline powered Korean-spec Hyundai Tucson will start at about 19 million won and will top out at 24 million won.
At the end of our brief presentation, we should also mention that Hyundai has also announced it will bring the 2011 Tucson to the L.A. Auto Show for the US premiere. Sales is expected to begin early in 2010.

Nice, in this photo the lights follow i20 and i30 hatch style, but the fog lights looked different in other pictures, btw I’m loving this front more.

OK, if this is going to be a 2011 in N. Amer., what do we get in the interim? Nothing?

Derrick its going to be one of those 2011 cars sold in February of 2010, when 2011 is actually 11 months away. You know how they do it now. The Automakers are placating into the instant gratification culture.
Preety much, most of the 2010 Hyundai lineup will be 2009 cars with 2010 stickers sold alongside the 2011s. I think Hyundai might be trying that sell the old model to reel the miser customers in, while selling new improved tech and features. Its a way to keep the value image while selling the new upmarket stuff on the side.
They do it in every market outside of the West, why not try it in the West?

The Tucson could have used a little more chrome.

Its good that they put an engine cover on it, ebcuase a lot of Hyundais stuff coming out lately have been absent engine covers. This CUV looks very boring in gray. The design calls for a more racy color to have it displayed in. If you want a timeless color that is very light, they should have displayed in in ix-onic (ice) blue.
As a matter of fact Instead of ice blue, Hyundai should call it ixonic blue to get people to think its some exotic color.

I personally hoped that they’d keep the chrome on the side skirt like the concept but other than that the car looks gorgeous. I’m looking forward to the commercials, but in the meantime, I managed to find a minute and a half promo video in Korean on youtube. There is a weird shape on the bar in the middle of the grill, but it might be because this is the Korean spec since the official rendering for the US market does not have it. I also am a big fan of the interior. You can really see that they kept true to the concept. Here it is: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TDf6UOcPuVE

In a word… Wow.

This is very pretty. Hyundai has adapted its current design language to the Tucson beautifully. While I am reminded of the Ford Kuga, I’m above all reminded of the current Avante (through the glasshouse) and i30 models.

The shape and spec is nice, the grille is overdone, almost ugly. In my opinion the grill is the vehicle’s weak spot: it looks like it was almost an afterthought, like they tried to make it look like a trapezoid but it did not quite work out. alcyone points this out. Unfortunately this does show in other spy shots so it may be a global thing. It will probably sell ok but it makes the thing look a bit clunky, tacky – and in my mind ugly. It does look a bit better than what they are planning to do to the 2010 Santa Fe though – Front or back. while Hyundai is coming out with great new cars and overall styling is improving by leaps and bounds, the new faces leave a bit to be desired, methinks.

Wow that looks much better than I expected, and brings about a sigh of relief after seeing the spy pics from Sydney. In those photos the front bumper design looked awkward but this (possibly optional) bumper seems to have resolved that nicely. Interior from the vid looks great too!

It looks great but with 166hp I’m not expecting much more in terms of driving fun then the pathetic Honda CRV.

Here is a link to pics that show both the interior and exterior. All I can say is wow! this really pushes the 2010 Tucson way past the CR-V in terms of style, design, content and engine/powertrain. Enjoy!

@The Phill
Thanks for the post. In the latest post i had said that the interior would have to grown on me, but after seeing choice of light colour, and single tone interior, I really like it.

When will I be able to purchase this 2011 Tucson? Every dealer I talk to knows nothing about all of this. They all say the 2010 is the 2011 they are talking about but there is no diesel so this cannot be the one. Does anyone know where I can get some info on this? Is there an office here in the United States that I can contact? I will wait for this one if it is going to come out this year.

I just recently bought the new Tucson and it’s amazing. So much fun to drive and with all the bells and whistles without the over inflated price to match.
