New Hyundai Sonata sedan fully undisguised
These are the very first images of a completely undisguised new Hyundai Sonata sedan.
New Hyundai Sonata is scheduled to be officially unveiled in the South Korean market on September 10th and will replace the existing Sonata model, which has been on sale since 2004.
Codenamed YF, the all-new Hyundai Sonata will incorporate sleek exterior styling with a wide three-bar radiator grille up-front and sharp-edged tail-lamps at rear. Under the hood, new Hyundai Sonata will feature modern diesel and gasoline engines.
Available as an entry level choice in new Hyundai Sonata will be a 166-hp 2.0L Theta II gasoline engine, mated to a 6-speed automatic transmission. More powerful 2.4L engine with 200 horsepower will be offered in Korean market as well, while US-market Sonatas are also expected to get a 3.5L V6 with estimated power output of 275 horsepower.
Diesel power will be available only in European and South Korean markets and will come from the all-new 2.0L and 2.2L R-diesel engines with 184 and 200 horsepower respectively.
New Hyundai Sonata will have a wide range of standard equipment, including a push-button start, Vehicle Dynamic Control, panormaic sunroof, paddle-shifters, Bluetooth connectivity and others.

Does this have what it takes to become a segment leader?
August 21st, 2009 at 6:59 pm
The black car is different…look at the lights…the hybrid version maybe?
August 21st, 2009 at 8:54 pm
GREAT, AMAZING!
August 21st, 2009 at 9:34 pm
I think this is a great design, especially the front end of new Sonata. We should wait for a few more shots to judge its overall design, but so far, it looks very promising!
August 21st, 2009 at 10:35 pm
I don’t see any difference in the lights. Just that the dark car’s photo isn’t as clear. And the cut-away car’s hood seems to be popped.
August 21st, 2009 at 10:38 pm
Very very very cool both interior and exterior, GREAT JOB HYUNDAI!!!

Anyone notice those sweet built in exhausts.
August 21st, 2009 at 11:06 pm
Very Nice, but the grill looks a bit heavy (similar to the Genesis Sedan concept)

Just to let you guys know that the picture with yellow thing on top of the roof is a taxi version. In Korea, taxis are using LPG. Although Hyundai has LPG hybrid technology, I doubt this Sonata has that kind of system because that would cost too much.
August 22nd, 2009 at 12:56 am
Anybody make a guess and the length of this vehicle? Has it been Suoersized or will it come in at about 180-185 inches?
August 22nd, 2009 at 1:29 am
I have to admit when I discovered that nude pics of the soon-to-be released 2011 Hyundai Sonata had hit the web, I almost tripped over my mouse at work trying to get to Hyundai-blog to see them.
My very first impression was “wow” this is a grand slam, with all the bases loaded, nobody out, and batters on deck(Tucson) to complete the sweep! Then I tuned in over at the autoblog and the praise for the Sonata was overwhelmingly out and out positive beyond the metal. Even several commented how much they like the placement of the brightwork!
From tip to tail, this is one svelte looking, sick, sleekly styled 4 door coupe-of-kick-ass. I have to say that I am Rougarou impressed! And we’re not even looking at the full car to boot, just the cut-aways!
This tells me Hyundai has brought their A+game and by the looks of it, they’ve succeeded in pushing the Sonata up what? 2 ladders above both the Accord and Camry in both the looks and style department. The only open question left to be answered after the vehicle makes its official debut is whether they’ve sweetened the suspension in synchronous harmony.
Because if they can get that in perfect balance to match this killer look? Whoa, look out people! Both Toyota and Honda are going to have indigestion and the runs all at the same time.

The Accent (Verna) has barely adeqaute fuel storage capacity for our wide open American Interstates. Its a great car that can even be so much better. Its brilliant, but it could be outstanding.

They nailed it! They absolutely nailed it!!! Awesome job and MOST IMPRESSED!
August 22nd, 2009 at 3:52 pm
I am the last person I thought would ever say this – but I can honestly say it looks as if I would probably take this over a Lexus ES330! (Obviously I am not a brand snob..)
The interior is simply amazing and I think the exterior will match. Without question the interior trumps the Camry.. First the Genesis Sedan, then the Coupe and now this.. Hyundai has made it to the big leagues – no question..
August 22nd, 2009 at 5:19 pm
Ok. First impression: Grille looks absolutely fabulous. I love the crease that starts within the grille and flows over onto the bonnet. I really hope that is a satin silver finish, not chrome as that may be overwhelming for many.
Headlight design looks slightly awkward but the swooping lines on both the inside and out add a nice touch and make them somewhat nice to look at.
Rear is a standout for me. A similar shape is translated from the headlight to the taillight and the hint of a duck-tail spoiler/lip spoiler on the trunk lid adds to the coupe inspired theme. The short trunk lid is also nicely executed. Only criticism is that I would have made the exhaust pipe exposed.
The interior’s quality and stylistic forte is pretty much in line with what we’ve come to expect from the Sonata and this is no doubt one of the best interiors in this segment. Far more elegant than the Camry for sure.
And no, Hyundai, the taxi look doesn’t look good.
August 22nd, 2009 at 9:37 pm
Hyundai keep up your plans. Dont even release an Azera, just have ultra premium editions of this and the Portico (Sonata Wagon), maybe one with a 300 HP powertrain as well. Have an AWD option in the Sonata Sedan like you guys are going to put in the Portico. Set MSRP from $19,000 for the base trim to $29,000 for a Fully Loaded Portico. That way you’ll be able to cover many Niches.

If I was Hyundai Id get rid of the Veracruz, and upmarket the Santa Fe. The Santa Fe cant Grow without stepping the the Vercruz’s Toes.

Stunning. Great job Hyundai. This one is a mega hit.
August 22nd, 2009 at 11:06 pm
@HyundaiSmoke
Why not just make the veracruz bigger, allowing to increase the size of santa fe aswell.
August 23rd, 2009 at 12:20 am
Well the Veracruz only sells 700 a month compared to the Santa Fe selling about 2500 a month. The Entourage at the begining of its down swing sold 1600 a month, causing Hyundai to cancel it.
John, Im not talking about size, Im talking about an upmarket move for equippment. The Veracruz should be on the Genesis/Eqqus Platforms if Hyundai were to keep it. Plus, the Veracruz cant move any futrher upmarket unless it becomes a de-facto Genesis SUV. Get rid of the Name Veracruz, and Just call it Genesis Truck and put an RWD option to bring the cost down.
The Portico Should take the Veracruz’s Spot as a Sonata Option. The Santa Fe should have trims slotting Below the Price of the Portico, and Above the price of the Portico
See, Im thinking about CAFE and with the Edition of the Portico Hyundai would have too many SUVs. Hyundai has to bring in a 2-3 more Accent sized cars in Addition to the Accent for a balance (In which they are going to).
The Santa Fe should have a DI-4 and a V8, have the Sonata V6 as an option.
I personally think Hyundai would be better served with an Accent Crossover in the vain of a KIA Venga/Hyundai i25 or a Suzuki SX-4. An Elantra wagon (That Elantra Touring is becoming a very strong seller), a Portico, a Genesis Truck, a Santa Fe, and a Tuscon
The Strategy I propose:
Accent Touring Crossover (With the MPG of a regular Next Gen Accent)
Elantra Touring
Tucson
Santa Fe
Portico (Should be called Sonata Touring as I think that would sell more)
Genesis Truck
August 23rd, 2009 at 12:26 am
Hell the Portico will even have the same grille as the Sonata, they can sell a lot more of them by just calling it the Sonata Touring.

Can’t wait for the Sonata Touring to come out Hyundai is really moving on up in the world and especially in America. And they don’t have the historical WWII animosity and political baggage holding them back that’s associated with the Japanese car companies (Ask any older Chinese or Korean person what this is or google “Japanese war crimes”).
August 24th, 2009 at 1:59 am
John,
No, they’re not dropping the Santa Fe. There in fact was a press release up about a week ago, but they quickly took it down. It listed a 179HP non-GDI 2.4L Theta II 4 and a 276HP Lambda II 3.5L V6 that it described as DOHC, not QOHC as Kia had been saying. Both had 6-sp. autos and the 4 also offered a 6-sp. manual. Don’t remember what the EPA estimates were, but I compared them to Pilot and Highlander and both engines did better than their competition. Not sure why they took it down; perhaps some of the info was wrong? I imagine they’ll wait now until the official release at the Franfurt show in mid-Sept.
August 24th, 2009 at 4:58 am
The Snata Fe is too much of a strong seller to get rid of it.
August 24th, 2009 at 7:20 am
Even more interesting, however, is an amateur computer rendering by a Korean car mania below. He drew the picture based on some news photos of camouflaged Sonata test cars spotted in Seoul and Dubai.
If a twenty-something auto mania with no official education in car design can predict a new car design from some camouflaged test cars with this level of accuracy, what good is all those elaborate cover-ups?

Although I think the grille is a bit overpowering, This is a beautiful car. An finally, Hyundai has figured out how to put a descent rear end on a car. Something it seams the rescent cars designers could not do. this car is beautiful… I reminds me of a Mazda 6 with the oversized grille! ..But it is so much more exciting than the ’09, ’10 model. Congratulations, ahead of time, Hyundai on a possible second American award-winning car!
August 25th, 2009 at 1:27 am
Great point EB.. A really good chance to take North American car of the year again..
August 25th, 2009 at 4:02 am
I realize a lot of cabbies in Korea drive Sonatas (and Toscas), but does the spy shot of the taxi version mean Hyundai evaluates its designs on the basis of (inter alia) how good its cars look as cabs?
Seriously though, I think the YF Sonata looks pretty good. NF was already a likeable design, and this one takes some of those themes forward.
August 25th, 2009 at 8:46 am
@ Jack
I would assume it is pretty safe to think that the first thing designers are told is NOT to design a good looking taxi.. (I’m being facetious). Could me many different reasons for that Taxi light on the roof..
Agree that the YF Sonata was not a bad looking vehicle and evolves nicely here..

I don’t know, this is certainly better than the previous Sonata and I’m really loving the rear cause it’s just awesome, but I don’t get the front of this i40/Sonata, I mean they we’re doing a good job with the family design, especially the same grill of i10, i20, i30/i30 CW. And now they’re just screwing that design up a little bit, in my opinion they should put that grill on this and on the ix35 aka Tucson. BTW Hyundai is doing a really good job so keep it going! =)
August 26th, 2009 at 6:20 pm
[...] Here is the latest set of spy shots of the Hyundai Sonata which reveals a lot about the interior of the car. Incidentally the spy shots were clicked when Hyundai was doing its own photoshoot for the promotional materials. Apparently the secret for well-lit interior shots has been revealed and that requires the roof to be taken off. Visibly enough, the cabin is more elegant and refined. A close proximity with the styling of the big and luxurious German brands can also be established especially if you look at the rear trunk and tail lights. A Sonata Hybrid is also in the wings which will be powered by Hybrid Blue Drive Architecture introduced by Hyundai last year. [via hyundai-blog.com] [...]

I think the Grille is fine. Its not overpowering, it brings out a look that demands the passion of power, just what Hyundai needs,

Great looks front, back, interior. Just one question, why so bubbly looking? We own an 2006 and love it for our child with the extra space. Guess we’ll have to wait and see the space inside, front and back seat. Otherwise great job HYUNDAI. We’ll be in the market next summer and as long as space is not an issue, we’ll be driving one!!!

nice.
Sonata is fully renovated to make it more spacious than its previous model. It now comes with a new four-cylinder direct injection diesel mated to a six-speed automatic but no V6 option available. Comfort, value and numerous features makes Sonata apart from its competitor. A midsize front wheel drive sedan is now increases its popularity for its advance features and outstanding warranty coverage
