Shapping up: 2010 Hyundai Tucson
A heavily camouflaged prototype of the 2010 Hyundai Tucson has been spied at the very famous test-track, called the “Ring” in Germany, where Hyundai has been testing the handling behaviour of its forthcoming compact crossover.
Set to be officially unveiled at the 2009 Frankfurt Motor Show in September, the 2010 Hyundai Tucson will sport a bit less radical exterior design than this year’s Geneva show ix-onic concept model. Inside, the new Tucson will boast a more upscale cabin design and more space for the driver and occupants.
The all-new 2010 Hyundai Tucson will share its core parts, such as uni-body platform, engines and transmissions with next Kia Sportage crossover. With fuel-economy more important than ever, Hyundai will offer the Tucson with various four-cylinder diesel and gasoline engines. The engine-range will include the latest high-tech 2.0L R-diesel and a 1.6L gasoline GDI (gasoline direct injection) engines.
For the European market, Hyundai Tucson will be renamed to Hyundai iX35. The new Tucson is expected to go on sale in Europe at the end of the year, while sales in North America are expected to commence in the first half of the 2010.
Update: Hyundai announced it will replace the existing 2.7L V6 engine in the current Tucson with a 2.4L four-cylinder engine, developed in conjunction with Kia Motors. The engine produces similar power and torque ratings as Hyundai’s old V6 unit, but improves fuel efficiency ratings of new Hyundai Tucson by more than 12 percent! [photosource: bobaedream]

I’m concerned that this will end up being a disappointment compared to the concept.

So glad that Hyundai is testing their cars at the “ring”

Vumiko, I’m thinking the exact same thing…plus if it has the new grill hyundai has recently started using…hyundai cud be in some trouble

In what way, Vumiko? Of course it is going to be toned down compared to the ix-onic.
Anyways, looks like both Hyundai and Kia are busy at the Nordschleife with their upcoming products! This should improve both reliability and drivability immensely.

These spy shots just show an uninspiring vehicle to me. Of course I hope I’m wrong as I want the best for Hyundai, but these spy pics don’t scream “dynamic vehicle” to me like the YF shots do.

Vumiko, your probably feeling that because we’ve seen way to many spy shots of the new tuscon, and are yet to even get a proper glimpse of what the production ready tuscon will look like.

Vumiko: For me the basic shape of an SUV are all the same. The camo is still on so it kind of looks like any other SUV on the market to me. Hopefuly there will be a lot of fun details once the veil comes off.

I hope so too Alcyone.

I think the announcement of the new Tucson took very long time. This indicates that the new Tucson had undergone many of tests. This strengthens the quality and reliability of the new Tucson.
I am waiting to replace my Tucson 2006 by Tucson 2010 .

Smoke… nice article. I can’t wait till they start to sell it here. The local Hyundai dealer has already started a remodel to accomodate the upper scale cars. We will see what the outciome is. Can Hyundai really “sell” a $55,000 car(Equus)? Will the sales teams know how to deal with previous Lexus, BMW, Mercedes, and Audi owners? Do they REALLY know how to talk to a person who has owned an A8 or a S550? That is the true test of the company.. Can they really take the economy out of the dealers? Will their service change? If they want to sell this car, it MUST or it WILL fail for sure! Again, we will see. If they do, they will be the first to ever do so under a single brand name.

…I think the Tuscon is a step in the right direction. If they do it right. Like I said before, an Accent for baby sis, an Elantra Touring for bro, a Sonata for mom, a Genesis for dad and an Equus for Grandpa the exec. …that should be the strategy.

Well EB, the Phaeton sells enough copies, and has enough of a cult following that VW has decided to take all of its cars upmarket as well. To most of the established Luxury buyers they say “Phaeton, yuck.” However, VW had found a new niche amongsts some of its buyers, causing enough demand for VW to make a Next-Gen Phaeton coming out in 2011. They might even sell SEATs in America as a response to our KIA.
I think with the right technology package, Hyundai can do better than the Phaeton, despite the Phaetons ever improving build quality.
Even the Polos, Golfs, and Jettas have an upmarket feel now, their build quality will have to be seen long term. Hyundai can do that or even better to the Accent, and Elantra for less.

H.Smoke, …Well the VW has been around a long time and they have Audi to help back them (like Toyota/ Lexus). Yes those cars have gone upscale lately… with companies like Hyundai aroungd they had too. The Germans are determined to never be “outbuilt” in the automotive industry… Just take a visit to the BMW museum in Munich Germany and you will understand where they are coming from… after you leave the place you will be convinced that they make a superior car. Which was scary actually… before I walked in the place, I didn’t care for the car… Hyundai needs to have the same attitude.
July 24th, 2009 at 5:50 am
Exactly EB. I actually think that Hyundai-KIA are a little ashamed of being Korean. They have to convince us Americans that “Hey our cars are good not just becuase they are reliable, but becuase they are Korean, and our Korean cars are made with love and superior craftsmanship.”
Its the truth, they just need to translate that into marketing.

Hey interesting post.
Conerning the Volkswagen Phaeton, can you believe it’s nothing more then a reskinned Bentley Continental GT? Sad, but true.
The Volkswagen Phaeton was a unimaginable disaster in my opinion!
Its In: VW Phaeton is a failure!
