Hyundai Sonata interior spy shot
The interior of the all-new Sonata has been kept under wraps until a few months ago, when we brought to you the very first interior spy shot, that revealed the 2010 Sonata will feature a very modern interior lay-out. After giving you one of the best interior shots so far, we’ve now gotten our hands on another sweet spy shot of the Sonata interior.
The interior lay-out of new Sonata seems to follow general trends that Hyundai has exhibited in some of its latest concept cars, and shares many similarities with the all-new Hyundai Genesis Coupe.
What we can see from our latest spy image is the two-tone center console that features a large LCD display a top of it and a plethora of audio and climate buttons positioned below. The interior might look a bit plain, but this is due to the fact that this is a pre-production model with low-quality materials applied. When the new Sonata goes on sale, it will feature a higher grade interior materials comparable to those found on latest Volkswagen Passat CC and Audi A4.
Scheduled to hit Hyundai dealerships in South Korea in September, the 2010 Hyundai Sonata is intended to do the battle with competitors such as Honda Accord, Toyota Camry and VW Passat.
UPDATE: New Hyundai Sonata made its official debut during the first day of the L.A. Auto Show and is scheduled to go on sale in the first quarter of 2010. It will be available with a wide range of four-cylinder engine that also includes an all-new 2.4L GDI engine, which features gasoline direct injection technology. The 2.4L GDI engine produces 200 horsepower.

Man, Im sick of spy shots of this car…take of the wraps and just show it to us already…interior looks alright…wonder what it will look like fully finished with higher grade materials
June 26th, 2009 at 6:08 pm
Agree on that!

Has an equus look to it

Sonata Debut=LA Auto Show. Its coming soon guys dont worry. Anyway, come on Hyundai crank out some spy shots of the Accent, Elantra, etc… guys.
Is it just me or is Hyundai going to end up with 2 distintcive design classes?
1. The Nuvis/Sonata/Genesis grille design for the big cars and SUVs.
2. The Veloster/Next Gen Tuscon/Green Baby Grille for the smaller cars and CUVs.

First and foremost Hyundai needs to leak a bit more than what we have been seeing. More “rough” interior pics are a must if they want to keep the momentum(or is it excitement)going for the launch of this well anticipated 4 door upmarket coupe.
Hyundai are you listening? Stop the TEASING!!!!

If you see properly, this is a manual. The previous spyshot (http://www.hyundai-blog.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/04/2010sonatainterior1.jpg) was an automatic. Though the automatic doesnt come with a screen (preferably for GPS), it somehow looks nicer, don’t you think so?
June 27th, 2009 at 7:18 am
I like the interior design a lot and I’m glad they decided to offer manual as well… not many sedans come in manual flavor anymore~

That Interior is Beautiful. Hits them where the bread and butter are at with: Cadillac, Buick, and Lincoln Models.
What do you think guys?
June 27th, 2009 at 9:55 am
When does Hyundai Sonata 2010 introduced or Face Lift?!
June 27th, 2009 at 3:42 pm
real great look at it OH LOOOOOOOOOL
June 27th, 2009 at 10:57 pm
I wonder..will the next gen genesis end up with a equus looking interior too…the sonata has it…maybe the next gen azera if there is one will have it too
June 27th, 2009 at 11:21 pm
John you see that, it has an Equus Interior with Genesis Coupe Gauges. Ii seems like those Genesis Coupe Gauges are going to eventually end up on most if not all models. I hope that nice ambient blue trip computer in the Genesis Coupe, Next Gen Tuscon, and Next Gen Sonata end up in all models as well.

This is seriously HOT.. Could give the Camry/Accord a run for its money this time with a vehicle that has the ride qualities of the Camry, a little sporty flair of the Accord and a design that looks to be fresh and clean..
Interior volume should be healthy too.. Next up will be the Accent re-design and Hyundai will have a pretty awesome portfolio of vehicles.. Really exciting stuff going on here..
June 28th, 2009 at 5:01 am
For me, the dealbreaker has always been the interior. Naturally fit and finish of utmost importance but for me, even something as trivial as the steering wheel can make the difference. HMC cars have really improved with quality over the years but the designs are finally starting to be less derivative and much more original now.
This is going to be a well balanced interior and one that will be a pleasant place to spend long road trips..
June 28th, 2009 at 5:02 am
Excuse me, I meant the Elantra/Avante re-design 2 posts above - great car but style-wise, looking for something new and in-line with the new design language..

Guys do you know what we have here? I have been comparing Hyundai and Lexus Products. I have deduced that the American Luxury Products (Lincoln, Mercury, Chrysler) are in big trouble and Hyundai is a true Lexus Competitor on value price, fuel economy, and performance. These are the reasons why:
1. Azera is catching up to the Lexus ES. One Engine upgrade and it can be ahead of the ES. For $10,000 less, Hummm…..
2. The Genesis Sedan outperforms the Lexus LS that costs $40,000 more in almost every category. Only the LS 460 has superior performance, but in these times fuel economy matters, and even the Genesis V8 has superior Fuel Economy.
3. The Next Gen Sonata has superior Specs and Fuel Economy than an ES. Look at the Lexus Website and then look at what Hyundai has been saying the specs for the Next Gen Sonata are. The Next Gen Sonata will have a V6 like the ES yet get 6 more horsepower, and 6 more MPG. The 4 banger will be rated at about 35-37 mpg, and Lexus doenst even sell a 4 Banger ES. The Sonata of course will cost $16-$17 to get in a base model, and go as high as $28 most likely.
4. Lexus has abandoned small cars and hatches in favor of big baby boomer sedans. While Hyundai is determined on making the small cars as good as a Genesis.
We have to stop seeing ourselves in the same vain as Toyota and Honda, guys. Our quality is better, we provide Luxury performance and Fit and Finish for the same price as a Honda or Toyota, yet provide the utmost superior value to the established Luxury makes. Remember, John Krafick has stated on many occasions he wants to Democratize Luxury. Why not, guys???
June 29th, 2009 at 12:08 am
I will bet good money that it will only take 10 years tops for Hyundai get get to where it took Lexus 20 years to get to. Most of where Hyundai lacks is, the current (Not Soon though) inavailablity of AWD systems. (Note: AWD will be tried out in KIA vehicles first to work out the Kinks. They have a small car and big car AWD system. The Soul and Amanti will get variants soon.) Also Interior Materials, Hyundai has caught up in the Genesis Products, and you will see these materials soon enough in all cars including the Accent.
Remember, Hyundai has been quietly trying to make Luxury cars for 10 years now. XG 300, XG 350, Last Gen Sonata, Azera. Plus, there is the KIA Amanti. The KIA Amanti was a Material Testing platform. Without the Amanti the Genesis or the Azera wouldnt be half as good.
June 29th, 2009 at 12:11 am
The Genesis was just Hyundais Announcement, “Hey we can and are going to make Luxury cars, and we will be here to stay doing it too.”
The Lexus Products do not give value conscious buyers like myself a good arguement to buy besides, “Oh its a Lexus.” You get Nearly ES, GS, and LS performance and Fit and Finish for the same price as Grandaddy’s Accords, Camrys, Impalas, and Tauruses. You cant beat that, guys!!!!
June 29th, 2009 at 1:49 am
@ Smoke
Thank you for the extremely informative posts. I agree with you in most areas but where my thoughts deviate from you is in your belief that Hyundai is not in the same vain as Toyota and Honda. I believe they should be grouped together. The reason? Because they are all mass-market nameplates.
I do agree that the Genesis Sedan can be compared to Lexus, Lincoln, Mercury, Chrysler, and even BMW/MB. This is just a guess, and I could be off here, but as an example, I would not believe most Lexus ES shoppers to cross shop the new Sonata. However, I could see easily see them cross shopping the ES with the Genesis Sedan.
I like and agree with HMC strategy to benchmark BMW and Lexus but I think the Sonata will be going head-to-head with Camry and Accord. Similar price, size, engine choices etc. Hopefully, people will, as you mentioned, see that the new Sonata is as good (or arguably better in some respects) than the Lexus ES.
With HMC moving in the right direction, the real achievement would be to see Sonata sales top the Accord and then the Camry. Not impossible but a big uphill climb still.
Where Hyundai will never match up to Lexus is in the prestige factor. Who knows, maybe the Genesis name plate could be as prestigious as Lexus one day but I would say the Hyundai name plate will do battle with Toyota, Honda, Nissan, VW etc. into the foreseeable future..
June 29th, 2009 at 2:24 am
Also, regarding ‘Value’ - this a tricky topic because the term is relative. In layman’s terms, that notion of ‘bang-for-the-buck’ is subjective.
Thus a person seeking that ‘prestigious’ vehicle may opt for the Lexus over the German choices because it is cheaper and had a better reputation for reliability therefore, for them, provides a great value. (For the record, I think Lexus quality was there in the early 90’s but currently believe their reputation for reliabiliy is now way over-rated).
Another person my opt for the Genesis Sedan over the Lexus ES and feel they got as great a deal.. The reality is the brand plays an important part of the entire value equation and its relative worth naturally varies from person to person. I am partial to German vehicles personally, but would have no problems going with a Genesis over a Lexus ES. Actually, going with the Genny sedan would be an easy decision to make imo..
June 29th, 2009 at 2:40 am
Couldn’t agree with Smoke more regarding AWD a missing component of the line-up. Here’s my spin:
Make a GENESIS HYBRID AWD. Here’s how to market it: It’s a V6 with the power of a V8 (if they can get output higher than the regular V6), the fuel efficiency of a 4-cyl and the added safety/traction of AWD.
The Hybrid takes the sting out of reduced fuel efficiency figures usually associated with AWD vehicles..
June 29th, 2009 at 4:48 am
True Alex, a hybrid would take some of the sting out. Some automakers are considering electric motors in all 4 wheels, in essence acting as an AWD system.
Hyundai is the Adidas of cars. There was a time when Nike was charging Lexus rates for shoes. Adidas came on the scene and forced Nike to drop their prices. Thus the democritization of shoes came about.
Alex, and who is KIA going to battle with? The Chinese. No, KIA must grow up and quickly (The Chinese, Malaysians, and Indians look to destroy our KIA in the US market), and in Order For KIA to grow up Hyundai must grow up. We have KIA to do battle with VW Toyota, Honda, etc…… Plus, Hyundai has to go upmarket at least a little bit to give people a reason why to buy? VW is going upmarket. Audi is going even more upmarket. Why not US? If KIA can sell cars a little cheaper, then let them be the Toyota car maker.
Why cant Hyundai be the first truly Mass Market Luxury Maker? The White Zinfindel of cars. Provide Leather standard, basic decent performance, projector lights standard, Turbos, AWD options, a stanadrd GPS with a information center and kick it up with ultra high fuel efficiency, and basic safety feautres. (Note: Hyundai is showing that these features can be done very cost effectively) They are engaging that strategy in the big cars the US first, and small Cars in Europe first, but those stratgeies will merge together by the year 2011. Thats when the Genesis will Debut in Europe, and the Accent will Debut here. The Accent is suposed to be the Next “Halo” car. Plus, they do that to the Elantra (i30) and i20 in Europe. Just look at those 2 little cars, they are about as loaded as a Genesis standard, and nearly the same price as a Yaris and Fit (Jazz) over in Europe. Youre getting an Audi A2 and Audi A3 for $15,000 cheaper when you buy our small European Hyundais.
By the way the i20 is a final nominee for European Car of the year, and the ix-55 (Veracruz) is a final nominee for European Truck of the year. The Awards will be given out very soon.
There will be no Genesis Nameplate. Genesis will be a badging for any RWD car. Just like Touring will be a badging for any Hatchback, and SE will be badging for FWD performance. According to John Krafcik. Also, Genesis will be the new bar car. The Tiburon was our last new bar car. New Bar Car=the place where new technology, interior comforts, and designs will be tested. The Tib was the first Hyundai car to provide Leather, now even the Elantra has leather seats in the $1950 Premium package. The Tib was the first car to come out with those modern ringed gauges, they are now in all of the cars.
If Hyundai was to provide a 3rd Nameplate it should be Equus. Equus, should be about providing Rolls Royce, Bentley, and Aston Matrin type Luxury for Lexus Prices. Look at the Equus, it has Bentley comforts and technology at a Lexus Price. I bet that will get some (The operative word is some) Lexus onwers to buy.
June 29th, 2009 at 4:56 am
The Economy sucks and it will be so for the next 10 years. Americans still want luxury, safety, and performance. If we at Hyundai can combine those above features with our award winning quality and Fuel Efficiency, we will win!!!! The Established makes are too costly. Hyundai/KIA/Equus needs to seize the opportunity now.
June 29th, 2009 at 5:02 am
Hyundai/KIA/Equus has gotten fanatical about quality. They have a new program called “Defects to Zero.” The Value Toyota=KIA. The Value Lexus=Hyundai. The Value Rolls Royce=Equus. That would be sweet!!!!!
June 29th, 2009 at 6:25 am
Interesting banter gentlemen. I like the Equus like interior. Smoke, Equus= Rolls… that’s just funny I don’t disagree with the quality or luxury… just the clientel. People who previously went Rolls/Maserati etc. would never go Korean/Asian. Thats just funny.
June 29th, 2009 at 7:32 am
Exactly, but I can see a few Infiniti and Acura buyers talking a look see at one. Who knows, a couple of them might buy one. Thats why they are only doing a limited production run for the US.
June 29th, 2009 at 7:39 am
You Know, EB Iam a financial educator and the facts show that real people who became self made millionaires drove Hyundais, KIAs, American cars, and bought used as well.
There is a market of people who love and can afford Rolls Royces, but never wanted to take a risk due to price. With an Equus, I can see some of those misers taking a risk. You know what Iam talking about, the Boss the Manager the highly educated professional who makes a ton of money and Spends only 10% of their earnings driving a KIA Sorrento or Hyundai Azera, etc….
These wont be high Volume cars, trust me but it will give The Hyundai Motor Company (KIA/Hyundai/Equus) more prestige. Ironic I said Prestige. Thats what the first US Equus will be called.
June 29th, 2009 at 10:09 am
Interesting comments Smoke, appreciate your thoughts..
June 29th, 2009 at 12:21 pm
“”"By the way the i20 is a final nominee for European Car of the year, and the ix-55 (Veracruz) is a final nominee for European Truck of the year. The Awards will be given out very soon.”"”
Good to see these two hyundais nominated for the European COTY awards, but honestly, there are no chances to win the title. Both ofthem are gret buys, however, there are many more exciting vehicles out there that are eligible to win the contest.
June 29th, 2009 at 7:21 pm
Smoke, Lets just hope they dump prestige and stick with equus
June 30th, 2009 at 1:56 am
Yeah, you are right Smoke. I’m seing a turn from the extravagant to the quality cost conscious. People are down sizing… even Lexus just came out with a compact Hybrid… The HS250h…It’s a 4cyl hybrid the size of a large Corolla but under $40K. I think Hyundai should do that with the Accent or Elantra… and offer AWD. HeHeHe.
June 30th, 2009 at 3:34 am
Yeah, EB but we can do that and for less than $25,000. Maybe even $20,000. They might call it Equus Prestige John.
June 30th, 2009 at 4:33 am
Yes Smoke. That could put the industry on it’s ear! Then Hyundai will shake the cheap image completely… I keep thinking about the Superbowl commercial with all of the luxury CEO’s going “Hyundai!!!?” The whole country will be saying that soon!

A 175 HP 1.6L Turbo will go in the Accent SE in the next gen models. This Turbo will also be featured in the Next Gen Tucson.
July 7th, 2009 at 3:47 am
Nice.
July 7th, 2009 at 6:20 am
I dont know the MPG on that Turbo yet in a car the size of an Accent or a Tucson SUV. However, I hear claims that it will beat the Chevy Equinox by 3 MPG, and the Chevy Equinox gets 32 MPG.
It would be smart if Hyundai used this as the base motor in the Sonata.
