Spy shots: 2010 Hyundai i40 (Sonata YF) sedan
The highly anticipated 2010 Hyundai i40, known also as Sonata sedan, has made another appearance today. While parked at an unknown location somewhere in South Korea, a pre-production prototype has been caught by an amateur car enthusiast who managed to snap some new, exciting images of the new Sonata/i40 sedan.
Thanks to the heavy camouflage applied to the cars body, the up-close taken spy shots do not reveal us much of its exterior, but at least these shots confirm that the next Sonata will sport a revolutionary and much more exciting exterior design than the current model.
We are less than six months away from official Sonata / i40 unveiling. According to Hyundais future product timeline, the next generation Sonata is scheduled to go on sale in South Korean market in September 2009, while official US sales have been confirmed to commence in February 2009.
Even though no official information regarding the engines were so far released, it is fair to assume that the engine line-up will consist of highly advanced gasoline and diesel engines. The gasoline power will come from a 2.4L Theta II engine and a 3.3 Lambda V6. Both gasoline engines have been tweaked to improve their fuel consumption numbers while at the same time provide even more power to the wheels.
Just recently, Hyundai introduced a pair of all-new, EURO5 compliant, R-diesel engines with dramatically enhanced power and torque ratings - when compared to the current Hyundai offerings and Sonata is expected to benefit from both of these two engines.
The 2.2L diesel engine provides 145 kW of power and 436 Nm of maximum torque while the 2.0L unit delivers 135 kW and 392 Nm. Figures that make the R-diesel engine family class leaders in comparison to similar offerings from BMW, Toyota, Honda and Volkswagen.
Diesel engine availability will of course depend on market. Europe and South Korea will get them both, while diesels wont be available in the North American market.
Latest reports also suggest that Hyundai will broaden its Sonata line-up with a sporty wagon variant, joining the range in late 2010 about six months after Sonata sedan hits the market.
When talking on Sonatas future powertrain options, I almost forgot to mention, the popular Hyundai mid-size sedan will also get a highly advanced hybrid drive system. Hyundai first introduced its in-house developed Blue Drive hybrid system at the 2008 L.A. Auto Show and confirmed it to arrive in the market in late 2010 or early 2011.
In addition to that, Hyundai also confirmed it will bring a plug-in hybrid car to the market in 2012 as a 2013 model product, but refused to reveal whether their plug-in hybrid car will be based on the 2010 Hyundai Sonata / i40 sedan or it will be stand alone model similar to Chevy Volt, Toyota Prius or Honda Insight.
Thanks for sending us the 2010 Hyundai Sonata / i40 spy shots, Lee!

WOW..loving the red colour…works really well with the wheels and the body in general…this looks like a winner…hope hyundai gets it right
June 8th, 2009 at 4:41 pm
This one looks like a winner but it will make the Elantra, the Azera obsolete in terms of design…..any spy shots on the Elantra update and Azera redesign??
I hope Hyundai doesn’t ridiculously raise the price of the car
June 8th, 2009 at 5:19 pm
The elantra doesn’t need an update…it needs a full redesign…the current one is dated and old…as for the azera…i love that car..hope the redesign it..otherwise…i think it has the same fate as the entourage
June 8th, 2009 at 5:21 pm
Oh and as far as pricing goes…it might go up….but i doubt it will surpass the camry and accord for any trim level
June 8th, 2009 at 5:49 pm
Look for GENUS concept of Hyundai’s website…hints for the Sonata Wagon
June 8th, 2009 at 6:47 pm
Looking good in Red. Although I wish they would expose the tail pipe on the non V6 models.
Re: next Elantra, John K said the next one will be sexy and desirable. (comments made during a HyundaiThinkTank live chat session).
June 8th, 2009 at 8:39 pm
Looks great! Hope you can get active turning bixenons, push button start, dual zone climate, heated/cooled seats, radar cruise control, led turn signals/tail lights, larger sunroof, etc, as options.

Pretty sure that this is the 2011MY, not the 2010. I’m a salesman at a Hyundai dealership and we are getting the 2010 model in August, and they haven’t fully unveilled the re-design yet. That’s what leads me to belive that this is the 2011.
Beautiful car though from what I’ve seen.
June 8th, 2009 at 10:18 pm
JB are you saying that you’ve actually seen the “preview” of the upcoming all new redesigned Sonata? If you have can you give us your impressions of the car? Have you seen the interior for example?
Thanks.
June 8th, 2009 at 10:19 pm
Doesn’t look like it will have LED turn signals or tail lights.
JB,
Yes the all-new YF will be the 2011.
June 8th, 2009 at 10:28 pm
Oh, I find this funny. A nice opportunity to take pix of this car, the window is open and not an interior shot in the mix. Go figure.
June 8th, 2009 at 11:28 pm
I’m surprised that someone hasn’t removed the padding and snapped away by now.
The sort of money they’d make from auto sites/mags would more than compensate for the strife.
I’m not saying it’s right to do it, but highly surprising that it hasn’t happened!

What a really nice car and I hope the price is just right for this one…
June 9th, 2009 at 1:26 am
A true competitor to the Camry/Accord in my opinion.. I say it will nudge in nicely between the two - a comfortable ride for long trips but elements of sportiness from the Accord.
Hyundai will continue to grab more marketshare world wide as it revamps its entire lineup.. I’m curious to see what direction they go with the Elantra but i’d bet it will be a looker..
June 9th, 2009 at 4:10 am
JB,
I’m curious as to why the US 2010 won’t be out until August, if it’s just going to be another NFA. The NFA hit the US market in late Feb. ‘08 as a ‘09 model, so the ‘09 will have been on sale for an awfully long time, especially considering there’s a ‘10 Camry and Focus/Milan already out. Plus if the YF comes out in Jan. ‘10 as an ‘11 model, the 2010 will be on market for only about 7 months. Will there be big powertrain updates, like the 6-speed auto and 259hp 3.3L for the 2010?
June 9th, 2009 at 5:06 am
This car will probably have options placed downmarket with Accords and Camrysin price, and have options that will make it a Milan, MKZ, and Lucernne Competitor in price.
June 9th, 2009 at 2:31 pm
Derrick G,
I am thinking along the same lines as you as to why we are getting the 2010 only 7 months before the all new 2011. For this to make any sense, there would have to be a powertrain update for 2010, before the YF comes in 2011. I don’t know about any engine upgrades, but I am relativly postitive that the 2010 Sonata will get the 6 speed auto.
My manager and I have been trying to get to the bottom of it for a while. That’s one thing with Hyundai that I don’t like- they don’t like to disclose many details about their upcoming cars, and their model years drop at unpredictable and uncommon dates. You just don’t know what you’re going to get from Hyundai or what exactly it will look like until it comes off of the truck.
June 9th, 2009 at 3:03 pm
JB,
I just checked the EPA’s fuel economy site and the 2010 has been already certified. No 6sp auto. Same fuel ratings as 2009 it looks like. Odd.
June 9th, 2009 at 3:21 pm
That’s interesting. I don’t understand Hyundai sometimes.
For example- we just got a shipment of Elantras, and they have new wheels, a new usb jack to go with the aux jack, new gauge cluster, and an interior with some new materials. So I think to myself that they did a nice job with the 2010. That is, until I look at the window sticker. “2009 Elantra”. Not 2010, not 2009.5, but the same “2009″ thats been out for months now.
June 9th, 2009 at 3:46 pm
I don’t see what the point of getting a new 2010 model, and then replacing it the following year is…waste of money isn’t it
June 9th, 2009 at 8:50 pm
I wonder if we’ll get that red here?

JB,
The press release that came out for the 2009 said delayed availability for the USB jack and new cluster, so this was planned, but sure did take a long time.

This is a bit off topic but check out the toyobaru..

what do u think gen coupe got some competition or no?
June 10th, 2009 at 5:47 am
Looks like a VW grille there, it looks good though. Hyundai is becoming an light upmarket brand, we dont really compete with the likes of Toyota anymore. Maybe the Subuaru Variant which is a little upmarket, but not Toyota.

A nice choice of red.. Liking that it is a dark/deep color - usually I like only Ferrari’s in red, hhh
June 13th, 2009 at 7:37 am
Its a candy apple red Alex. I wonder if this will come in Lime Rock Green, or make a Green apple color?
June 14th, 2009 at 2:12 am
Been reading some of the comments, and now im a bit confused…help me get this straight…theres gonna be a brand new sonata in 2010…and then the year right after theres gonna be a new one?
June 14th, 2009 at 10:50 pm
No, the new Sonata coming out is the 2010. Hyundai is scrapping the Current gen Sonata, Accent, and Elantra earlier than Scheduled.
Sonata=1 year earlier.
Accent= 6 months earlier.
Elantra=2 years earlier.
Hyundai/KIA are taking cues from the Honda playbook in the late 70s when the eocnomy was bad. Introduce new models and redesigned models even if they are a year or 2 earlier than scheduled, and make the models high value/low dollar ones. That move helpd to make honda what it is today. I dont think the Civic or Accord would have been as popular as they are today if they waited until the end of the 5 year cycle sometimes. Honda did this 3 times with its models.
June 15th, 2009 at 4:39 pm
Smoke, what does the schedule look like for the next gen Elantra? Do you think we will be seeing spyshots anytime soon?
June 17th, 2009 at 5:44 am
Just stumbled on this site as I’m buying an ‘09 Sonata. I can tell you all that I just rented for 2 weeks (and returned today) a 2010 Sonata GLS. It is the same body/interior as the ’09s as far as I could tell. Where the rental place got the 2010 I have no idea, but it was on all the documentation and NY registration. The dealership sales guy where I’m buying the new one didn’t believe me and walked out to check the car. He checked the car docs and said, “weird!” I wish I wrote down the VIN… might have it on one of my papers. I’ll check.
June 17th, 2009 at 6:55 am
Elantra: Maybe Summer 2010
Accent: Spring 2010
Accent spyshots would probably come first maybe in 2-4 months from now, I can see them debuting a small car concept first in July, August or September or something, then Debuting a Prototype in January.
June 17th, 2009 at 6:58 am
The First Elantra Spyshots will probably come when it gets tested in the snow up in Switzerland.
June 18th, 2009 at 7:12 am
Thanks Smoke, I hear you on the color choice. Hmm, interesting call on the green apple-colored Sonata but my intuition says sticking with your usual suspects of Black, Grey, White, Blue, Red etc.. the way to start off.
Perhaps on the Genny Coupe but less so on the Sonata.. A lime rock green Sonata would be cool tho~
June 22nd, 2009 at 6:10 am
Smoke: Here’s your lime green Genny Coupe. Def not for the timid, shy or bashful. I like it - model also looking fine, hhh..

I doubt Hyundai will dramatically increase the price. They know how to carefully position their products. Way to go Hyundai with your design, quality and pricing
August 21st, 2009 at 10:11 am
These Spy Shots are not the 2010 Sonata. Dealers are selling 2010 Sonata’s and the exterior looks exactly like the 2009’s. What a letdown.

MICHAEL 1963, FROM ITALY *

The Next Gen Elantra Spyshots are out, its a looker and will feature the Hexagon Grille with the Sonata 4 Door Coupe Styling.
Expect these cars to cost $2000-$3000 more than their KIA Counterparts. Most Hyundai cars already cost $2000 more than their KIA versions.

They are keeping their Accent Program heavily Secretive, which bodes well for their statements that the Accent will be a baby Genesis “Halo” car.
September 13th, 2009 at 11:30 pm
Bob G the 2010 Sonata’s are just 09s with 2010 stickers on them. Production has ceased on the current gen model, and they are re-tooling everything in Alabama to build the new version as we speak.
The 2010 Model year will be a short year for the Sonata, expect to see the 2011 model on dealer lots by Feb-Mar 2010.
