Australia: Hyundai posts record high May 2009 sales
The Australian Hyundai dealer network set an outstanding sales record last month. Hyundai dealers across the country “Down Under” have posted their best ever May sales. This is Hyundais best May sales result ever since the carmaker entered the Aussie soil.
With sales of 5.178 new vehicles, Hyundai acquired a 6.9 percent market share. In May 2008, Hyundai held “only” 4.4 percent of Australian new car market, while last month its market share jumped to almost 7 percent, acquiring the highest market share since December 2001 for the brand.
In the first five months of fiscal year, Hyundai sold 22.073 new vehicles in Australia, while at the same time last year, Hyundai old 18.970 new cars.
Among Hyundai models it was the i30 compact hatch that posted the highest sales gain. In fact, the multi-award winning i30 range ranked third in the small car segment in May after posting its best ever sales result of 1.959 units, cementing a third placing YTD.
Many other models, including Getz, Tucson and iLoad posted double digit sales. The sub-compact Getz hatchback ranked second and Tucson SUV ranked third in their respective segments, while the iLoad van ranked second in the van segment.
For Hyundai Motor Company Australia it was like there were no signs of recession and weakening car demand. The overall car market in Australia was down 19.2 percent in May 2009 compared to the same month a year earlier and Hyundai was the sole automaker that posted a sales gain among top ten brands.

Australian unemployment is barely 5%, ours in America is close to 10%.

Yeah I’d say we’re having it easy down here… lucky us I guess~
I read that Hyundai was 5th in terms of sales here and both the Getz and the i30 were in the top 10 most sold cars in Australia. I hope good times are ahead for Hyundai in Australia, as the sales figures have been nothing short of mediocre prior to the iMax/iLoad and i30.
