Hyundai Motor America announces May 2009 sales
Hyundai Motor America has just released its latest sales report and revealed the public its May 2009 new car sales numbers. During the last month, Korean largest automaker achieved the sales of 36.937 cars and SUVs, representing a 20 percent fall compared to record setting May 2008.
While a 20 percent sales decline might sound a huge decrease, you should know that Hyundais May sales increased 9 percent compared to a month earlier (April 2008) when 33.950 units have been sold.
In general, new car sales numbers prove that U.S. auto industry have been at the lowest levels in the last 26 years and that latest researches show one in nine car buyers are delaying their car purchases until the market conditions improve.
Last month was a tough month for everyone, but Hyundai Motor America once again fared better than most of the automakers selling cars in the US market. In fact, May sales performance marks the fifth consecutive month of year-over-year monthly retail share gains for Hyundai.
The mid-size Sonata sedan remained as Hyundais top selling model in the US market in May 2009 with sales of 11.059 units. This is a bit lower sales number as achieved last year, but Sonata is getting revamped within a few months and some consumers might postponed purchase until new model to rolls in.

Elantra has been closely followed by a US-built Hyundai Santa Fe and Accent sub-compact car with sales of 6.486 and 5.877 units respectively.
Worst performing vehicles last month, in terms of sales have been the Entourage, which is going to be discontinued from Hyundais line up and near-luxury Azera sedan both posting sales well below 500 units.
Hyundais May 2009 sales report excludes separate sales numbers for its fresh new Genesis Coupe and Genesis sedan. Combined, there were 2.079 units sold last month.

Why aren’t they breaking out the Genesis Coupe sales? It seems they are either rolling it into Tib or Gen sedan figures.
Anyone know?

EDIT: Nevermind. Both Gen Coupe and Sedan are combined.
Tib sales just happen to be up.

I imagine dealers are hustling to get rid of Tibs. Could also be that some people are coming in to see the Genesis Coupe, can’t afford it, and are sold a Tib instead.

Derrick G this is what I am also thinking. “Spillover” sales are helping gin up Tibby sales. Some dealers are seeing more floor traffic because of the Gen Coupe and as you pointed out the ones who’d like the Genesis Coupe but are a few zeros short of the payment, can console themselves with the much more affordable Tib. Win-Win. Nice play Hyundai.

Hyundai is trying to make all the last pennies from the Entourage while they can.

Does anyone have an update on what they will do with the azera? It has been constantly under performing?

Gen1:
Per HyundaiThinkTank.com there will be a 2nd gen Azera with a more youthful look.
As for why they don’t advertise the Azera, they said people don;t “respond” well to Azera ads.

John,
It was open to registration at the beginning of the year. Looks like they’ve stopped new registrations for now. But it was confirmed a new Azera is on it’s way, and they are planing to introduce the Equus in USA too.
