Electric cars are recognized to be the future of automobile industry and Hyundai has realized that long time ago. For years, the Korean largest car maker has been investing in the green car research and development and just recently announced to bring a slew of eco-friendly cars to the market.

To become an environmental leader in the automotive sector, the company has revealed it plans to bring plug-in hybrid cars and fuel cell electric vehicle to the market by 2013. In addition to that, the market will also see a full-time electric car, which is currently in the development and scheduled to hit the Korean market in 2011!

Hyundais electric city car will be based on the sub-compact car platform, currently used by the B-segment i20 hatchback. According to latest report from Hyundai, its full-time electric vehicle will be similar in size as its i20 sibling model and will feature the next generation lithium ion polymer battery pack.

While being lighter and more compact in size, the lithium polymer batteries also have higher output than nickel-metal hydride batteries. The battery pack will be supplied by LG Chem and will give the city car an autonomy of 100 kilometers. This is an acceptable distance when considering the average journey in an urban environment is always under 40 kilometers.

The company has already proceeded with development and the seeds of hard work will be seen in about 10 months. Korean media has been revealed that Hyundai will build a concept car bring it to the 2010 NAIAS (North American International Auto Show) for its exclusive public preview!
