Hyundai unveils its first-ever turbocharged V8 engine, which churns out impressive 460 horsepower.

Continuing an onslaught with an array of novelties, Hyundai has today unveiled a prototype of its new 460-horsepower V8 Tau engine. Hyundais latest engine prototype features all the technical know-how the company has gathered over the past few years of its rapid development.

The engine we see here is a derivate of the award winning V8 Tau engine applied to the Genesis sedan and features a supercharger and some other core performance technologies, that are brining power ratings to 460 hp - the highest hp rating for a Hyundai engine ever - and 435Nm of torque.

We have learned that in addition to screw-type roots supercharger, Hyundai also applied a novel clutched pulley, water-to-air intercooler and cylinder deactivation to the V8 Tau prototype.

According to an engineer from Hyundai, the engine delivers 30 percnt increase in power and torque, while at the same time, it also achieves up to 8 percent better fuel economy compared to its existing 380-hp V8 engine. This was achieved by implementing the highly advanced cylinder deactivation technology, which is expected to debut in Hyundai vehicles very soon.

This impressive engine prototype makes us wondering when Hyundai’s going to bring it to serial production and what car will it be applied to. Perhaps Hyundai has a sporty Spec-R Genesis sedan in plans, who knows? [Source: Jalopink]
