New Hyundai Equus sedan will cost over $96,000
The all-new Hyundai Equus sedan, which is soon going to make its official Korean debut, will not only be the most technologically advanced Korean car, but also the one wearing the highest price tag ever.
We have been informed that the top of the range Equus limousine, powered by 5.0L V8 and all the goodies will cost Won 130,000,000 or $96,000 on the South Korean market.
The all-new Hyundai Equus sedan will initially be available in two powertrain configurations: 3,8L Lambda V6 and 4.6L Tau V8 engines. Some six months later, in the second half of the year, Hyundai plans to equip the Equus with even more potent 420+ horsepower, 5.0L V8 powrplant capable of powering the car to 100 km/h (62-mph) from a standstill in less than 6 seconds.
The already gigantic Hyundai limousine (current model) will also grow in size. The 2010 Hyundai Equus sedan stands at 5160mm of length, 1900mm of width, 1495 of heighth and features a 3045mm long wheelbase.
Among the new features on the 2010 Hyundai Equus luxury sedan are Pre-Safe seatbelts, LED technology in the headlights and other innovations such as Lane Departure Warning System and Vehicle Stability Management II.
At this point, there are no plans to export this car to the US and European markets.
UPDATE: First images of the undisguised Hyundai Equus -VI surfaced to the web today!

HOLY SNAP….96 grand?!?! if this ever came over this could be pretty bad for hyundai…i dunno if anyone will spend 96 grand for a hyundai….YET
January 21st, 2009 at 4:18 am
John, Fully loaded V8 5.0 L is 96 grand. Since this is a S-class, 7 series, and Ls competitor, it is really cheap for that category, like Hyundai Genesis. The base of the S-class starts at $89.350. Base of 7 series is $80.300 and Lexus Ls H(Hybrid) base price is at $105.885

I find quite offensive people who say “…for a hyundai”.
January 21st, 2009 at 6:56 am
Yes, as mentioned in the article, 96 grand is not the entry level price but one with ALL of the bells and whistles. Also note, pricing is for the Korean model. The models in Korea are about 20% more expensive for the same vehicle in the US. Not sure why they charge Korean’s more but perhaps it has to do with being competitive in the US and part because they can.. My best guess is that this car, if sold in the US, would start at an entry level price of $65K? I honestly have not idea however but sub-70K sounds like an interesting proposition..
Obviously this is not a high volume vehicle but one to show the public that they have the technology to keep up and arguably a ‘halo’ car to further improve and build upon the brand.

Seeing the rear, it’s screams “Mercedes” loudly.
January 21st, 2009 at 10:52 pm
um alex S, you know how every products from its origin has more features than export models. for instance, even in korean sonata model, it has a power sunshade, but in US we do not have that feature.
January 22nd, 2009 at 7:51 am
um jason, no, not every product in Seoul has more features than export models. Not every Korean wants a vehicle fully loaded and they have base models in Seoul that compare with similar base models that are exported.
I was comparing apples to apples and for the same vehicle with the same equipment set up, you are still looking at a minumim 15-20% price differential factoring in the current exchange rate. I am currently working here so I have looked around, asked questions at dealerships and done the math.

Hmm, personally not feeling the profile above. The Genesis sedan in production form was relatively close to the concept vehicle but the above pic is not similar to the meancing concept pic - although I do see similarities.
If it looks like that, it will not cause a ripple among MB/BMW/Lexus buyers that I am sure they are hoping to do..

I think the car is rather nice myself. I figured Hyundai arent shipping this baby to the states becoause of: 1. The shear size! 2. Hyundai will not want to insure 1000+ of these beasts in shipping either. I just recently saw on a website where unloaders ruined a Maserati. That would be horrible! 3. Then they would have to Americanize the thing with the odometer, speedometer, the radio and other electronic items… it would have to go through F.C.C. testing because of the navigation and phone system. 4. Then there are the safety standards. And a whole bunch of other red tape items. 5. Then there is the demand. They would have to get well over 5000 pre-orders to make it worth their while. THEN what would this baby cost?… even the stripped model would be expensive. The only way this car would fly for them in the states is if they build a modified version of it in a local factory using HQs specs via e-mail, ftp or whatever. I would love to see this car here but I don’t think the demand is there yet. I mean, even in Korea they had to sell the Genesis as it’s own car brand when it was first introduced. We will see. What do you guys think?

EB: Hyundai’s not selling Genesis under it’s own brand in korea!
January 22nd, 2009 at 9:44 pm
EB: I don’t think Hyundai has ever been selling Genesis under it’s own brand in korea! Can you back up your statement with something?
January 23rd, 2009 at 2:21 am
@admin:
Yes, you are correct - Hyundai is NOT selling the Genesis under it’s own brand. It is sold at Hyundai dealerships and still under the Hyundai brand.
However EB is correct in the sense that Hyundai tried it to differentiate the Genesis from other offerings by trying to go upscale and even resorted to no ‘H’ badge on the hood. However, it is not under its own brand unfortuantely..
January 23rd, 2009 at 6:20 am
yes Genesis is still from Hyundai, but it uses different badge, or emblem to stay away from Hyundai Bedge, for instance, like Nissan’s super car Gt-R, Nissan uses different emblem like genesis, but it is still from Nissan.
BTW. I do not completely agree with EB, he said this car is too big to import to other countries. HELLO??! have you not heard of Mabach?

[…] The Equus will also be available with the Genesis’s 3.8-liter Lambda V6 and 4.6-liter Tau V8, so, according to the well-informed Hyundaiophiles at Hyundai Blog, its starting price is more likely to be in the region of ,000 when it goes on sale in South Korea next year. [via Hyundai Blog] […]

Thank you all for your input and dicussion. And yes Jason I have heard of Maybach. The Landaulet is a sick piece of machinery. And what I was getting at was not that Hyundai couldn’t ship the car but they wouldn’t want to pay to INSURE to ship the car. Not without people pre-ordering them (in full) My point is once you hit a price bracket in ANY PRODUCT you natually change gears with the manufacturer. If you want a $500K+ car, you think Rolls, Bugatti, Maybach for $100K+ you think Lamborghini, Ferrari, Porsche, Maserati.. for $50K+ you think Audi, Mercedes, BMW, maybe Lexus etc. $25k+ maybe Acura, Infinity, Cadillac, etc. under $30k a slew of others. That’s what I was getting at. Most of us are wired that waay now because of the current marketing and distribution trends. The wonderful think here is Hyundai…although only barely succesful, is trying to throw away all those marketing stereotypes… We wll just have to see if we are ready for this. It will be a tough challenge for Hyundai. We will see where it goes. Thanks for listening guys. Hey, keep up the good work Admin.
January 24th, 2009 at 7:09 am
ooh i see EB. but i don’t get why Acura, infinity, and cadillac is in $25k category, they all makes good cars and prices are similar to German Luxury automakers, MB, BMW, and AUDI.

Hyundai should seriously consider making a luxury brand now…it would help the genesis and the equus and w.e new car their scheming up…that is.. if it is a luxury veichle
January 26th, 2009 at 5:09 am
most korean cars in korea offer more luxiorous options compared to the ones here, BUT there are exceptions
February 10th, 2009 at 2:23 am
new equs will master car-world..
just look at those..
February 10th, 2009 at 6:13 am
Note: EB was correct in stating the Genesis Sedan was sold under its ‘own brand’ in the sense that the badge on the trunk is different.
http://www.genesisowners.com/hyundai-genesis-forum/picture.php?albumid=12&pictureid=266
However, it is still sold at Hyundai dealerships and thus not under a different brand as Lexus is to Toyota. Still, I think it is an interesting marketing move and doesn’t really do any harm.. I like the badge personally - a little more bold..
February 10th, 2009 at 6:15 am
This badge is on vehicles sold on Genesis vehicles sold in Korea. I am not sure about other markets or regions. I am not sure where this picture was taken but I am certain it is not Korea..
February 10th, 2009 at 6:17 am
Correction: This badge is on the Genesis SEDAN sold in Korea..
February 11th, 2009 at 2:28 am
the second picture looks good…but the first one just doesn’t look right
February 22nd, 2009 at 2:13 am
I live in Korea. I would have a hard time spending nearly 100k for a Korean car. Koreans might not be going for such ‘Korean luxury’ either when you can get a more prestigious foreign car for the same price. Koreans love foreign things, if they can afford(get loans for.. they are credit rich just like westerners) they will opt for foreign cars. No-one is loaning now especially for depreciating items such as luxury cars. I really don’t know who is going to be buying these cars. If they can’t borrow; they can’t buy it’s that simple. Also keep in mind that Hyundai, even in Korea, has much lower re-sale values on average than any import luxury car.
We are also suffering from hard economic times here as well and our currency has lost nearly 40% against the greenback in 18months ago. We still have a long way to go downward.

For a Hyundai that is way too much,96 grand?!? horrible idea if it came to the us, i rather get a Mercedes or a BMW instead, and i am sure that the korean people agree with me on this that with that kind of cash they would definetly buy a european car instead, hence the reason why not many people drive a skyline, no matter what it is still a nissan and with that amount of cost, im better off buying a porche and telling people i drive a porche instead of a nissan.

At EB “The wonderful think here is Hyundai…although only barely succesful”
If Hyundai really IS “ONly Barely Successful” Then I wonder why they’re ranked FIFTH PLACE in Worldwide sales putting honda in sixth and only behind Toyota, GM, VW and Ford.
and $25k+ Cadillac? Are you crazy? Cadillacs would be in the 50k+ and most infinities are 40k+
April 20th, 2009 at 7:46 am
Very excellent features. This is guaranteed to boost in sales.
May 14th, 2009 at 8:07 pm
I just don’t see too many people paying 96 grand for Hyundai in this economy. Maybe if their was a following of some sort for the brand but even with loyalty that will be difficult.

WOW is all I can say! This eye catching sedan just came to the Hyundai dealership I work at and I am in awe of this first class luxuary automobile. It is awesome and being 6′5″ tall, I cannot fit in many Hyundai models but this puppy fits like a glove. And can you say luxuary? I love the hood ornanament too…how retro and classy. It makes the Genesis and Genesis Coupe look like poor mens luxuary cars! Now to figure out how I can afford one on my salary, very doubtful so I will have to settle for my 2009 Mazda 6 GT sedan (we have a Mazda dealership too).
March 9th, 2010 at 11:36 pm
Hello Korea….If it’s that much do not bother to send it because Americans will not pay it. It’s a Hyundai for pete’s sake. Be reasonable. Hyundai 50,000 tops…48,000 it would sell ok. I would buy Lincoln,Mercedes, before Hyundai at that crazy price…
March 10th, 2010 at 5:24 pm
Isn’t the Genesis selling from $50k-$70k in South Korea? And here it starts at $33k… so I don’t think the Equus will be anywhere near $96k in the US.
