Next generation Hyundai Sonata YF renderings
First renderings ofnext-generation Hyundai Sonata, codenamed YF, surface to the web.
First of all, I would like to thank Adel for these two hot looking Hyundai Sonata renderings. He has sent them to me in a hope to publish them on the blog.
The renderings preview the 2010 Hyundai Sonata sedan, which is scheduled to go on sale in South Korea in the third quarter of next year. The new model will retain nothing but four wheels and two tail-pipes from the current model. Everything else will be different and developed from a scratch.
Codenamed YF, the next generation Hyundai Sonata sedan will receive a completely redesigned exterior. Gone will be boring exterior shape and replaced with a four-door coupe like body style. We are expecting to see more potent diesel and gasoline engines and Hyundais first hybrid-electric system to propel the brand new Sonata sedan.
Renderings we see here are the first (unofficial) preview of the 2010 Hyundai Sonata. They are based on the Genesis sedan and previous Sonata spy shots. Both look really outstanding, and if Hyundai manages to bring future production Sonata sedan as close to the one as we see here, then it will have another winner on its hands! Thanks for the tip Adel!

All I can say is two words followed by 3 words.
Smash Hit!
I want one!
December 15th, 2008 at 11:16 pm
Beautiful car! I just bought a 2009 Sonata Limited and think the looks, while generic, are still classy. But this is something else! Gorgeous!
December 16th, 2008 at 2:24 pm
This is more like it! After seeing the new Genesis sedan I was hoping Hyundai would carry some of its design cues to other models. If they go ahead with this I know for sure I’ll be purchasing a Sonata for my next vehicle. Beautiful, simply beautiful.
December 16th, 2008 at 4:05 pm
If the Sonata really comes out so attractively designed, then it will endanger the Genesis. It will look better than Genesis, more affordable and more fuel efficient.
I also can’t wait to see the hybrid version of the 2010 Sonata!
December 16th, 2008 at 4:45 pm
Good news is: Stunning model
Less than good (?) news is: it’s a Hyundai
Why can’t Honda come up with such design gems??
December 16th, 2008 at 4:57 pm
Because it’s Honda!
I agree with your first statement, but not with the second one. Is there a problem that it’s wearing a Hyundai badge??
December 16th, 2008 at 5:36 pm
this is amazing. i don’t think it endangers the genesis @ all. if i did, u think they’d make it? the genesis is a beautiful car, this would compliment it very well. & by THIS pic, it seems hyundai has a design theme they’re going with. assuming the production model looks like this one.
December 16th, 2008 at 6:04 pm
Admin: yep… still not convinced. To paraphrase: old prejudices die hard. Despite positive reviews with late-year models, doubt still lingers, at least in my mind. I bought a Honda Accord in 1999 and NEVER had a serious problem with it (still own it, BTW). Would I be able to say the same with a Sonata? I’d buy one in a heartbeat if I knew for sure.
December 16th, 2008 at 6:14 pm
Well, we bought the Hyundai Accent in 1995 and haven’t had any problems until today. Over 200,000 miles and still going strong. So based on my experience, YES, I can say that for Hyundai as well.
December 16th, 2008 at 6:15 pm
BTW…. I remember seeing a ‘concept’ 2008 Accord early in 2008. REALLY nice looking. Boy, was THAT a disappointment when the actual model turned out! I guess the designers got more and more ’skittish’ as the official launch date approached. They thought the concept model was much too revolutionary for the (aging) traditional Accord driver.
SIGH
December 16th, 2008 at 6:49 pm
I remember that concept as well, and it was very nice! The current Honda Accord doesn’t look bad, but it’s not stunning either, so perhaps this is the right time to shift to Hyundai, noel08!?!
I’m sure this Sonata will be one of the best looking cars in it’s class. At the beginning it will also be the only four-door coupe and it will also have a hybrid-system with world’s first Lithium Polymer Batteries that leapfrog existing Nickel-Metal hydride and Lithium-Ion technology.
December 16th, 2008 at 7:05 pm
Better still…
Time to change the 1995 Accent, admin?
December 16th, 2008 at 7:20 pm
Here’s some additional info

December 16th, 2008 at 7:45 pm
Aww! That was a low blow noelO8… I’m sure admin gets better gas milage… anyway…
The Sonata is a great car. I had a 2002 V6 and I had no problem with it. I only traded it because you can’t fit some medical equipment that my wife required after developing a serious illness. But I did find out through my dealer that the owner is still driving the car and it is still runnung well.
Since Hyundai introduced its 10 year 100K mile warranty they have had to make vehicles that will actually make it that far… think about it. Honda’s warranty can’t compete with this.
I also don’t think this car will not overshadow the Genesis. If this is in fact what is will look like. This is a front wheel drive platform; the Genesis is RWD. This car probably will come in 4 cyl models; the Genesis comes in a V8. This car will not appeal to the execs this one is for the masses. The car Hyundai now needs to worry about is the Azera… Currently it’s not selling as well. And it needs a redesign if the Sonota looks like this in 2010!
December 16th, 2008 at 8:01 pm
Yeah, it’s time for the new car! What I’ll buy? Probably something from Hyundai or Kia. I’m a Korean car guy and love their vehicles, especially latest offerings, which are really competitive to other competitive models.
I don’t find it nowhere close to the Nissan. Nissan does advertise Altima as a four-door coupe, which it actually isn’t.
I find next gen. Sonata looking more like a VW passat cc or mercedes benz cls. Similar roof-line, but most probably, Sonata will offer seating for five, while aforementioned two cars only offer seating for four.
December 16th, 2008 at 8:11 pm
Didn’t mention in my previous post that, before I bought the 2009 Sonata, I had owned 3 Accords. Couldn’t see shelling out $4,500 more for a 4th one than the Sonata. After 5 months and 7000 miles, I am extremely pleased. No problems to speak of yet, and the only advantage the Accord has over the Sonata in driving is the handling. Otherwise,(ride, quiet, equipment, fuel economy) the Sonata is equal or better, from my experience. If I can still say that 3 years from now, I’ll be extremely happy - except I’ll be wanting one of the new Sonatas if they’re designed like this!
December 16th, 2008 at 8:47 pm
Glad to hear your positive experience with the Sonata GB!!
I’m thinking of adding an owners review section, where Hyundai owners could write short (or more extensive) reviews of their cars and their ownership experiences.
Do you think this would be interesting enough for our readers?
December 16th, 2008 at 9:38 pm
Oh! One major 2006-2009 design faux-pa. Please tell me that the side mirrors on the 2010 are planned to be folding/ collapsing. I can remember no less than 5 occasions when I used to work in the city where this design feature saved me from replacing a mirror on my 2002 Sonata!
December 17th, 2008 at 7:07 pm
I own a V8 Genesis! This is my first Hyundai and let me tell you , Hyundai got it RIGHT!
This Sonata looks SWEET!
Now, if we could only get them to drop in the V8 or a 300+ hp v6!
December 17th, 2008 at 9:01 pm
All I can say is wow. If it looks anything like these renderings then it will be hands down the most attractive car in this class and price range. As PINGGOLD said; they DID get it right with the Genesis and with the coupe to come and other exciting models as well Honda and Toyota have a lot to be afraid of.

December 22nd, 2008 at 6:15 pm
On my third Sonata(03)and more than 250,000 kilometers later it still runs like the day I bought it. Great!
If these photos of the 2010 are any indication of what’s coming, I’m sold!
December 22nd, 2008 at 7:37 pm
Wow admin.,I’ve never seen a thread like this on this website. Boy, if Hyundai doesen’t build the 2010 Sonata like this, they will not be be popular at all! Even with this image leak, these images could set the whole industry on it’s ear. It would be awesome to see a car that looks as good as an Infinity or Lexus for the price of a Honda or Nissan… from an underdog like this! Merry Christmas.
December 24th, 2008 at 8:39 pm
Hyundais are great cars that do not need that long warranty anymore. Or they can extend that to 200,000 miles. 100,000 miles does scare some poeple into thinking the cars are junk. As a young small car lover in my mid 20’s. Why would I pay $400 a month for a Juenvile looking Fit, when I can get nearly the same content from an Accent for $230 a month? To me that extra $170 is going towards the fact that Iam buying a Honda. I can save that money for a house, or some investments.
The 1.6L Alpha in the Accent is always tested to outlast the 4cyl in the Toyota Corolla by the way.

Who is Adel? Is she a Hyundai publicist and did “she” post the Genesis rendering that proved to be accurate?
December 29th, 2008 at 1:45 pm
Graham B: Adel is one of our readers. He’s from USA and has been a Hyundai fan since he bought his 2004 Sonata. He found these pics somewhere on the web and send them to me.
And no,I think he’s not a Hyundai publicist…
December 29th, 2008 at 10:26 pm
Thanks Admin. I’ve got a 2005 Sonata V6 Elite (Australia). It’s a well made car and great value.
It would be appreciated if you could ask Adel where he found the pics. Your site was the first to post them on Dec. 15. Many motoring sites and forums have now posted the pics. Their origin would reveal a lot about their accuracy.
January 2nd, 2009 at 10:12 pm
January 5th, 2009 at 3:42 am
Stunning! Simply gorgeous. I have been relatively loyal to Honda and Toyota in the past and my father has driven his 2001 Maxima (with a lot of brake problems). If the new Sonata looks anything like this, there is a very good chance I will switch to it. I have driven them before and the ride was well balanced but it was the ho-hum styling that prevented me from signing up. This would be my first Korean vehicle purchase and I might follow that up with a V6 Genesis. I am seriously impressed with the goods coming out of the Hyundai design house these days..
Question: Will the coupe like profile alienate some buyers? Should they keep the bread-and-butter Sonata more mainstream and add replace the Azera with something that looks like this rendering? Just a thought.. Regardless, Hyundai stock looks to rise over the next 5 years in my opinion..
January 5th, 2009 at 10:54 am
Alex, unfortunately is is only a chop of a Genesis chop, but it will contain over 50% of what we see here IMO. Wouldn’t it be wonderful if it retained the bonnet, grille and lights. I’m fairly certain its side profile or coupe like side profile is correct, given spy pics of mules.
It will come with the new 6 speed Hyundai auto box and will also have a hybrid version.
Who would have thought that the company that brought us that horrid 1985 Excel would produce the Genesis Sedan, coupe and now (possibly) this stunner?
January 6th, 2009 at 1:27 am
Graham, thank you for your insight. I completely agree with you with respect to the bonnet, grille and lights. Hyundai has really made impressive strides and their lines have gone much cleaner. Future models look very promising..
January 6th, 2009 at 2:02 am
I have heard Hyundai has used the BMW 5-series as one benchmark when making the Genesis and it appears to have worked well. Could they be taking a design cue from the Audi A6 for the Sonata roofline? Link:
http://www.sourcemotors.com/content_images/85_1.jpg
Massage in the newer Hyundai design cues, a hybrid, and perhaps an AWD model down the road and I see a recipe for success. Perhaps not the most original design but still distinctly Hyundai and attractive..
January 6th, 2009 at 8:12 am
I love it. But i am pretty sure the front will change as those fog lights look like they wre photoshopped right out of a Genesis.
January 6th, 2009 at 10:29 am
Hyundai have just released official renderings of the 2010 Equus vi. It looks very substantial and quite different to this chop, especially the grille. Will any of this large car’s design be in the Sonata?

January 14th, 2009 at 6:28 am
I drive a 2008 Elantra GLS Sport, all though i like the car very much after seeing the photo’s of the 2010 Sonata,i know what i’ll be trading the elantra for in 2012!!Keep up the good work Hyundai, you’ve all ready beat the big three[joke] at there own game…are the japanese next??
January 14th, 2009 at 12:05 pm
Well, good to hear you’re staying by Hyundai brand Pete! The 2010 Sonata is expected to be a wonderful vehicle and I see many people trading their used Hyundais for it. Not only elantras, but other Hyundais as well.
January 18th, 2009 at 6:22 pm
I have a 06 Sonata GLS V/6 which is the best car that I ever had. After seeing the 2010 I am looking forward to my next Sonata. Hyundai offers the most “BFTB”….Bang For The Buck!
January 27th, 2009 at 12:30 pm
Yo..! Is this going to be next Sonata..? i going to have one then. Currently driving a 2006 Sonata NF and very satisfied with the car. The YF looks more sporty and wide.. (from the pictures) Side look like Merc CLS.
January 27th, 2009 at 9:52 pm
man if the new sonata looks like this…im sold
February 4th, 2009 at 12:11 pm
WOW~!!
good design!!
how much is it’s??
February 7th, 2009 at 1:00 am
lets hope the price doesn’t go up
February 7th, 2009 at 1:03 am
come to think of it…the tailights i’d say personally are kinda odd looking on this car…or maybe it’s just me today..cuz i before i said the car was nice
February 13th, 2009 at 10:36 am
wow wow wow! and people still have that stigma that Hyundai is still a crappy car company…word to those people…this is the 21st century and it took Hyundai 20 years to perfectly copy the japanese, which took them 40+ years to perfect their vehicles. if this is how the new sonata will look like, it will make the big japanese 3 sweat! i have been following hyundai since they re-did the sonata and they are on a roll! i can’t wait to see the official photos..hopefully the production model looks like this, or close to this! CONGRATULATIONS HYUNDAI!
April 22nd, 2009 at 11:31 pm
I agree, this would be the most beautiful Sonata/ Hyundai yet! I just hope they won’t get rid of the Azera and move the price up to fill the gap. This is a great looking car and if this is gets a hybrid version with the Haldex AWD option I will stand in line for it… I just hope it looks like this! More importantly… that it is priced less than any Accord, Camry or Altima. Like John eluded to, I hope the rear looks as good as the front. Other than the Genesis Sedan and Azera sedan, Hyundai can’t seem to match the elegance of their front with a good rear. Like most car companies this seens to be an afterthought. With cars costing $20K+ this is unfortunate. We will see.
May 20th, 2009 at 6:48 pm
WOW!!!! I lease a 2007 Sonanta that comes up for lease in July 2010. As this is my second consecutive Sonanta, I had decided to get a different car when my lease came up. I knew the Altima is up for a redesign sometime in 2013 so was trying to fill that 2-year gap and get an Altima. I even looked at the Passat, the new TSX….anything but another Sonata.
Until I saw these pictures!!!
Heck….I am totally sold. And I so glad the timing is right for me. This new Sonata looks sexy. I hope they make the interior and the engine to match the beautiful exterior.
BTW….both my 2002 and 2006 Sonatas have given me absolutely no problems.

When will I be able to buy a Sonata that looks like this in Kansas. I’m in the market for a new car, but I would wait for the new design.
September 6th, 2009 at 9:19 pm
EB, if the Sonata is $18,700 now, then I can see the new Sonata base being about $19,700 or $20,700. Sonatas by the way, cost even more than that in other countries already.
I think they might decide to have an ultra Sonata to fill the Azera’s sport. Some kind of special edition Sonata or something. There’s no justification for us to continue with the Azera when it only sells 300 a month man.
September 6th, 2009 at 9:21 pm
In England they are $21,000, and thats after rebates. Without rebates a base model over there is close to $27,000.
September 6th, 2009 at 9:25 pm
It also leaves room for Hyundai to make a Lower spec Genesis Sedan to cover the Azera’s bases as well. Like a Blue Drive Genesis Sedan with a smaller powertrain that gets 30 MPG or something, and has a base price of $27,500.
Its not a far stretch as we already know the Genesis sedan gets 27 MPG.
September 6th, 2009 at 9:31 pm
They Pretty much Genesis’ed up the Sonata it seems. I think a price bump will be due, however the Blue drive model will be cheaper than the Top of the line model.
The Blue drive Sonata will be the cheapest one, according to Hyundais new pricing philosophy.

MICHAEL 1963, FROM ITALY *
November 22nd, 2009 at 4:21 am
I was going to get a 2009 Hyundai Sonota. Now that I’ve seen the 2010 Hyundai Sonota, I will get that one instead!
Keep up the excellent work Hyundai!
December 24th, 2009 at 1:22 am
The new Sonata will be the 2011 model. Hyundai is realizing that they were very smart 2 -3 years ago when they hired away one of Audis best designers. His idea are now coming out with the Genesis, Tucson, and Sonata. They plan to replace their entire line over about 2-3 years time period. The new Sonata has already started production in Alabama and will be for sale in Jan-Feb/2010.
January 9th, 2010 at 4:39 pm
REally nice design
