2010 Hyundai Portico spotted nearly undisguised
New Hyundai Portico, a possible Entourage MPV replacement, spotted nearly undisguised!
The 2010 Hyundai Portico has been spied again. Leftlane managed to take some really nice spy shots of the Hyundai PO (codename) nearly undisguised.
First shown as a concept back in 2006, the 2010 Hyundai Portico will be marketed as a model between Hyundai Santa Fe and Veracruz. On the outside, it seems like Portico will be importing some design cues from the recently revealed Genesis Coupe. In spite of camouflage, its exterior design already looks far more sporty and exciting when compared to relatively boring Veracruz.
According to Leftlane, the PO-rtico will offer seating for six people with seats positioned in two rows only! If at the end, their statement comes true, then Portico should have a huge amount of space in the trunk.
Hyundai first planned to build the Portico in USA, but later decided to produce it in South Korea. The company has not announced when exactly the PO will go on sale, but based on inside rumors we keep getting, the Portico crossover should go on sale in USA by the end of 2009.

This seems like this is the vehicle for the family unit! I hope this is Hyundai’s version of the Minivan/SUV. The only problem with these vehicles is that 90% of them don’t offer real cargo headroom over senseless styling. For example, you roll a small reclined powerchair without dismantling it into the back of an old mid 90’s Dodge Caravan with no modifications to the vehicle. Great for people with disabilities. And this is a very small-managable van! Most vehicles that can do this are full size vans, or modified vehicles which are either gas guzzlers or little ‘busses’. And knowing growing number of people in wheel chairs, scooters and power chairs, they tell me that minivans are much more comfortable to drive and much easier to handle. The only vehicle Hyundai has that is capable of accomodating these people is the Entourage. A nice van but its a KIA Sedona with an H badge… so why would I buy the Hyundai for 2 grand more? This is why the sales on this van is so low. It offers nothing unique in this area between the brands…This would have really sold if Hyundai sold the same vehicle in a short wheel base like they do in Korea.
I like the Portico. It is on my wishlist. It just depends on what it’s capable of transporting.

…Look at the Mazda 5…a unique 4 Cylinder minivan… still selling pretty after over 4 years.

The Mazda5 is not unique. The Kia Rondo slots into the same segment. The only real fundamental difference is that the Mazda5 has sliding doors. Neither sells phenomenally either, although neither Hyundai nor Mazda expected them to. They are both niche vehicles so to speak.

This car is also much larger than Rondo or Mazda5. it’t about the size of Mercedes-Benz+s R-class. The R sells pretty badly and let’s just hope Hyundai Portico will do a better job.
Do you think this vehicle will replace the Entourage in US? I know it will replace a 7 seat minivan, called Trajet, in Europe.

I think it all depends on cargo space and shear size. Americans tend to pack a lot “stuff”. I mean, I would never trade a v8 buick for a v6 unless I could take ALL the contents and people and move it confortably from one vehicle to the other with no compromise. Eventhough sales are bad for the Entourage, it think it’s because they and Kia gave you the same vehicles at different quality and trim levels. And the Kia is cheaper. The Trajet was your old (boxy) minivan.. Korean style. I don’t know how big this vehicle is but, if its only the size of a Sante-Fe, they will loose any future minivan customers to people like Dodge/Chrysler… again! And none of the Soccer Mom’s or car poolers will look to Hyundai for a true bread and butter people mover again. And I thought this thing was only supposed to seat 5 with a double bench 6 passenger option… So I hear.
