2010 Hyundai YF family sedan to replace Sonata
Hyundai’s mid-size Sonata sedan is set to be replaced by a completely revamped family sedan in 2010.
The image above is believed to reveal the shape of the next-generation Hyundai mid-size car that will replace Sonata sedan. Hyundai is developing the successor of its best selling vehicle under the YF project name.
Some time ago we have been told that the YF sedan is about to hit the streets in 2010 as a ‘11 model year, but now, we can confirm that next generation Sonata will debut in May 2009 and will go on sale in October of the same year - (dates refer to Korean market).
The all-new Sonata/i40 is set to be a very different vehicle to its predecessor. Not only it will sport much more exciting exterior design, but it is also expected to be launched as a sedan, as well as a station wagon variant.
Hyundai also announced it is developing a Sonata hybrid and will bring it to the market as early as next year. But before the hybrid powered Sonata goes on sale, Hyundai will show it in the concept form. Sonata concept will make its world premiere this autumn, at the L.A. Auto Show!

I know that some people have said that it’s a rip off of acura tl. They are completely wrong. The side looks similar to mitsusichi evo, and the hyundai badge doesn’t look out of place, which i guess is a plus for hyundai. Come on people, you have to say that looks better than any of its competitor, isn’t it? i.e. accord, camry, and malibu

Looks good. I’ve beena Hyundai loyalist since leaving GM back in ‘99. Now that I’ve grown up this Sonata looks very promising. When they go hybrid I’ll be in the showroom again. Keep up the good work guys…my ‘02 Elantra is going on 200,000 miles and still going strong. Thanks!

Looks a bit like the Mitsubishi Concept ZT sedan from a while back. Actually, a lot like it…

Finally, like my 2002 Sonata, it looks like the designers have put back the sense of ‘presence’ into their classic mid-sized bread and butter car… as John K. put it in the release video of the 2009 model. My only question now is if this gets a make over, no one will want to buy the Azera if they can get one of these for less. Hyundai will need to simultaneously release them both ‘made-over’ or the Azera sales will drop to the floor. Also if these cars keep moving upscale the company will have to start to slot a car below the Accent so they don’t loose costumers by FORGETTING the Bread and butter driver that put them in the black in the first place. If the new buyers can’t get an affordable car here, they WILL go elsewhere… I mean isn’t that how Hyundai got their first costumers anyway, by bringing them a car that is a bargain and a beauty? Any car company can make a beauty, but for years Hyundai has given us beautiful bargains! Thank you for your time!

I think that hyundai is doing everything right to move in the right direction. We will be seeing hyundai in the top 3 before we know it.

Sure, there are probably a number of design cues that we’ve seen before but overall looks to come into one very tight package. Very impressive if this is the way they are headed. Definitely agree with Mr Bell Jr. above and his ‘presence’ statement. Thanks for the great post!

Umm Brian, Hyundai owns like 35% of Mitsubushi. The Eclipse is just a highly modified Tiburon, just like the Lancer is just a Highly Modified Elantra.

I don’t think Hyundai owns Mitsu, in the past it was that Mitsu. owned Hyundai, but then they sold out their share.

I’ve got a 2004 Sonata, which is a very good car (well finished, comfortable, well equipped and reliable). If the new 2010 Sonata is not too large, it could be my next car - because of the size of my garage - . As a matter of fact, this car is very nice and, in France, it will certainly be equipped with the excellent 2.0 or 2.2 liter Diesel engine, that gives an interesting powerful and a big torque. I am looking forward to see this new Sonata (called i40 in Europe).

Hi there Bougnazal!
I’m also hoping Hyundai doesn’t enlarges the 2010 Sonata to much. It’s size is already above average for it’s class and rather than seeing Hyundai extending the size, I would want to see it shedding some kilograms and make it weigh less!
As you already said, most probably, Sonata will feature both new diesel engines generation 185 and 200 hp! Since many competitors offer smaller diesels in Europe, Sonata could also get a diesel engine generating 150hp.
Some rumours also suggest we are gonna see the wagon variant!
