Hyundai Motor America announced it will cut production of the Santa Fe in its Montgomery manufacturing plant due to the slowing SUV sales in Unites States.

Robert Burns, companys spokesman, told to the press that Hyundai will cut production of the Santa Fe by 40.000 units and replace it by additional Sonata models, which has recently seen an increase in sales. Because of the switch, there will be no need to cut workers or shifts, which other area automakers have had to do, he said.

As consumers shift to smaller and more fuel efficient cars, sedans such as Sonata benefit from higher sales. Compared to last year, Sonata sales jumped 12% to 16, 875 units in June 2008. Cumulative sales of Hyundai Sonata in the first six months reached 65,927 units.
