Hyundai has announced it has successfully developed new small engine which delivers class leading fuel economy and lowest CO2 output among engines of the same displacement. The new Kappa engine has been developed over a period of 48 months and will be first installed in Hyundai i10.

The new Kappa engine will also find its way into the upcoming Hyundai i20 due to be introduced at Paris Auto Show in October.

The Kappa engine adopts a number of weight and friction reducing innovations to achieve the best in class numbers in terms of power, torque and fuel consumption. While the new engine delivers fuel economy rating of 5.0L/100km (47 mpg), it also runs cleaner and achieves EURO–4 emissions compliancy. It produces 119g/km of Co2, which is far less than it’s main competitors coming from Fiat (Panda) and Renault (Twingo).

Kappa puts out 77.8ps at 6000rpm and best in class peak torque, which is rated at 12.0kg.m per 4000rpm. That should be enough power to ensure an outstanding acceleration and driving enjoyment in the small and light-weight i10 model. [Source: Hyundai]
