Hyundais latest addition to its European line-up, the i20 scored big in the latest EuroNCAP crash tests. The all-new Hyundai i20 has joined the group of six cars that have been smashed against the wall by EuroNCAP just recently and it was one of five cars that received the highest possible safety rating: 5 stars!
Among six tested vehicles only Suzuki Alto failed to get the five star safety rating while other other five models including Audi Q5, Kia Soul, Hyundai i20, Honda Jazz and Peugeot 3008 all received 5 stars.
The i20 is Hyundais second vehicle that received the five stars at EuroNCAP tests. The first Hyundai vehicle with 5 stars at EuroNCAP crash tests was Hyundai i30. The model received the highest safety rating after its second try, when Hyundai made some safety upgrades to the car. At its first attempt, the i30 got only four stars, which is less than its competition.
Back to the i20 crash test results… The EuroNCAP organization tested the 2009 five-door i20 equipped with driver and co-driver frontal airbags, side head airbags, side body airbags, front seatbelt pretensioners and front seatbelt load limiters.
By frontal impact, the passenger compartment of the i20 hatchback remained stable. In the side barrier test, i20 scored maximum points, while in the side pole impact the vehicle provided an adequate protection. Based on a dummy readings, Hyundai i20 won maximum points for its protection of the 1 year old child in the side and frontal crash tests.
The 2009 Hyundai i20 has been rated at 88 percent for adult protection, 64 percent for pedestrian protection and 83 and 86 protection for child protection and safety assist.
With the new i20, Hyundai has made a major step forward in terms of safety. Previous B-segment car from Hyundai, the Getz has only got four stars at EuroNCAP crash tests, while most of its main rivals already received the 5 star safety ratings.
Maximum number of “safety” stars that a vehicle can achieve at the EuroNCAP crash test is a recognition of Hyundais commitment to providing customers the cars that offer top-class safety and quality.
In addition to Hyundai i20, there were also two other B-segment cars tested. The 2010 Kia Soul and Honda Jazz both received high marks for their safety and that discards the theory that says that small cars dont offer a good enough occupant protection.
