Hyundai Launches 2016 ix20 MPV Facelift In Geneva – Changes
The refreshed version of the Hyundai ix20 small MPV was officially unveiled at the Geneva Motor Show.
This version takes the popular characteristics of the outgoing i20 model and takes them to all new levels, with styling, technology, and the engine line-up all being improved.
The versatility and roominess that was a staple of the old model is still there in the new one, but the upgrades to the design and technology mean that the new ix20 will appeal to a wider European crowd.
New ix20 Boasts Revised Exterior
The new look begins up front with the addition of bi-function projector headlamps and a new hexagonal grille, which is now a standard Hyundai design feature.
There are actually a pair of different finishes (mesh or chrome) to choose from.
Also new are LED combination lamps in back, a new 15-inch wheel cover design, and the choice of 16- or 17-inch alloy wheels.
2016 ix20 Interior Enhancements
The interior of the new Hyundai ix20 features the same space and versatility that buyers have become used to.
The 2615 mm wheelbase is considered to be long for the class, and that, combined with the 1600 mm high roofline, means ample leg, shoulder, and head space on the inside.
The space is actually more in line with what you would find on a C-segment vehicle. The cabin seems even more spacious once the dual-panel panoramic glass sunroof is opened up.
The ix20 also leads the way in terms of cargo space, delivering 440 liters with the seats up. That can be increased to a cavernous 1486 liters by stowing away the dive and fold rear seats. The steering wheel is now heated, and a cool new audio system has been added.
The system offers iPod connectivity and integrated My Music with 1GB of storage. Bluetooth connectivity is also included, as are USB and AUX ports. Standard safety features include ABS, EBD, ESP, and 6 airbags.
9 Exterior Colors
Cloth upholstery is offered in a pair of interior colors (Black and Two-Tone Beige), while there are 9 exterior colors to choose from.
Polar White is the lone solid color.
There are also 6 metallic colors (Platinum Silver, Micron Grey, Ultimate Red, Ash Blue, Ara Blue, Ruby Wine), and 2 pearl colors Phantom Black and Thunder Grey.
Engine, Transmission Upgrades
The new ix20 is a vehicle that aims to add a new level of competition to the small MPV segment.
The addition of a new 6-speed automatic transmission, as well as boosts in power and torque levels helps. The Euro6 compliant engine line-up is now better on fuel consumption and emissions.
A boost in torque is delivered by a pair of diesel engines – 240 Nm (1.4-litre) and 260 Nm (1.6-litre) – from just 1,500 rpm.
Efficiency has been boosted on the 1.4- and 1.6 liter petrol Gamma engines, with the 1.6-liter now available with a 6-speed automatic in place of the old 4-speed.
That all adds up to an improvement in overall fuel economy.
ISG Start / Stop – Blue Drive
Hyundai has eco-friendliness covered, too, as the new ix20 Blue Drive features Integrated Stop & Go (ISG), low rolling-resistance tires, an alternator management system (AMS) and a drag-reducing ‘active air flap’ in the front grille.
Hyundai ix20 awards: In the 5 years that the ix20 has been on the market, it has sold close to 200,000 units in Europe, whilst also winning a host of awards that include the ‘Family Car of the Year’ award in Belgium and ‘Best Supermini MPV’ at the UK’s Auto Express awards.
