Hyundai says NO to Genesis Coupe convertible

Hyundai Genesis Coupe cabriolet saga continues…

Unfortunately, Hyundai Motor America has killed the speculations and rumors about bringing a convertible version of the 2010 Hyundai Genesis Coupe to the market!

Mr. Miles Johnson, manager of product public relations at Hyundai Motor America, has denied rumors stating that Hyundai has proceded with developing a cabrio variant of rear-wheel-drive Genesis Coupe.

He told us that the all-new Genesis Coupe wasn’t developed to be a convertible from the ground up. “It was developed as a global car. The wind in your hair doesn’t work in Korea, and there’s not enough volume in the U.S.” said Miles.

According to his statement, there are no plans for any future Hyundai convertibles, although some sources indicate that the use of retractable hardtops has already been slated for some future Hyundai products.

Too bad Hyundai Genesis Coupe will never become a production reality! Judging from these great (photoshoped) photos and response from various automotive media, Hyundai could have made a great-looking convertible!

Wow! You have GOT to be kidding me! That is TRULY a shame… This car is BEAUTIFUL! This would have been the only Hyundai that my wife would have begged to own… And it’s not a testosterone ladened FORD or Chevy ..or a status symbol either… I guess no matter how well these cars do… It’s still a Korean company. Gotta love’um though. Maybe a retractatable hardtop you say? Please? It reminds me of the new Infiniti G convertable. Or the Lexus SC. Now I see why that california designer left. Interesting. I get it. Wow.

By the way admin… any year end sales numbers for the US? How did Hyundai wind up?

As much as I hate to admit it, the decision to say NO to the Coupe convertible is absolutely the correct one. I think this rendering looks fantastic but the bottom line is that there is still a relatively small market worldwide for such vehicles as a percentage of overall sales. It costs more, detracts from handling and overall performance.

Yes, I am sure they would take some sales away from the Mustang, Solara convertible and some others but still, at the end of the day, the company must devote resources to their bread and butter products.

For 2009, they apparently have 3 more products in the pipeline: The Equus, The Tuscon and Sonata. These are more important than a convertible version of the Coupe convertible in my opinion as it will cater to a very small audience. With economic conditions the way they are, fewer will have money to spend on niche market drop tops. A very wise allocation of limited resources if you ask me.. Maybe a release later may be possible but anything within the next 1-3 years would not be a wise decision..

Yeah. I guess you’re right. Woulda’ been cool though. :)

Hi, we have had a few hyundai cars in our family. Mine is 7 years old this year and have had no trouble with it at all. I was hoping this convertible was going to be available, I would love to have had one. Any chance of the prototype going cheap?

  8. HyundaiSmoke says:

Hyundai still might have to do a temporary V8 Model, until they can develop a fuel efficient V6 with V8 Performance to shut the haters up, also to shut the millions we pissed off by not having the V8.

Then again we do have a Lambda V6 Turbo with 355 HP that is in development now, and will debut at the SEMA show.

Then we can do convertibles all day Linda.

  9. HyundaiSmoke says:

We truly cant provide the V8 Performance with V8s everywhere, as we have become an Cheap “Eco Luxury” alternative to Lexus.

Think about it, Lexus now has cars the size of an Accent with a V8. That’s crazy aint it??!!! Hyundai wants to provide the same kit for a lot cheaper and with 4 and 6 Cylinder engines.

Wow! You have GOT to be kidding me! That is TRULY a shame… we have Camaro coming and it will be WAY TOO expenseive and these guys somehow think, that it wouldnt sell here? HUH, what are they smokin, global car “wha??”. You already HAVE coupes, SUVs, sedans in THAT global stable?? Hyundai you need to find your niche segment and MOVE in before VW and Infiniti does. Simply stated: Yes –This car is BEAUTIFUL! This would have been the only Hyundai that my wife would have begged to own… And it’s not a testosterone ladened FORD or Chevy ..or a status symbol either… I guess no matter how well these cars do… It’s still a Korean company. Convertibles are not a small segment ONCE the Sebring disappears, there will be no one to fill it with a car that looks this good. Oh, and Sebring is killed by 2011 3Q per reports this week. Just as the Cali designer left. YEah, I see all the writing now. You could have put an aluminum retractible top on this and released BEFORE the Camaro-but now you will be too late.

  11. pandora55 says:

Can u imagine…Hyundai Genesis Coupe with Brembo brakes, possibly a modified catback exhaust and throw a top on it…I will take one for 15k less than a comparably equipped “upcharged” V6 Camaro

Make hay while the sun shines, in this economy with some many US makers on the ropes, NOW IS the time to build niche cars. One report says Americans will buy more various models for their garage with good mileage, at a reasonable price. Than buy one expensive SUV or sedan nowawdays, and new flash, it wont be some hyped and overpriced,crap-initial qualitity American made vehicle. With Honda(bad qrtr)-(ditto Toyota)floundering Hyundai get with it and ramp up while you have a foot in the door. Do you need an econnmist on your board to figure this out??

Hey whats up?. I happened upon your site while I was looking for something else. While I do not agree with some of what you posted we do have almost the same viewpoints for the most part. I’ve bookmarked your website and will visit again in the near future to see what you’re writing about in 2010!

  14. Jack Donelan says:

Yo: Loved the profile. My problem is I want SMALLER !Micro sized, sufficient power, something for fun as well as transportation.Copen sized with some attention paid to logical entry and exit. You’ve come a long way and I commend your direction.PLEASE make something a hair smaller than the the orig Miata.

  15. Ivan Dixon says:

that’s too bad.. I was considering this versus the Infinity G37 Convertiable coupe. Looks like Infinity wins my $$.
which kind of sucks.. thought i would try to save a few $$..but oh well.

  16. Dan says:

I think it looks awsome ! it really looks like the infinity ,I own a m3 convertable and love it ,even thow they r a little bit jittery compared to the coupes. I would consider buying the genesis if it went topless,as my other favorite is the infinity G37 and this would cost alot less ….Hyundai go for it !!!
