Hyundai Motor America announces record May sales of 59.214 units, up 21 percent compared with the same record-breaking period last year.

The fastest-growing carmaker on the planet sold nearly 60.000 units in the States last month. Hyundai’s sales-to-date are up almost 30 percent as the carmaker is doing much better in the United States than ever before.

Sales figures for the brand continued to climb through the month thanks to strong performance of new Sonata and Elantra sedans that made up most of the total sales for the month of May 2011.

With 22.754 and 20.006 units sold, bot cars remained the top-selling nameplates for Hyundai in the USA. Demand for the aged Hyundai Santa Fe SUV remained quite high last month (6.671 units sold last month ). The all-new Tucson crossover and Genesis luxury sedan recorded sales of 4.363 and 2.769, respectively.

Hardly suprising as range has great designs in there. Santa Fe selling well and if they nail the new one when it comes out on looks then Hyundai will further advance to being number 1 (within 5-7yrs I reckon). Truly…..line up some of their cars with others and most if not all others look average and ugly

  2. Derrick G says:

Hyundai has 2 cars (Sonata and Elantra) in the top 10 for May in the U.S. In Canada, Hyundai (not Hyundai-Kia, but just Hyundai, though Kia moved ahead of all other imports but Toyota and Honda) beat all other imports, including all of Toyota’s offerings combined.

And yet here in the UK public opinion of Hyundai is still somewhere like it was in the US two or three years ago. I was talking a salesman at my local Hyundai dealer the other day and he said he couldn’t see how the Sonata could ever sell, noting that the last model wasn’t a huge success. I had to point out to *him* that whereas the last model wasn’t the best car in its class in any respect, the new one is like best in class in every respect. To be fair he’s right that the Sonata wouldn’t sell well here for other reasons (wrong kind of car) but still, even he seemed to have the same apologetic opinion of the brand that I still see everywhere else here. What Hyundai needs here is some performance halo versions of its European models (i20, i30, ix35, veloster). Introducing the veloster with only a non-turbo 1.6 at launch has ensured it was large
y dismissed by most of the UK motoring press, for example.

Yes The veloster should have somewhat of a 2.0 T Mitusbishi EVO MR engine with at least 400 hp to convince UK!

  5. Derrick G says:

Is the UK not getting the i40? Shouldn’t it be more suited for the UK market?

  6. Heywood Joblome says:

HMA has determined after extended market research that the US is anxiously awaiting the arrival of the longly anticipated base model of the 2012 Hyundai Accent! I`m sure there is a Wait List already! Damn, I forgot to add my name to that list, oh well…..

I just bought a Hyundai Elantra GSL 3 days ago. I love my Elantra, interior & trunk size are awesome, rides like a dream for a compact/midsize car. I have my great gas mileage and bluetooth assets and sooo much more!! I am a very proud Hyundai Elantra owner!!

PS I did lower my Hyundai Elantra price by $500.00 off the MSRP!! :o )

  8. Ash says:

Derrick G: Yup we get the i40 instead of the sonata

  9. Ash says:

    Debbie: Sweet! Enjoy

  10. HyundaiSmoke says:

Ash, the UK is almost hopeless with their Hyundai hate, but we will crack that market hard. They WILL trade in those unreliable VWs’ and Audis’ for Superior Hyundais’ and KIAs’.

The UK will submit to THE HYUNDAI.

Thanks Hyundai Blog for providing good stories over the years.
