Hyundai Elantra sales soar, Sonata outsells Nissan Altima and Ford Fusion sedans
Hyundai Elantra sales hit new record-high, Sonata outsells Nissan Altima and Ford Fusion!
Hyundai today revealed its sales numbers for the month of June 2010. The South Korean carmaker sold 51.205 new cars and SUVs in June, a 35 percent increase compared with the same month a year ago. Year to date Hyundai sales are up as well. The automaker sold 25 percent more new vehicles this year as compared to 2009 and is on target to eclipse 500.000 units of annual volume for the first time ever.
The all-new Sonata saw its sales soar 49 percent last month, while the 2010 Tucson crossover experienced a 207 percent increase in sales. According to Hyundai, the 2011 Sonatas are selling as fast as the company’s Montgomery manufacturing plant can produce them. During June 2010, the popular mid-size sedan from Hyundai has also been the third-best selling mid-size sedan in the country in retail sales. It has outsold vehicles such as Nissan Altima, Chevy Malibu and Ford Fusion.
Dave Zuchowski, Hyundai Motor America’s vice president of national sales commented the automakers recent sales success: “June was a very tumultuous month for the industry with declining consumer confidence, housing market instability, and unexpected financial market volatility. In the face of this adversity, we were encouraged that Hyundai continued to outperform the market and seize additional market share gains.”

The Sonata beat the Fusion only in retail sales; Ford moved 641 more Fusions total. Considering Hyundai says their fleet sales are down 21%, that’s still big news.
Not only did the Sonata beat the Altima outright, as a group H-K outsold Nissan NA in the US for June. I think that’s a first for that. Hyundai-Kia was the only major group that I’ve seen so far to have an increase over May of this year too (both Hyundai and Kia recorded increases).

I love it! All the haters on thetruthaboutcars.com are dying inside. Two straight years of strong growth and multiple indexes showing high quality.
My personal car pick of the year for bang for buck, MPG, ride quality, and aesthetics is the 2011 Sonata hands down.

I think HYundai-Kia outsold Nissan NA a few times already. Hyundai is definitley on the up and up!

The Lies About Cars, Jack.
They used to be super slanderous of our products in the past. I hold a grudge with them for the past, but I cant be too forceful about it as I do see an improvement on the way our products are now being covered over there. They are still by far the worst, but at least they arent ad-hominem and over the top like they used to be.
Its still not a real Journalistic site if they take down oppositional comments “Flaming”.
But who cares what they think, their site is declining while our sales are increasing. We get the last laugh.

Has hyundai’s originality run come to and end…check out the pictures of the refreshed genesis…the shifter is a blatant rip off of the new bmw shifters, anyone who says otherwise is crazy. Don’t go calling me a hater, or try telling me that lexus did this to mercedes and onwards…i kno it…and i actually like the genesis, but this is kinda getting out of hand

Chris, can you calm down with your “copy” crap. I see this nonsense comment everywhere and it’s sheer propaganda. You want “originaliy?” go buy a Ford Model T.
All manufacturer’s mix and match slices of designs from one another. It’s just that some are more clever at disguising them than some are.
If you don’t like a design or a look just be honest enough to say so. Just quit the belly aching and bitchin’ already about who’s rippin’ off whom. It’s old and shows your immaturity.

Hyundai makes great cars for the money. I am all about how much quality I get for my buck and Hyundai still wins that game, for like 6 years in a row now.
This new Sonata is not very heavily incentized either, which makes me think they are gonna lose that quality to value ration that they have had. Before when I wouldn’t have considered a Fusion, Accord, or Camry, Hyundais increasing prices are making me look at them when before I would only have considered Hyundai.
July 5th, 2010 at 6:09 pm
Steve, glad to see Hyundai is holding their pricing without watering it down with rebates that weakens their resale. If this has you looking at the other competition all the better!
Guess what? People who use to avoid Hyundai are now forced to add Hyundai to their comparison shopping list because their value proposition, quality and refinement on a car like the wildly successful Sonata is hard to ignore because they are now comparable to the best out there.
Time to celebrate Hyundai’s emergence as a big time player.
July 5th, 2010 at 8:12 pm
Steve, I think you need to calm down, the shifter is practically taken out of a bimmer, name one other brand that does it other than bmw. The shape the look, everything about that shifter is the same. The car takes cues from other big luxury makes and works them all together nicely ,and i am completely fine with that.Your failure to admit that the shifter design is next to a carbon copy shows your immaturity.
July 6th, 2010 at 2:19 am
Calm down, Chris at least Hyundai is trying. At least Hyundai doesnt keep the same damm design for 10-15 years. At least Hyundai doesnt chagre $70K for a car that looks like an overpriced Toyota like BMW does.
Who cares what they think. Hyundai is trying to get its own upper crust luxury look. If you call it copying then its whatever. All I know is, Hyundai will continue to keep on regardless of what haters and doubters say like they always have been.
Steve, its evolution my friend. The days of big incentives are coming to an end, and then after that the days of higher prices will come. I hope that more people will look at KIA than Ford or Honda as an alternative to Hyundai.
Id rather have people buy a KIA anyday than anything else. That way at least the mothership gets the money.
The problem is that peopel see the Hyundai name and they still want to assume they are a lower priced alternative to Honda and Toyota. Those days are over. Hyundai-a lower priced alternative to Acura and Lexus is more like it, and unlike Lexus and Acura HYUNDAI ACTUALLY IS RESPONSIBLE ENOUGH TO HAVE SMALL CARS!!!
Hyundai is a company that wants to grow for national prestige and pride too, and they cant stay as this bargain dollar store brand to the Toyotas and Hondas of the world forever you know. That’s why I still think Equus should have been named Prestige, but that’s a whole other story.
Hyundai cant hold back progress because we want lower priced cars, or because the haters in Japan, Germany, and America want a company they can look down upon, or because people in America, Germany and Japan are scared of Hyundai’s progress and dont want Hyundai to work to become this global Luxury brand.
This isnt just about cars its about life too.
July 6th, 2010 at 3:29 am
Hah. When I was talking about haters on TTAC, I was talking about the people posting comments, but I will agree that some of their reviewers are blatantly biased in favor of Toyota/Honda and German carmakers. But the posters are people who see solid 30% year on year growth and quality indexes from JD Powers and Consumer reports showing solid improvement over the past 20 years. The truth is undeniable and thus inconvenient. But still truth.
Hyundai will only keep advancing further for at least another 5 years. They’re on a roll with sales and innovation. They’ve now become a leader in getting rid of the V6 in the Sonata and pumping out more MPGs and HP. I expect to see more surprise developments years down the road.
July 6th, 2010 at 3:33 am
Well I agree with Chris in that the shifter is probably too similar for comfort. Hyundai could have come up with their own unique design at least. I love both Hyundai and Kia but would have preferred them to stay away from the BMW design.
July 6th, 2010 at 8:31 am
Why…..you cannot copyright a gear shifter, or wheels, or steering wheel, or bonnet, or windscreen, etc, etc. Sure they all try to make individual cars unique, but reality is it “aint illegal”! So get over you over the top paronoia and smell reality!
July 6th, 2010 at 8:35 am
It aint identical is it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Similar yes. Same well NO! So why go over the top! What is your next silly conclusion….the wheels are a copy (they are round you know like on all cars and the odds are the more cars are released since day one of car industry starting means sooner or later a newer car will mimic or look similar to a previous different older car)!
July 6th, 2010 at 12:36 pm
That shifter is something very distinct and unique to BWM;s…almost like their “trademark” if you will. Hyundai’s version admittedly looks like a carbon copy of it. I’m probably a bigger Hyundai fan than you realize and am simply stating my opinion. If you can’t handle it, leave the site.
July 6th, 2010 at 12:43 pm
Get real and get over yourself! If your intellect was a rubberband, you would struggle to fit around a canaries tiny leg!
July 6th, 2010 at 12:47 pm
A car is a mish mash of design philosophies that sooner or later cross paths with anyone of a myriad of car makers around the globe. Do BMW own copyright to the gear shifter – NO they don’t and cannot. Thus its open slather. Its not illegal…so not an issue. With simple people it appears an issue in there eyes hey! Its only self centred ignorant people who draw the weak conclusion!
July 6th, 2010 at 12:58 pm
Christopher, I didn’t say anything about the shifter LOL. Anyway, I don’t think they are copying and even if they are who cares if the vehicles are this good!
I know this is probably a world wide forum and my intention is not to go off topic, but why cant Hyundai and other asian makers get the get diesels and E85 vehicles here. Americans would catch on to good diesel engines if they would just make them. Hyundai does it everywhere else for pete’s sake. And if I want a good sedan that runs on E85 which is abundant in the midwestern USA, my only choices are Fusion or Impala….Sad, that awesome 2011 sonata and it’s GDI 2.4L would lend itself well to ethanol.
July 6th, 2010 at 3:26 pm
Steve, nice post. Let me address a couple things you mentioned in your post:
Regarding the BMW shifter, copy gate issue? I agree with you, I don’t think they are copying either. Now,there is some similarities no doubt, just as there is with the center console knob, but in my opinion, Hyundai improved on it.
The other thing I am going to mention now is your rant about why Hyundai and other Asian brands don’t build engines with E85? or Diesels? Well look at E85, corn based fuel is not sustainable, is not fuel efficient in MPG and cost more using fossil fuels to produce. Add to the fact that we don’t have the infrastructure to distribute and then the added cost at the pump. Fail!
Diesel. The thing is Diesel fuels may offer some hope but once again you have the added cost of the engines to the price of the average car at roughly $2k-3k, so a car priced at $15k will now be priced at up to $18k. With our economy still in the tank, that is not a good option. Also distribution becomes a major factor when you consider only one out of every 20 pumps in a service station has diesel, see where we’re going here? The price to convert fuel stations to diesel nationwide will be reflected at the pump. Fail!
The answer is we need to make genuine commitment to start investing now in R&D for the future fuels of tomorrow. The good news is we’re beginning to see automakers respond by offering hybrids and possibly Hydrogen in the future.
July 6th, 2010 at 5:41 pm
I agree I am for future fuels, such as electric and Hydrogen – When I can go 300 miles on a fill yeah bring them on.
But – within 2 miles of my home I have several E85 stations, several diesel, and several gasoline. Maybe I’m just in a good spot. I just want fuel choice. Alcohol will soon be made from many things, not corn, and has far more energy output per input then refining petroleum.
Diesel is much more efficient and now cleaner than ever with the common rail engines.
I mean everyone has their thoughts on pros and cons of liquid fuels and engines, I just wish that I could have my new Sonata AND fuel choice, because I really dig what Hyundai has going on with their product these days, and I think they have turned into a great COMPANY besides. But here in the USA if I want one all I can run is gasoline, which is a downer. if I were in Europe I could get a diesel Sonata. If I were in Brazil I could get one that ran on alcohol LOL whant the same choices with my Hyundai’s here too.
July 6th, 2010 at 5:58 pm
Well, i don’t know about everyone else, but i think this face-lifted genesis seems to be a decent upgrade. I’m going to have to side with Chris and JG on the fact that the shifter is too close for comfort, but for half the price and just as good if not better a car, i could really care less…oh and chris i think you meant mobis21 not steve.

Back to sales, Hyundai again beat Honda in Canada in June. Furthermore, Hyundai-Kia as a group beat Toyota, including Lexus. In fact, they came with 1,089 units of beating Chrysler. Both Honda and Toyota were down (though Lexus eked out a 27 unit gain) while Hyundai and Kia were both up.
July 12th, 2010 at 10:25 pm
Please… the Germans who are mechanical engineers and not so much electrical engineers stole and copied Lexus’ electronics know how(just look at how much the gauges changed) and other design motifs. The fact is manufacturers are copying and borrowing ideas from each other all the time.. some less than others but it’s going on at all manufacturers.. please don’t anyone tell you otherwise..
