Hyundai’s brand-new 1.6 T-GDI turbo engine generates 208 horsepower.
Hyundai Motor Company expands its “turbo” engine family with the introduction of a brand-new 1.6L T-GDI turbo engine. Based on the existing 1.6L GDI four-cylinder engine, which is currently propels the 2012 Hyundai Accent and the Korean-market Hyundai Avante, the unit boasts a twin-scroll turbocharger which significantly improves the engine response and performance.
At the same time the turbocharger increases efficiency at low engine speeds, which increases combustion efficiency and lowers emissions. The new turbo unit also features gasoline direct injection technology which further contributes to improved fuel efficiency and lower emissions.
The 1.6L turbocharged four-cylinder engine generates 208 horsepower at 6,000 rpm and maximum torque of 27 kgm, which is available from 1.600 rpm to 5.000 rpm.
According to Hyundai, the all-new 1.6L T-GDI turbo engine will be available in the new Hyundai Veloster sports coupe starting from 2012, while later it will also appear in the upcoming 2013 Hyundai ix30 and next-generation Kia cee’d.
The new 1.6L turbocharged gasoline direct-injection engine is part of the carmaker’s new initiative called Blue Drive which aims to lead the automobile industry in fuel efficiency and sustainability. Expect to hear more details about the new turbo unit at the 2011 New York Auto Show!

I’m really looking forward to test driving a Veloster with this engine next year. This engine will truly make the Veloster live up to its name. Hell, I can’t even wait to test drive the regular Veloster this summer.
This 1.6 GDI Turbo will later be found in the Veloster turbo , upcoming Elantra coupe turbo, and upcoming Kia Forte Koup Turbo.
Definitely a compelling enhancement for Veloster. This should generate enough excitement for this little 3 door sportster.
This will be a really fun little car! Honda is going to get owned with their cheese wedge. Test drive for this is a must
I was already pretty much set on getting the Veloster as my next car. Now I have to wait another year, because that’s the one I want.
the more and more I see pix-yet no mentioning on Hyundai’s website I’m at a loss. The new Elantra and Accent models are already on their website and made my head spin. I like this little car but will probably end up adding the new Civic coupe to my garage-but it would have been interesting and more functional than my CRZ….
I think Hyundai is definately on point with this-but not really sure Honda junkies are gonna give it consideration…
Dang. I’m pretty sure this is my next car. Was hoping to get one this summer but now it seems I’m going to have to wait until next year to get the turbo instead.
IM A HONDA NUT! BUT HONDA DONT HAVE SHIT TO OFFER ME SO IT LOOKS LIKE IM GOING FOR THE VELOSTER TURBO! HELL YEAH!
Im a HONDA fan for over 25yrs, but they dont have shit to offer so yes I will be getting a turbo car and this is a good choice!
HYUNDAI IS GETTING CREATIVE LIKE HONDA USE TO BE. BUT HONDA HAS LOST THEIR MOJO! “BAD DECISION MAKING ON THEIR PART”
OR NOT LISTENING TO WHAT THEIR SUPPORTERS WANT!
SO HONDA HAS LOST ME AS A CUSTOMER! HYUNDAI HAS JUST GAINED ONE!
The turbo 1.6 GDI will be a sweet little engine in a light car like the Veloster or even the Elantra coupe. Would be interesting if Hyundai is the one that beats the Mazdaspeed3 in performance not to mention efficiency. Hyundai’s 2 liter turbo GDI is equivalent in performance to the Mazda’s 2.3 turbo DISI engine, but with superior efficiency. The 1.6 turbo GDI should offer even better mileage and if Hyundai nails down the performance of the Veloster, the Mazdaspeed is in real trouble. Honda and Toyota don’t even offer anything remotely competitive to the Veloster and nothing coming down the pipeline either.
Unfortunately, I can’t wait for the turbo Veloster. I’ve just purchased a 2012 Accent SE. We’ll see what Hyundai is offering in a few years when I am ready to move on to another vehicle.
Or maybe I might have to trade in the Accent for one of those turbo Velosters. The temptation might just be too much.
Its amazing! Im a japanesse car enthusiast, but when i heared about this monster, I have second thought shifting korean cars… =)
Al’s comment on new Hyundai Veloster re-posted here: http://www.hyundai-blog.com/index.php/2011/09/26/review-black-hyundai-veloster-with-6-speed-manual-transmission/
Test drove it today and I am hats off to Hyundai engineers..this car will take Hyundai to the next level pending reliability which will take 5 years to fully assess its capability…will wait out the Turbo model
i am a dodge man.thats all i have ever driven and owned.but this past weekend i test drove the veloster and i went ahead and traded my ram in for it.i would have to say it was the best buy i have ever done.cant wait for parts to come out for them.anyone have an idea of when that might be
As a long term Hyundai owner (we currently own two, one of which is our fourth Hyundai) I have to ask:
Will an OEM turbo kit be made available to Accent owners with the 1.6 engine?
If not, you guys should probably consider it as part of your tuner friendly image and to make the Accent more competitive with the new Chevy Sonic.
So far I’ve looked at the Honda – CR-Z (I need a small back seat for the dog) the Chevy – Sonic (so ugly) the Nissan – Juke (no arm rest). Only two real chioces left The Voloster (which I’ve been in). I totally love it and I want the turbo! I still have to look at the Toyoda Aqua (still waiting for it). I’ll use my 4×4 Ford 150 for winter driving, and the gas money I save will pay for the a great fun car for the longer drives in good weather.
Wow I hope Hyundai does offer the turbo as an assessory! I have a 2012 Kia Soul with the 1.6 GDi and would love to have this turbo on it! It’d blow the 2.0 model away!!!
