Hyundai Unveils Genesis New York Concept Car In The U.S.
Genesis New York concept car officially unveiled!
When Hyundai announced the official launch of the Genesis sub-brand, they made it clear that they were serious about the luxury market.
People were impressed when they saw the G90 flagship sedan at the Detroit Auto Show, but they are going to be really blown away when they see the Genesis concept that is on display at the New York International Auto Show.
The concept vehicle they have on display is called the New York Concept, and it is a preview of the upcoming G70, which is the vehicle that Genesis believes will give the BMW 3-series a run for its money.
It is safe to say that not all aspects of the concept model will make it into the production Genesis G70, but there is enough there to get us excited about what’s coming.
Genesis New York hybrid sedan
While the hybrid powertrain in the model still remains a little bit of a mystery, we do know that the gas engine part of it is a 2.0L GDI.
That unit cranks out an impressive 242 horsepower and 262 lb.-ft. of torque when mated to an 8-speed automatic transmission.
With the concept model, it’s not really what’s under the hood that people are paying attention to.
Futuristic interior layout
The real focus here is the stunning interior design of the vehicle, which includes a 21-inch LG touchscreen in the cabin.
The touchscreen is big, but it is used for a lot of stuff, such as the navigation system, instrument panel, and infotainment system. This is not something that would ever make it into a production model, but it certainly looks cool in the concept.
The seats and door panels are covered in incredibly soft leather, and the rear seats are split in two by a large center console, which again would not likely show up in the production G70 sedan.
You could literally spend hours in the cabin looking at all the cool bells and whistles, but that would mean taking time away from what is an incredibly stunning exterior design on this vehicle.
New Genesis design language
Genesis describes the exterior look as “refined athletic elegance,” but we just call it beautiful. The grille with its recessed air intakes looks fantastic, and we particularly like that the door handles are flush with the body.
The lighting set-up is also as good as it gets, although the thin headlights are not something that would probably be approved for production.
Genesis are still very new to the luxury game, and they have an uphill battle ahead of them in regards stealing some of the luxury market from the Germans and Japanese.
What the New York Concept clearly shows, though, is that they are very much up for the fight, and that their best is probably still yet to come.
We can’t wait until our favorite features from the concept start to show up on the Genesis G70 production model.
Of particular interest to us, and probably to you, too, is that mystery Genesis New York hybrid-electric powertrain that is being hinted at.
It is that which is likely to be incredibly important, because luxury cars are about more than just looking good; they have to be able to deliver a driving experience that matches the outstanding luxury of the design.
