Canada: Hyundai Accent 2012 engine, dimensions, fuel economy information
Hyundai Auto Canada introduced the all-new 2012 Accent today at the Montreal International Auto Show. Available in four-door and five-door formats, Accent redefines expectations in the subcompact category by offering the company’s attractive “Fluidic Sculpture” design, best-in-class fuel economy, and a full complement of standard safety features.
Despite surprising technology and a significant increase in safety features, Hyundai will hold the line on pricing from the prior generation to continue delivering unmistakable value to customers.
The 2012 Accent’s all-aluminum 1.6L Gamma 4-cylinder engine utilizes the latest engine technology to deliver a class-leading 138 horsepower and 123 lb-ft of torque and an estimated best-in-class 4.7 L/100 km highway fuel economy rating.
The engine’s most notable feature is its use of Gasoline Direct Injection (GDI), a first for the subcompact category. By precisely controlling the injection of fuel, GDI allows for better fuel economy, increased power, and reduced emissions. The application of Dual Continuously Variable Valve Timing (D-CVVT) on both intake and exhaust camshafts allows for further improvements in efficiency, fuel economy, and emissions.
Accent rides on a 2,570 mm wheelbase and is 1,700 mm in width, representing an increase of 70 mm and 5 mm respectively over the outgoing model. As a result, Accent enjoys superior interior volume and passenger space. Total length of the new model is 4,370 mm for 4-door versions and 4,115 mm for the 5-door.
While the car’s exterior dimensions are consistent with those of traditional subcompacts, Accent is classified by Transport Canada as a compact sedan thanks to its interior volume. To provide perspective, Accent 4-door features more total interior volume than the Honda Civic.

Hyundai doesn’t believe that consumers should have to pay a premium for safety, so a long list of safety features are included as standard equipment on all 2012 Accent models. A total of six airbags protect occupants in the event of a collision, including two front impact airbags, two front seat-mounted side impact airbags, and curtain side-impact airbags for front and rear passengers. Active front head restraints and seatbelt pretensioners work in conjunction with the airbag system to aid in preventing injury.
The Accent’s underlying structure is engineered to protect occupants using a Collision Load Dispersion mechanism. The vehicle’s structure distributes the force of an impact in three ways to minimize floor deformation and maintain the integrity of the cabin.
Electronic Stability Control (ESC) and Traction Control work together to help deliver confident handling in all conditions. Vehicle Stability Management (VSM) integrates control of the ESC and motor-driven power steering (MDPS) to provide handling assistance in slippery conditions or in sudden cornering scenarios. The system can deliver up to 8 Newton-meters of counter-steering effort when required to assist the driver in maintaining control of the vehicle.
A key safety element for any vehicle is its braking system. Accent is the only car in the subcompact segment to offer four wheel disc brakes as standard. An Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) featuring Electronic Brake Force Distribution (EBD) and Brake Assist (BA) is also included. EBD examines the effect of vehicle load on weight distribution and apportions the braking force between front and rear axles so as to maximize stopping ability. Same engine as the Veloster? That might hurt Veloster sales.

Right. I think there will be a turbo charged engine out soon enough for the veloster. That thing needs to output at least 150 hp.
veloster will also be getting a turbo engine later on.
difference between veloster and this is the veloster is more fun to drive due to its sport suspension and hundreds of standard features.
it’s pretty difficult to launch such a car in EU…. it’s a kind of “go between” …. bigger than the i20 and 10 cm smaller than i30 …
and H has to put a diesel engine inside. But very nice to me, I especially like the hatch. It’s gonna be a hot seller everywhere
If u think bout it Hyundai will have alot of cars to choose from I think its good thing to cover all bases with many different cars!
in the past Tiburon and Elantra shared the same engine i dont thing this will canibalise Velsoter sales the veloster get the automatic dual clutched transmission!
…and lot more sporty interior and exterior look!
I like this, but it will be interesting to see the next Kia Rio compared to this.
When the sedan will be 172 inches long while the 5 door will be 162 inches long. The Veloster will be inbetween at 166 inches. And of course there won’t be a 2 door Accent anymore since that slot will be taken by Veloster.
Execpt for the price, the Veloster aim 17-18 k$, current 3 doors aim 11k$!base price!the vesloste is more likely to be Elantra coupe!Like the tiburon was on first lauch, same engine as Elantra same wheelbas as Elantra but coupé!
Why would Hyundai (not) use the same 6 speed dual clutch automatic transmission in both the Veloster “and” the Accent? If its going to be a so called Ford Fiesta killer as Hyundai`s US CEO bragged about……it better have a 6 speed dual clutch transmission like the (Fiesta) has….right?
Hyundai Canada says it will be on sale @ end of April.Drove the new Elantra & was Really impressed but will wait to see Accent as it will be less $$ & better economy & Performance.The old Accent was a pretty good drive but this new one should be great!
Why does the 2012 Rio have push button start as an option and not the accent?? Leather ? Heated seats and heated mirrors? Power sunroof? I’m waiting for the accent and possibly doing a trade in for it but can’t seem to find accurate info. Supposed to be coming out late May early June in Canada….we’ll wait and see
Maureen, If you live in Canada, all those item `s will probably be available. For your US Aneighbors to the sout of you, unfortunately not so much. They have no Push Button Start, no Power Moonroof, etc. Guess they figure that Canadians are more willing to buy upscale content in small B-Segment vehicles then American`s will. For those that want more content, they will have to shop KIa and the new Rio.
