Hyundai Small Crossover To Be Called Kona?
Hyundai is mulling “Kona” as the name of its new compact crossover vehicle.
It is not known whether Hyundai will use the Kona moniker in Korea only or also internationally.
Codenamed OS, the new small crossover vehicle from Hyundai Motor Company will make its Korean-market premiere this June, while sales should commence shortly after.
Where does the Kona name come from?
Kona is the name of a district on the Big Island Hawaii famous for coffee.
The sunny Kona District stretches for about 60 miles from Kona International Airport to beyond Kealakekua Bay on Hawaii Island’s lava-lined western coast. Along this expansive area, you’ll find everything from coffee farms to historic Hawaiian landmarks. (source: gohawaii)
It is not the first time that Hyundai Motor Company would name a car after famous location in a move to avoid any controversies over vehicle names provoking negative reactions from people in different countries.
Just to name a few, the Santa Fe, Hyundai Motor’s flagship midsize SUV, is the capital of the state of New Mexico.
The Tucson crossover,bears the name of a city and the county seat of Pima County, Arizona.
Hyundai’s discontinued compact sports coupe Tiburon is originally a name for an incorporated town in Marin County, California, which also means shark in Spanish.
