Hyundai Motor America announces 2012 Elantra Coupe to hit the U.S. dealerships in spring this year!

Hyundai is planning a surprising reveal for the spring 2011! As announced at a dealer meeting in San Francisco recently, Hyundai will bring a two-door Elantra Coupe to the market. The 2012 Hyundai Elantra Coupe release date has been set for spring this year, meaning we are only a few months away from it.

Hyundai has not released any official details about the up-coming 2012 Elantra Coupe, so we will have to wait until the model gets its official unveiling. It is very likely that the all-new Hyundai Elantra Coupe will make its official U.S. premiere at the New York auto show, which starts on April 22nd.

Hyundai Elantra Coupe sales should commence shortly after its official debut, so those interested in a car, should hurry up and visit their local Hyundai dealer to pre-order the two-door coupe. Why? As you know, the all-new Elantra sedan has been in huge demand ever since it hit the market and Hyundai has had plenty of troubles meeting a demand for it. We are expecting the same to happen with the Elantra Coupe.

Under the hood, there will be the same 1.8L Nu engine as in the four-door Elantra sedan, however, the four-cylinder engine will also get a more potent variant. Hyundai engineers will apply a gasoline direct injection -GDI technology and turbocharger to the existing powerplant, which means more power than now. Expect the 1.8L engine to churn out around 210 horsepower.

The 2012 Hyundai Elantra Coupe will also get a dual-clutch transmission (DCT), which debuted recently in the 2012 Hyundai Veloster 3 door coupe. Stay tuned for more news about the up-coming Hyundai Elantra Coupe!

Wow, this caught me offguard. A 2 door Civic fighter? Hyundai is REALLY pulling all the punches! I like that kind of mentality to grow in the US market. Let alone all over the world.

  2. Hyundai Elantra owner says:

Now this is major news! I’m looking forward to the new Hyundai Elantra Coupe! As the owner of a 2010 Elantra sedan, I’d love to have a similarly sized two-door coupe in my garage.

Since i don’t like the styling of the all-new Veloster, the Elantra Coupe should do well for me.

BTW, does anyone know when exactly Hyundai plans to launch the Elantra Coupe?

  3. Klingon says:

Elantras main market is supplying rental car lots. Only the Impala, Cobalt, and the Focus sell more.

I don’t think rental car companies are interested in Elantras with two doors.

  4. Jose says:

I smell future Forte Coupe Turbo as well as the Elantra Coupe Turbo for 2012!!!

  5. No Name says:

I have a hunch that since the Veloster Turbo has been definitely confirmed for Europe and not North America, the Elantra Coupe is here to fulfill that spot. In that case, the Veloster should not be targeted at the Scion TC as Krafchik had compared to otherwise, rather it is the role of the Elantra Coupe. However, I’m sure you all agree with me that it would be nice to have a Veloster Turbo in North America. The more options, the better!

  6. Heywood Joblome says:

Still not a peep on whether or not the new Hyundai Accent Sedan and 5 door Hatchback will be unveiled at the New York Auto Show in April as well. Odd, Hyundai Canada revealed both vehicles in mid- Jan in Montreal, will be displayed next week at the Toronto Auto Show but no news in regards to the 2012 Accent below the 39th parallel? What gives? The US market is 10 times that of the Canadian market and Hyundai USA is saying nothing!

  7. attaboy says:

at Montreal the Accent Lauch was a North Am lauch and canada is a good market for Accent, What’s bad to let some crumbs to others country?

  8. attaboy says:

wait april to see accent in dealers

Is the information regarding the powertrain actually correct? A few months ago, Hyundai Blog mentioned that a turbo 1.6GDI would be available for the Elantra 4dr.

Now a turbo 1.8T for the coupe sounds too good to be true.

  10. john p says:

I’m excited about this, there were rumors awhile back but this came out of left field! This my be my next car for sure to replace my Mazda 3s. Its interesting because american auto makers say there isn’t interest for coupes, I tend to disagree. I like the new Ford Focus but no coupe no sale!

  11. Hyundai Fan says:

Hyundai has 2.0L turbo engine, 1.6L turbo in the development and 1.8L which could get turbo and gdi technology sometime in the near future, according to John Krafcik. So, all three are possible options…

  12. cancarguy says:

Elantra coupe set for late 2011 launch – Nov/Dec? Not spring!

  13. john p says:

I saw that too, a launch later in the year, some dealers were shown a picture & they say the car is a real looker!

  14. omicron says:

If they put in a 2.0L 177HP engine, that would be sweet. I don’t think they would want to encroach into the Genesis coupe territory.

  15. Austin Hyundai Dealer says:

I work for a Hyundai Dealer in Austin Tx and I have yet to hear about the elantra coupe debut! I have had several clients ask me about them and expect to see quite the demand for these as well as the sedan. I myself am in the market for a New Veloster but trying to hold out for the Turbo!

  16. Cal says:

I have a 4dr limited and feel if Hyundai wants to have a turbo in the Elantra it should be the Sonata torbo with all wheel drive and then they can call it an R and compete with any auto maker, putting the small turbo engine in will not make that much difference and it can’t compete with what is already out there. If they want to get people’s attention it will take more then 200 Hp that is common place now. They need to show the public they are the one to watch. I have had all the fancy cars and have owned a lot of fast cars and 200 Hp now days is not much, my bike puts out more Hp then my Elantra

  17. Ant Man says:

How accurate is this information? The press release I read makes no mention of a turbo & DCT ! autoblog.com/2012/02/08/2013-hyundai-elantra-coupe-has-the-civic-in-its-fluidic-sights/

  18. Richard Gorman says:

I live in the mountains of Colorado, I drive my Elantra over the continental divide, (11,300 feet an 8% grade, for 10 miles) more then ten times a week, at sixty miles an hour. It is dependable even in Colorado snow storms. I’d buy the same car again. I drove my last vehicle over 250,000 miles and expect the same from my Hyundai.
