2012 Hyundai Accent 5-door hatchback
The all-new 2012 Hyundai Accent 5-door hatchback makes its official public premiere at this year’s auto show in New York!
Hyundai Motor Company is celebrating the US-market premiere of its brand-new 2012 Accent 5-door hatchback, which received a complete makeover for the 2012 model year.
With the all-new 2012 Accent, Hyundai redefines consumer’s expectations in the subcompact car segment by offering the upscale-look, highly advanced powertrain technology, up-to-date safety equipment and best-in-segment fuel economy ratings.
Under the hood, the 2012 Hyundai Accent features an all-aluminum 1.6L Gamma four-cylinder engine, which uses latest engine technology to achieve a segment leading horsepower rating and class-leading fuel economy.
The highly-advanced 1,6L GDI engine generates 138 horsepower and 123 lb-ft of maximum torque and achieves 30 mpg in the city or 40 mpg on highway. It can be mated to either a six-speed manual or 6-speed automatic gearbox.
Available as a 5-door hatchabck or 4-door sedan, the new model offers a wide selection of exterior colors: Century White, Mocha Bronze, Marathon Blue, Ironman Silver, Ultra Black, Boston Red, Clearwater Blue, Electrolyte Green and Cyclone Gray.
There are three trim levels available, a four-door GLS, five-door GS, and five-door SE. The 2012 Hyundai Accent SE gets a roof-mounted spoiler, vertical taillights and standard 16-inch alloy-wheels.
It is also equiped with an electronic power steering wheel, which provides sportier feel, a set of fog lamps, Piano black accent trim, cruise control, and Bluetooth. Standard features on all Hyundai Accent models include six-airbags, four-wheel disc brakes with ABS and front-seat active head restraints.
While Hyundai has yet to release details on full pricing the base 2012 Hyundai Accent 4-door sedan will start at $13.205, while the top-of-the-range Hyundai Accent SE 5-door hatchback will cost $17.555. According to Hyundai, the 2012 Hyundai Accent sales will commence next month (May 2011).

Sad color choices – 2 blue, mocha, regular red/black/silver/gray, green – where’s the tango red or wine red
It needs seat Leather, and you know it(Folds Arms).
I wish we had the LCD temp change set in the center stack too. Come on guys, I know the US currency is taking a hit, but these are fine details to Accentuate the Accent. I know the international prices, and these fine details arent expensive. In fact, the variants with these details are cheaper in currency value than the verision we are getting.
These details would make Accent the best car in it’s class sold in America-including the MINI.
Make a great car the best car, and that’s how you get the love.
We also would like the Korean gauges?
Why did you change the gauge set?
You assembled an Accent from the cheapest bits of every Accent/Solaris/Verna on the international market, and then added even more cheaptasitc items such as steelies and caps? Come on guys.
Where`s the Power Moon Roof option? Available in almost every market but USA. Maybe Canada will get it? And, going from 16“ Tires and Alloy Wheels down to tiny 14“ Tires with steel wheel and covers a bit much. Could`nt just drop to 15“? Why not drop down to 13“ Tires and Wheels and make a REAL Flintstone Vehicle?
What the hell does Electrolyte Green look like? Its not even listed on the Hyundai Web Site! Too new or was it dropped already?
@ Heywood Joblome
I believe Electrolyte Green is the exact same green shown in the Veloster. Sadly, I know. It doesn’t catch the eye like say for example, a Mazda 2 green.
How does hyundai expect to put accents on the lot when they can’t even keep elantras in stock?
Interiors:
Why does the US KIA Rio look like it can kill the MINI, while the US Accent looks almost like a Chinese car on the inside?
Pricing:
Why is the 2012 Accent with 6 speed auto, Black Mirrors, Black Door Handles, with Steelies and hubcaps $16K?
This may sound harsh, but I looked foward to having an excellent day yesterday, and finding out how the US Accent has been totally butchered was really harsh.
You destroyed my hopes.
Thanks, guys!!!
Not a good start to making yourselves the “most loved” car company, because you’re allienating a long time customer.
The Rio looks excellent on the inside, but it’s plain body panels and much lower than Accent’s reliability scores= NO!!!
You guys have valid points. But what you seem to miss is the powerplant of the vehicle. This vehicle gets 30/40 MPG and produces 138 horsepower which amongst its competition is incredible. Lets take a look at Nissans new creation. The Versa gets a max of 38 mpg and does 109 HP. Both get “Class-Above” interior volume space, but the Accent is still more efficient and stylish. The Accent also has the best in class warranty and is also one of the lightests cars in its class having a great power to weight ratio also helps it achieve pretty brisk pickup for a commuter or first car. It makes a very strong daily driver value. Not to mention it will also have a guaranteed trade in value when you go to trade it in, so it will probably have the lowest overall cost to own. Yes at 16k it has hubcaps and black mirrors. But it also gets hybrid gas mileage AND has the most standard safety features in its class: IE 6 airbags VSM ESC TCS ABS 4 Wheel disk brakes and much more. It will have the best stopping distance, I can almost guarantee that, and that is just the tip of the iceberg. Im looking forward to selling this vehicle. Nothing can come close for the price.
HyundaiSmoke is right. What other newly released vehicle has (Black) exterior door handles and mirrors, really? And (14“ Tires with steel wheels and covers! Even the soon to be released stripped down Kia Rio will have (PAINTED) color matched mirrors and door handles with 15“ tires with steel wheels and covers! Hyundai figures that they will be able to force buyers to pay the $1200. premium upgrade to get the 16“ tires an alloy wheels with color matching exterior door handles and mirrors even if they don`t give a sweet rats ass about the bluetooth, steering wheel mounted controls, fog lights, leather trim steering wheel and shift knob, etc. Its a gamble that Hyundai is taking. It would push me into the Kia Rio except I don`t want another Ford Fiesta lookalike 3 cluster instrument panel and that stupid hole in the dash to right of the radio. Kia Rio also offers rear back-up camera display, Accent..no mention. Also, will the Accent have the auto engine shut off-turn on feature when the brake petal is released?
I would have to take the new Rio over this, just my thought but I think the Rio hatchback looks steller to this!
LG yeah, you mean an engine that Hyundai should have been using 5 YEARS AGO!!!
Questions:
Where’s the Accent Hybrid?
- We have been teased with that since 2005. Come on now, we know for a fact that HKAG has a New small car hybrid system with 1.6 Gamma mated to a 15KW electric motor, that got 47 MPG US in a heavier KIA Soul, and probably could kill the Prius MPG in a lighter body such as Accent.
Where’s the Futuristic mentality at Hyundai?
- Whatever happened to the people who were there at Hyundai who thought 40 MPG in a car the size of a shoe wasnt good enough? It’s good enough for a Baby Boomer who can remember a time where cars this size got 17 MPG, BUT FOR GEN Y -FU-K NO!!!!
Why isnt the Accent an “Upmarket” car, while the KIA Rio, Elantra, and Veloser are?
- You treat the Accent like the step child, and many of your MOST VIRULENT PRO HYUNDAI ADVOCATES ARE ACCENT DRIVERS!!!!
LETS SEE HOW GOOD YOU ADVOCATE FOR HYUNDAI, ESPECIALLY IN A TIME WHEN EWANICK IS GONE.
They lied to us, and robbed us. The more I think about, the more I think we should revolt against Hyundai. Im giving Hyundai 6-12 months to make a change.
If not, we will have to revolt.
By the way AMERICAN CAR PUNDITS ARE ALLREADY HATING ON THE THING, INCLUDING MYSELF.
AND WHEN THE HYUNDAISMOKE- ONE OF THE BIGGEST ACCENT LOVERS EVER HATES IT- THERES A MOTHER FU-KING PROBLEM, A BIG ASS PROBLEM!!!
I LOVE THIS CAR, AND IT ALMOST BRINGS ME TO TEARS ON HOW IT’S BEEN BUTCHERED!!!
THE BAD ACCENT CHANGE IN AMERICA IS SO EXTREME, THAT PEOPLE ARENT CONSIDERING THE KIA THEY ARE CONSIDERING COMPETITOR!!!
-YEAH COMPETITORS WHO BEG EVERYDAY TO HAVE FANS AS VIRULENT AS I AM, AND AS THE REST OF US ARE. THAT’S ANOTHER REASON WHY THEY ARE SCARED OF HYUNDAI, BECAUSE IT’S NOT JUST THE CARS IT’S THE FANS TOO!!!
TOO BAD YOU FORGOT WHERE YOU CAME FROM LIKE OBAMA, IN FACT HYUNDAI IS TURNING OUT TO BE THE OBAMA OF THE AUTOMOTIVE INDUSTRY, AND THE PEOPLE ARE READY TO REVOLT AGAINST OBAMA- DONT MAKE IT THE PEOPLE ARE READY TO REVOLT AGAINST HYUNDAI.
LIKE WE LOVED OBAMA WE’RE TURNING AGAINST HIM, AND WE CAN EASILY TURN AGAINST YOU TOO!!!
Alternatives:
Mercedes A Class (coming to America soon)
Chevy Sonic Upper Trim
Ford Fiesta
MINI products
Just remember that
And with the way Accent has been Decontented for the US market, it’s not as good as those cars, NOR WILL THE PRESS THINK SO. YEAH IT’S BETTER THAN A FIT OR YARIS, BUT WHO GIVS A SHIT, ACCENT MC ON IT’S OWN MERIT HAS OUTSOLD THOSE CARS OFF AND ON AGAIN FOR THE LAST 3 YEARS. YOU NEEDED SOMETHING THAT COULD REALLY GET ATTENTION FROM THE JOURNALIST SET.
It can have that 1.6 GDI all day, but like past Accents with more power and just as good fuel economy as the competitors this car will get hated on and will be called a “SHIT CAR” FOR THE VERY THING PEOPLE HAVE BEEN WANTING TO GET FIXED THAT REALLY HAS BEEN FIXED-
THE INTERIOR AND SHITTY PACKAGING, EISNTEINS!!!!!
HASNT
When are you guys goign to stop paying attention to dying companies like the Japanese brands (well except Mazda).
BECAUSE THE LARGER HEAVIER US MAZDA 3 WITH THAT NEW SKY ENGINE GETS 40 MPG.
LIKE I SAID TIME AND TIME BEFORE 40 MPG ISNT GOING TO BE GOOD ENOUGH BY 2012.
YOU DIDNT BELEIVE ME THEN, SO PAY FOR IT!!!
Hyundai needs younger Management and staff who realizes Toyota/Honda aren’t the the end all be all.
the american model accent is truly a let down….not the accent alone but almost all american model hyundai’s shed some features that are offered internationally and in korea. i was surprised when i saw that the rio was goin to get rear view cameras, electric folding mirrors, leather seats, 17 inchers nd so many more features than the accent…nd that! is a LET DOWN by HYUNDAI!…..am worried about u hyundai, its too early to be fukin up like dis
It’s better than a PT Cruiser.
Accent:
HP to Weight Ratio 17.6
PT:
HP to Weight Ratio 21.1
It probably has a faster 0-60 time too.
If the Kia Rio Hatchback gets to their Dealers in the next few months at the same time the Hyundai Accent Hatchback arrives, although I doubt that Hyundai being the “parent” company would allow that to happen, watch Kia kick Hyundai`s ass! Just wish the Rio didn`t have to put the Ford Fiesta`s 3 cluster instrument panel on its dashboard. And whats with all this bragging about a “B-Segment” Sub Compact Car getting 40 m.p.g. when its larger “C-Segment” Compact vehicle the Elantra gets the same m.p.g. with a larger 1.8 ltr. more powerful engine, WTF?
Im trying to help the Koreans out, because I can see their potential, but it seems they aren’t listening.
Forget Making Japanese cars.
Here’s why:
1. America is about to go through an economic collapse worse than the Great Depression. Now, some of this is partly due to American Monetary Policy, and Part of this is partly due to structural economic changes America still has woefully underprepared itself for. There will also be Hyperinflation followed by a period of deep deflation. Hyperinflation follwed by deep deflation will kill bottom lines of companies.
2. The Chinese will take advantage of this situation and bring in their 50+ highly fuel efficient models (which many are more efficient than ours). Sure they will have problems at first, but they are learning even faster than Hyundai/KIA did. I’ve been watching these guys closely.
These cars will also be cheaper, and Im sorry but Americans will buy a $12,000 Chery Fulwin with 45 MPG and a Leather Interior with alloys, over a $16K Accent with Black Mirrors, Steel Wheels and Caps, cloth seats, and a 6 speed auto tranny.
The Chery Fulwin looks better than every Japanese small car on the market too. Definately doesnt look as good as an Accent, but it’s a huge improvement over the Japanese. THE CHINESE HAVE 50 OF THESE KINDS OF CARS. Oh, the Chery Fulwin has 110 HP (I told you the Chinese are learning fast).
3. This Economic Collapse will kill the American Brands and America might have only 1 car company (Ford) when it’s all said and done. The best case scenario for the Americans would be:
- Ford will continue to go upmarket and drop Lincoln.
- GM will drop Buick, and GMC. GM would just be Chevy and Cadillac.
- No Chrysler ANYTHING (besides, the Koreans can do Chrysler but better).
The US government doesnt even have enough money to give to states to pave roads, much less give to dying car companies anymore.
4. The Germans would Merge, and some of them might not make it. They will take a big hit especially those brands with 5 cylinder small cars.
The Koreans need to focus on kicking Germany’s ass- ONLY. YOU CAN DO IT!!!!
5. The Japanese are in decline like the Americans in the 1970s, and 5 or so brands wont make it, or they will get sucked up by Toyota, Nissan, and Honda. The Japanese like the Americans might only have a “Big 3.” An economic Collapse would kill them, but KOREA ISNT BIG ENOUGH TO SHUT THEM DOWN, AND DOING SO WOULD KILL THE KOREANS. LET THE CHINESE SHUT DOWN THE JAPANESE IRRITANT, WHILE THE KOREANS FIGHT THE GERMANS.
6. Bye Bye SAAB, Bye Bye Volvo. Hyundai Sonata/KIA Optima are better than Volvos and SAABs with their cheap interiors anyway.
The Japanese put their eggs all into the American basket, and they are about to Boiled, Scrambled, and hard fried.
Watch.
You may think I’m crazy now, but you’ll see.
The Chinese cars are a lot better than what people make them out to be. Hey, they look better than the old school Korean cars, and have a better interior fit and finish than the Koreans had in old times too.
VWs have been cheapened in quality, so why make a Cheap quality Hyundai anymore. The Accent should be the “New Golf” of America. That car when people think of an obtainable Premium Small Car.
Honda Drivers are Loyal, and Toyotas are quite frankly “Shit” cars. Why would you want to be on that level after all of that hard work?
Most people in this country DONT buy Toyotas- for GOOD REASON. So why would you want to allienate most of the country (and your customer base), to court drivers looking for Bran flakes?
Stop listening to these American Automotive Analysts- these 50+ year olds who think Toyota is GOD. Listen to the young guys like myself who THINK EVERYTHING IS A BETTER ALTERNATIVE THAN A TOYOTA.
Hyundai didn’t make the accent to be a premium small car. That’s what the veloster is for as well as the BMW 3 series fighter that Hyundai is developing. The accent is our entry level car. Safe, fuel efficient, easy to look at, decent pickup, and great warranty. Parents and teens will have their choice between Accent 4 and 5 door, Elantra, Elantra Coupe and Veloster. Hyundai has what it takes to dominate the small car and entry vehicle segment especially when combined with the assurance aspect (they are going to guarantee trade in values). The new accent is tons better than the 2010 Elantra in almost every way. So realistically they upped the accents class while keeping it in the subcompact price segment. Compare the new accent with the old one, compare the accent with it’s competition, but don’t judge it by future events that will take over 5 years maybe even 10 years to occur because by then Hyundai will adapt or evolve again. Hyundai is ferocious.
LGSales, Since you Sell the Hyundai product, one can understand you being such an apologist for this huge “bomb” that Hyundai just dropped with its USA version 2012 Accent. Why for a mere $1000 dollars more would anyone other than an illiterate moron purchase a Accent with a 1.6 ltr. engine that gets 40 mpg highway when they could upgrade to the slightly larger Elantra with a 1.8 ltr engine that gets the (same) 40 mpg highway. You can put all the lipstick on a Pig you want in whatever color “you” choose, its still a Pig with black painted exterior door handles and mirrors with tiny 14“ tires with steel wheels and covers. Face it, what other new cars have hit the market recently even in base form with those attributes? How many Base Model GLS 4 door Sedans will your dealership want to keep in inventory? When you want to swap for another Accent at another dealership, think they will want one of your base model Accents with those catchy tiny wheels & blk trim door handles & mirrors (unless) the exterior color of the Accent is Black? You know and I do as well, you will only inventory the upgraded GLS Sedans and GS Hatchbacks w/Spoilers except for a couple of Lose Leaders you hold on to for Low Ball Advertising purposes only, Admit It !
The new Accent is an improvement over the former, in many ways, so expect to pay more. I own an ’09 SE hatch, and I love it, but I paid $15,500 to get the alloy rims, short-shifter, fog-lamps and other extras. Now the Accent gets better fuel economy and a lot more horsepower…….plus a six speed….which I would love to have. It is the only car in it’s class with direct injection. It is also a lot better looking than the last model. So, I would have no problem paying 17,500 for the premium version if I wanted alloy rims and the other extras. Either way, all models will have a six-speed and 138 hp, which will smoke all the competition.
The power-to-weight ratio gives this car huge tuner-potential. If you want something different, get the Veloster, it should have all the cosmetic touches and extras. The new Accent will sell very well, because it’s a nice-looking, powerful little car with great fuel economy and a great warranty.
Hako, I agree with most of your positions, but why is the Kia Rio going to offer Leather, Power Moonroof, illuminated directional indicator exterior mirrors, and many other upscale features that will not be available on the US version Accent? The base model LX Rio will have color matching color exterior door handles and mirrors along with 15“ (not) 14“ tires and wheels and covers. So what you might say? Small touches like that on a base model vehicle makes a huge difference. Hyundai being the parent corporation has obviously taken the position to make the Kia Brand the Premium Brand for its Sub-Compact B Segment vehicles. It`s there Call but they better be prepared for significant push back and loose sales to Kia in the process. Also, to put out this new highly anticipated “eco car” with a 1.6 ltr. engine that weights less and cost`s just a bit less then it larger sibling, the Elantra that has a 1.8 ltr. engine that gets the EXACT advertised fuel economy of 40 mpg highway, whats with that? Recent elections have proved the point that Americans are Stupid, but even( Joe Six-Pac) could figure that`s a No Brainer and either go for the Elantra or just keep his old pick-up truck. Just what was Hyundai thinking?
The Versa may have a lot less power, but why would anybody buy a costly but frugal Accent over a larger Dirt cheap Versa with similar MPG from CVT if MPG is what they are looking for.
That’s Pretty bad when an Accent Enthusiast says that, but sadly I think that’s what’s going to happen.
If Hyundai really wanted to differentiate itself, they could have made the Accent a Hybrid only car, and marketed it as America’s cheapest Hybrid with better than Prius Economy. They have the tech- JUST DO IT!!!
The Rio makes the Accent look like a Chinese car, but then again even the Chinese are putting in Premium features i.e. Chery Fulwin and others.
I really like the Rio, but the Rio compared to the Accent has piss poor reliability. I hate (loathe) those red gauges too.
This Accent may have more power and MPG, but for $16K you got alloys, Moonroof, and fog lamps in the old one. While this one is equipped like the $13K Model from the old one.
Sorry, but 30 more HP and 5 more MPG isnt worth a $3000 premium.
That’s ok, Hyundai/KIA just wont get my dollars then. I shopped here for REAL value, but I guess you guys dont believe in Value anymore. A shame.
I think Hyundai Plans to kill the Accent over the long term, and this is their intentional way of doing it.
Why would anybody buy an Accent with Auto trans when they can:
1. Just fork over $4000 more for a much larger 35 MPG Sonata with auto (This is America- Big car country remember. Americans prefer Larger Cars gas prices or no gas prices) You have to give people extra incentive to buy small B cars in volume here.
2. Pay $1700 more for a 40 MPG Elantra
3. Pay $1000 more for a 40 MPG Veloster
This must have been a hastily made business decision without some hard thought put into it, or an intentional plot to get rid of Accent, and it’s long time owners like myself over the long term.
Hyundaismoke your question is the answer in which you seek. Hyundai is offering something for everyone and they have a car that is designed to go toe to toe with every car in their respectable segments and win overall. They can pay 17500 and get a fully loaded accent which is the equivalent to a 18600 Hyundai Elantra except the accent will have foglights or they can pay roughly 1500 more for an automatic veloster with similar equipment but sportier and with more techie features at the expense of 1 door or they can pay 4000 more and get a base sonata. Hyundai is not competing amongst their own product line. Hyundai is competing with everyone elses in their same respectable segments… And winning.
LGSales, so you feel that the $1100. price increase between a Accent and Elantra all comes down to the fact that the Elantra (does not) have the Fogliights? Sure they look more attractive then the BLACK plastic plugs they put in the bumper in their place, but who the hell ever uses them? I`ve had them on my 2006 KIa Rio5 and in my over 5 years of ownership have only put them on once to actually see if they were wired up! But, since your obviously a big fan of the Black painted exterior door handles and mirrors, you probably would not mind seeing more Black trim with those knock out plugs in the Elantra`s bumper, would you? Funny, you never responded to how many Base Model GLS and GS Accent`s your dealership was going to inventory? Like I posted earlier, just a few to keep on the lot as Lose-Leaders for your Newspaper advertising for the common bait and switch game. Next time your at the Regional Hyundai pep rally while your all soiling yourselves with Corporate Bullshit, better pass on the Company Kool-Aid!
Wait a sec. I overlooked your question because I don’t know. Its tough to say and I don’t order the cars. Id probably stock 65% Base GLS automatics at first, 30% Premium Package, 4% Manual GLS with the Comfort Package and 1% Base manual. To test the waters. But I’m not the GM. I see the value in springing for the extra 1300 but believe it or not some people dont care about remote keyless entry the or the body color outside mirror. If that was the case then we wouldnt sell as many Santa Fe GLS was we do which accounts for over 80% of the Santa Fe’s that we sell. Most people just want the basics that buy not only the accent but most of our models(power windows power locks CD player Ipod intergration abs 6 airbags automatic transmission, etc). I know because I sell them and we do roughly 400-500 new hyundai’s a month. Atleast most of which are gls model vehicles or the equivelant. Back to the accent. Would it be nice for it to have standard color outside mirriors, yes. Does it make a big deal, no. It still gets the best standard gas mileage in its class, while having the most standard safety features, while having the best power to weight ratio and the most powerful engine in its class, while having a 6 speed auto or 6 speed manual option, while having the best warranty, while being one of the most attractive cars in its class, while having standard ipod direct intergration and xm radio, while having the best shoulder room in its class which is a big qualm with subcompacts and it has class-above epa interior volume space. Those are just a few selling points, I can go on and on.
O so there is no confusion, the Santa fe does have remote keyless entry, I was directing that more towards the outside mirror color thing. Besides if a customer wanted remote keyless entry we can get 2 remotes programmed for anywhere from 100-200 USD and thats being generous
“Sorry, but 30 more HP and 5 more MPG isnt worth a $3000 premium.”
If that was the case then people wouldnt spend anywhere from 2500-5000 more for hybrids. IE the Nissan altima hybrid which only gets 35 MPG Highway as opposed to the Nissan altima 4 cyl that gets 32 MPG highway, or the Hyundai Sonata hybrid which gets 40 MPG as opposed to the Hyundai Sonata which gets 35. Shall I keep going?
Besides it still prices out aggressively in comparision with other cars in its segment but gives more power more safety more gas mileage more warranty etc. The accent gives you more than anything else it competes with barring maybe the next rio which doesn’t count because HMA still benefits from Kia selling the Rio.
LGSales, I hate to keep “carping” on that insignificant trim detail of (Black painted exterior door handles and mirrors) and those tiny 14“ tires and steel wheels, but what other recently introduced New vehicle has those cheap trim selling points, NOT? The other issue is, although we are not comparing apples with apples or oranges with oranges, can you justify the mere $1100. extra, to go from an Accent to an Elantra, with the Elantra`a larger 1.8 ltr engine which although in a slightly larger and heavier vehicle achieves the same Fuel Economy as the smaller Accent of 40 mpg highway? What about the big issue, Trade In Value, YOU are in the business. Tell me which vehicle, the Elantra or Accent will bring back the larger residual trade in value in 3 or 4 years. Almost (Every) Automotive Pundit predicts that the Elantra will have the highest residual value of ANY car in its Class. The Hyundai Accent, not so much by a huge margin. You have the Hertz Black Book of trade in values, You know better! If you were a consumer and YOU were going to purchase a smaller new Hyundai Sedan, which vehicle would you purchase that would achieve the best value and fuel economy dollar for dollar. Does the new Elantra Sedan not look as good as the 2012 Accent Sedan? Face it, Hyundai USA dropped the ball on this one big time. There will be major changes to both trim and content after the first year introduction, you know it as well as I.
I was expecting close to 45 MPG in this Accent.
1. The 1.6 Gamma when converted to US units= 40MPG.
2. GDI should add a few more MPG (2-3 or so) plus the extra 15 HP from the standard 123 HP Gamma.
3. 6 Speed Auto should add even more (1-2 or so) MPG.
What Happened, is it the EPA testing regimen, etc…?
I’ll keep my mind open to that Rio, I still want a Veloster Turbo, and I’m waiting on whether Hyundai will deliver on that Small Car Hybrid System (hopefully in Accent).
I did catch an Automotive News article a few months ago saying Hyundai is developing 2 Hybrids- Blue Will and a smaller one. The Blue Will is the size of an Elantra or Prius, so something on the Accent would be very, very, very nice.
However, I remember the promise I made to myself that my next daily driver would be a Hybrid regardless on getting that Veloster Turbo. Lets see how the 2 Hyundai Hybrids that are ocming look and are packaged.
As you can see, I’m less pissed off and more open.
Hyundai needs to bring the i20 to America to offer the cheap seats.
Did you guys know that Base trim Mercedes A Classes in Europe have Black door handles and Mirrors, with steelies and caps for $28K US equivalent?
Hyundai Accent should offer more packaging- Frugal and Eco VS Premium. KIA Should be Cheap and Sporty VS Premium.
Guys, Im really serious about this $7 a gallon thing. What’s wrong with Hyundai and KIA going that route?
You should offer a ton of packaging on these small cars to where Hyundai and/or KIA should be an ultimate small car center.
You’re almost there, but you have to work on the packaging.
HyundaiSmoke, Don`t start being an apologist now for Hyundai, I know your pissed as well as I am! My 2011 Ford Fiesta Hatchback (without the Super Fuel Efficiency SFE) package gets 41 to 43 mpg highway at 75 to 80 mph! If I drove at 65, it would probably get 45 mpg! 35 to 36 mpg in stop and go city driving here in South Florida with the A/C on too! I hope Hyundai is just low balling their fuel estimates and knows that they will be (much) higher in real time driving. Since I can`t get the GS or LE Hatchback with Beige/Tan interior, only grey or black, if I finally opt for the Accent instead of the Elantra (I doubt it), it will be the GLS Sedan loaded with the upgraded Premium Package so that I can get color matching exterior door handles and mirrors and remote key fobs & real size 16“ tires and alloy wheels. All the other crap, fog lights, steering wheel controls, blue tooth, leather covered wheel and knob, and even the cruise control is just thrown in. They don`t even include the so called (tuned) steering upgrade regardless of the trim upgrade on the Sedan. Only the LE Hatchback get that. Smoke, keep waiting for Hyundai`s mini Hybrid, it will be just around the corner. Probably arrive along with Jesus w/black painted exterior door handles and mirrors! Except for the Mercedes Euro A series you mentioned, name a few more new vehicles that don`t have either color matching or chrome exterior door handles?
Hyundai wants to sell more Elantras than Accents. Kia wants to sell more Rios than Fortes. This is best for Hyundai/Kia to let each sibling have a segment they shine in.
Your Ford fiesta may get 41 mpg when you drive it but that’s not what the EPA says it gets. If you had an accent and drove like you do then you would probably get 44-46 mpg in the same situations because the accents mpg is higher based off of similar driving situations in tests done by the EPA. Also, your fiesta has way less horsepower and torque and is smaller.
Not apologizing, just trying to find the little positives there are to the situation. No man, Hyundai really has to do some work to get that Accent “Upgraded.” I love these guys, but they know they cant run that car in that manner. A little tough love.
brgator, you have a point, but at least you can get leather and premium features in a top of the line Forte. We should have the same luxury in the Accent SE, or even an Accent Limited Version.
LG, But Hybrids are offering more than a 5 MPG difference. I’d pay that much of a premium for an Accent Hybrid, but not for the standard GDI with 6 speed auto box. I think $16-21K would be a fair price for a Brid. A stripper at $16, and an upmarket one at $21.
Accent surely wont be America’s cheapest car anymore, but it could be America’s cheapest Hybrid. That’s a marketing opportunity you know.
Make that, and sign me up. Otherwise, this party is not what I’m looking for.
Gas at $7 a gallon like I scooped on my site, will open the market for more premium small car trim oppotrunities. I say they should take advantage of it to the fullest. Accent/Rio/Veloster/Soul/Forte/Elantra
Hyundai/KIA should be America’s Premium Small Car store- not VW, not MINI, Not Mercedes.
I might hate on the low trim Accent, but the Cheapest MINI has not only Steelies and Caps, but Roll Down windows too.
Remember that.
Smoke, how many of those Low Trim Cooper Mini`s see see around, VERY few here in SO FL. LGSales, my Fiesta is not an oddity either. I`ve spoken to other Fiesta owners and they are all reporting similar fuel economy. My SE Hatchback with Power Moonroof, upgraded trim package with cruise control and Alloy Wheels had a MSRP of approx. 17K.With pre-order $595 discount, an additional $500. discount for taking delivery by July 21,11`and using Ford X Plan with NO Dealer Fee`s, less then $16.K before tax, title, and tags A bit smaller then the Accent Hatchback but much more content and IMO better looks. John Krafcik said Accent was going to kick Fiesta`s Ass, guess we will have to wait and see. Oh, the Fiesta has the newer Duel clutch 6 speed automatic transmission they put in the new Hyundai Veloster, but guess their putting a cheaper single clutch tranny in the Accent.
Fiesta Sales are Smoking hot right now. 10,000 last month. The Fiesta, like it or not is a Premium Small Car as well.
Fit, Yaris, Versa, Mazda 2, Cube= Economy Small Cars.
The Juke is sort of premium.
The Golf is Premium.
Economy small cars serve a purpose. I’d say let them make those. People are downsizing, and the higher Gas prices get the more they will downsize.
Premium Small Cars serve many purposes:
1. Court the previous owners of once Big Comfy cars/SUVs into small cars. (I say more Converts can be drawn from the Big Car Market than the Traditional Eco Box Market)
2. Builds up total brand/company image in the minds of people.
3. True small car enthusiasts like myself would hold down a fort and create a “Halo”- making Hyundai/KIA the must look see place to shop for Premium Small Cars for the enthusiast.
Enthusiasts can be:
- Sportback Rally Lovers
- Premium Small Car Lovers
- Ultra MPG Lovers
- Sport Compact lovers
- Quality and Attention to Detail Lovers
- Value Lovers
- Reliability Lovers and Demanders
I’m a mixture of all 6, BTW.
Hyundai/KIA should be the utimate alternative, not just a pack runner.
Hyundai/KIA is a Movement, but the time is now to start preparing to go for the jugular. If I were Korea, I’d send guys to the US to make sure Hyundai/KIA is ready to kill.
HMA is now being too humble for it’s own good.
In a real Revolution sometimes you have to shake people up, and piss the Nay Sayers off. It’s the establishment that needs to be Humbled- NOT YOU!!!
There should be no perfectly good reason why HKAG cant sell 2 Million cars, with 750,000-1 Million Small cars.
Dont court the Eco Boxers from Toyota and Honda (This company will totally destroy it’s vision by doing this). Look to catch the SUV and Big Sedan buyers on the way down. People want fuel efficient cars that dont look like Boxes, with shitty packaging for $16K. They want Grown up and Premium, but futuristic interiors. Until this happens, Americans will rather find other alternatives.
The current crop of small cars like the Fit and Yaris are ass, dude. Those cars are for 40-70 year old Eco Geeks, who are guilty they have amassed wealth, so they buy cheap Eco small cars to make themselves feel in touch with the masses, when they really arent.
MINI= Snobs who think they are superior
Accent= People who just want a Mature but Premium and silky sexy car, but are down to earth. Yet, they want something that can quickly become a race car to fling around, while feeling good on the highway and around potholes.
Rio= Playboy/Girl’s (of any age) Premium sportscar.
Fiesta= Something for all
Hyundai/KIA should be about doing what it takes to make America LOVE SMALL CARS, rather than seeing them as “Must Haves”!!!
HyundaiSmoke, Peace Bro, I hear you. I, like yourself have waited patiently for a year and a half after you first posted the pictures from China of those hot Women standing next to the next generation Accent. It was a stunning aqua green or silver blue colored vehicle ( the Verna) that both the models and the vehicle made me drool. All that wait and anticipation to be blown by Hyundai Motors America unveiling the specs for its USA version shitbox. Ford when it was planning its USA North American version of the Fiesta did over a year of research and internet/Facebook feedback evaluations with tens of thousands of inputs of suggestions of what vehicle content folks wanted. It worked! Sure, there`s a few people that still are pisssed because the European version Ford Fiesta has some stuff that N.A. did`nt get but for the most part, Ford got it right at a price point that worked! John K. from Hyundai is no Alan M, from Ford. As Donald Trump would say….Your Fired!
You can’t base the success or work of John K based off of the subcompact class car bro. Since John K Hyundai has been gorging on market share
John Kracifac being the head Honcho of Hyundai Motors America is ultimately responsible for everything and anything that Hyundai sells and markets South of the 39th parallel,Canada. That said, when the US or Korean “Bean Counters” were doing their tabulation, (he) should have pulled the E-Stop and made the necessary adjustments and corrections. Like the old saying goes, ” Heavy is the Head that Wears the Crown”. If there is a push back of the new 2012 Hyundai Accent due to its severe base model content and B-Segment cars sales goes to other Manufacturers (other then Kia which might be the plan anyway), if any head`s roll, John K. will be one of them. The top executives always get the Credit and when things go sour, always get the blame unless they can wiggle out it and point their finger at someone else in order to save their own ass. Thats Business 101!
it’s ugly. the old one was cute, this one looks like all the rest. Why do cars all have to look the same? how boring.
Angelina must be making reference to the old 2011 and earlier 3 door Hatchback which was a cute Justin Bieber “Tween” Car with a back seat big enough for a couple of small bags of groceries.
There’s nothing I can say about John Krafcik. He usually delivers on promises, so I’ll cross my fingers for future editions.
To “kick Fiesta’s Ass” as he said, the Accent MUST have more than Fiesta. Not a little but more- a Lot more. So well see.
Besides, Krafcik is an Accent and Genesis lover according to an interview about 3 years ago. Those are his 2 favorite cars in the fleet. He might have a trick or 2 up his sleeve for Accent.
Although the new 2011 Hyundai Sonata and 2011 Hyundai Elantra were equipped with DRL`s or Day Time Running Lights for USA version vehicles, it appears that to save a few more pennies on a cheaper wiring harness, it seems that the new 2012 USA version Accent will NOT have them, only vehicle destined for Canada where it is mandated by law will have this desired safety feature that (most) new vehicle now come with. Should have expected that after the black mirrors and door handles and 14“ rims, oh well, can`t say I`m surprised, just another disappointment!

No Power Windows standard?
Now how are the salesmen supposed to sell that when Sonic will probably have Power windows as standard too.
“The MINI Cooper doesnt have power windows standard.”
That would be how I’d push it.
If I was a Hyundai dealer, I wouldnt even purchase any 2012 Accents until they make the changes.
There wont be an Aveo for 2012, The Civic is all new, The Yaris will be all new, and the Versa is all new. Any car shopper who went to other dealers the same day wil realize this too.
This will make Hyundai Salesmen look cheesy and trying to hide something after the shopper was at the Nissan Dealer, the Honda Dealer, and the Chevy Dealer.
WTF, is with this comparing these old cars to the new one already?
If you’re trying to say that Hyundai buyers arent educated enough to realize these little points, then I’m offended.
BREAKING NEWS!!!! Just found out that beside new Ford Crown Victoria Police Interceptor vehicles that come standard with black painted exterior door handles and mirrors and of course the new 2012 Hyundai Accent GLS Base Sedan, it will also share this dubious distinction with another just released vehicle. The New 2012 Ford Focus Sedan base” S ” model also will feature this new style trend of black painted exterior door handles and mirrors as well.. Guess the new Accent is (in) fashion after all!
is this the new Hyundai i30?
It should be called i25 in EU Darwin. New i30 is still testing.
We think the GS hatch is great! Ordered one yesterday.
We are downsizing the family car from a 17-22mpg minivan to the accent hatch. No need anymore to carry a 6 person family around. We owned Honda, Rabbit and Scirocco hatches when our family was young. We moved to minivans as our family grew. Now that we are retired we are moving back to hatches.
No, the GS doesn’t match our other car (Infinity G35) on performance but on looks, cost, versatility, mpg, WARRANTY, it’s a great complement. We have driven the Fit and Fiesta, it’s two closest competitors, and we like the GS best. I don’t like the looks of the other low end hatches (Mazda, Nissan, Toyota, … ). The VW hatches are nice but just too expensive.
LGsales, you have a great car line. Thank you for the dealer comparison PDF. Did I mention the WARRANTY! Do you have any idea if the GS 1.6 GDI could be modified to run on cng?
Heywood Joblome,
The 5 door accent, is very different than a 4 door elantra or even sonata. I can put my mountainbike or dog in the hatch. A 5 door, 33+ average MPG car can only be found in very few other competitors. I agree the elantra sedan is an obvious choice over the accent sedan, but the 5 door is mandatory for me, hence the soon to be purchase of this 12 accent.
any news when the 2012 accent se’s will start being fielded in the states?
i am really hurting for a manual se!
Im in the market to buy my mom a new car, cash, I do want the accent hatch back really bad, but with no sun roof, optional leather seats and blinkers on the mirrors It’s just a deal breaker for me, poor poor me, does any one know when the hyundai accent like the one in Korea will sell in the US????? Then I would it.
Guess what? The car your looking for “WILL” be available this Fall, probably Oct. is the upcoming 2012 Kia Rio5 Hatchback. It will have (all) those missing options and a host of other upgrades. Same mechanics, same warranty, better looking and tons more available content. It`s a No Brainer!
HyundaiSmoke rolls a Spankin Benz AMG V12 and loves the sound of his own rants, (Oral & written)
I live in Miami Florida and just purchased the 5 door Accent in Black. I am a mommy to be who has always driven sporty, zippy cars. I didnt want to give that up and I didnt have to. I got a great deal, great service and an amazing warranty. It was worth every penny. I shopped around at the Mazdas and the Nissans and the Mazda 2 and the Nissan Versa are like clown cars compared to my baby!!! Thank you Rick Case Hyundai!!!
I agree wholeheartedly with Maribel M from Miami…my son’s new Boston Red Hyundai Accent SE is one awesome car, and despite it’s tight, sporty feel and handling, it turned 43.8 MPG on a 1500 mile trip. The Nissan Versa feels like a ’76 Ford Maverick compared to the fit and finish and overall driveability of the new Accent.
